How to read a Mazda 929 VIN — every digit explained
Every Mazda 929 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Mazda and the country it was built in (real Mazda codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this 929.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- JapanJC1 · JC2 · JM1 · JM2 · JM3
- Mexico3MD · 3MV · 3MY · 3MZ
- USA7MM · 7MU
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your 929, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

Seat Belts:front:buckle Assembly
What's wrong. The front safety belt buckle release buttons can break. These red plastic release buttons are marked "press." if a button breaks, pieces can fall into the buckle assembly causing the buckle to operate improperly.
Risk. The safety belts would not provide adequate protection to an occupant in a vehicle crash.
Fix. Owners should promptly check the condition and operation of both front safety belt buckles and carefully inspect the red release button for any breaks or cracks. They should ensure that both buckles are operating properly by inserting each latch plate into its buckle, tugging on the belt to make sure the latch is securely locked, and then pressing the release button. The latch plate should pop out of the buckle when the button is pressed. If either release button shows a sign of breaking or cracking or if either buckle fails to operate properly, owners should promptly contact their authorized dealer to schedule an appointment to have the buckle replaced or repaired, free of charge. The manufacturer is developing a remedy designed to prevent failure of the buttons that are not currently broken.

Passenger's door handle will not open the doors at all. At this time there is a recall on the front doors, but not on passenger's door. Dealership is aware of the problem.*ak
The outside door handles, both front and rear, keep breaking, thereby making the doors inoperative from the outside. Both rear handles have been replaced twice and both front handles were replaced due to a recall, the left front has since broken. The material used in these handles is of such poor quality that the metal actually breaks. I am always driving around with at least one (once with two) inoperative door due to a broken handle. *ak
When the door handle failed on the drivers side, the drivers window when rolled down would pop open the door, then the window itself would no longer roll up. They agreed to fix the door handle because it was under recall. Yet the window, which was directly related to and caused by this incident is going to cost us 225dollars to get repaired. It went down and wouldn't come back up after the door handle failed and wouldn't open from outside . Now the dealership says the regulator is stripped on the window, which is because the door handle failed and in turn the window once rolled down would never come back up. The dealership admits this problem is related fully to the recall, but will only fix the door handle itself and is charging us for the other part, which is totally due to the defect and was not in our control. (93v-174) denied additional repair of window. *mjs
Rear door handle is broke and the consumer can't get into rear door from the outside. *ak
Consumer can't use the door handles from the outside on the passenger's front door and driver's side door due to the handles being broken. *ak

1994 mazda 929 has been experiencing unintended acceleration problems. Have not gotten it fixed yet so i don't know what it will cost.
My spouse was on her way to work when the car engine was rough idling and stalled. No engine light or instrument warning indicator came on. The car was towed to a local mazda service dealer the same day. We contacted the service dept on 01/07/99 and learned that the car had a failure, an electrical short in one of the six ignition wires. We also learned that unburned fuel due to this ignition wire failure pass through to the catalyst converters and damaged the left catalytic converter (ruptured). The estimate given to us by the mazda dealer for replacement parts + labor was $1300 for replacing 3 converters. Mazda indicated the emission system (including the converters) was not covered by either our extended warranty or by mazda. All failed parts involved were original mazda for mazda 929. I and my spouse extremely concern of driving this vehicle based on this incident. There should be a recall for mazda 929's to check the ignition wires and exhaust systems at their expense at the next scheduled maintenance interval. *ak

On the above mentioned dates i encountered mechinical problems which consisted of my cooling system. I replaced the water pump, thermost, radiator, and timing belt. Six months later my heater and defogger was working improperly. At the time i had no idea it was related to the first problem i encountered and i couldn't afford to take it in at the time. So i only drove the car when the temperature was at least 45 degrees or higher. After i finally paid off my car i was finacially able to take it in and had the heater problem checked out. I was told by covington pike mazda mr. Sommers , that they were informed by mazda manufacturer in 1995 that these cars had a defect in the engine block that resticted the flow of the cooliant, which affected the heater/defrost/cooling system, and the only remedy was to buy a new motor. I contacted mazda corp. And got no assistance. I ended up buying a new motor from mazda on feb-23-99 and it was installed and returned onmar-05-99. My total out of pocket cost was $4925.60 which mazda refused to reimburse me for . I feel that because mazda knew of this problem back in 1995 when they informed the dealers with this technical infrmation. That any customer who encounterd these problems mazda would repair at no cost to the customer. *ak

Driving on interstate and needed to slow for construction zone. Cruise would not disengage. Turned switch off. Hit brake. Even put car into neutral for a short time but speed control would not disengage. Had to ride brakes about 5 miles in construction zone between tractor trailers before having chance to get off and stop the car. The cruise control disengaged after the engine was turned off for 15 minutes. I paid $420 to replace pads and two rotors after the incident. This is quite dangerous. Speedometer failed.
When applying brakes to stop vehicle surged forward. Immediately placed shift in neutral with foot on the brake pedal, engine with no load raced to 5000 rpm and was climbing higher until the ignition was turned to off. Restarted the engine and it immediately raced to 5000 rpm. This sequence occurred 5 times before the engine finally reset to a normal rpm start and could be driven home. Auto has experenced this problem for 2 years but can not be duplicated in the shop. The rugs were removed and the cruise control disconnected, and the computer changed but the problem was never corrected by 3 separate shops who could not duplicate the problem when the vehicle was in their possesion. Owner feels the vehicle is too dangerous to drive although it is in perfect condition otherwise. *ak
