I RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED 2002 GALANT. 2 DAYS AFTER PURCHASE THE BRAKES STARTED SQUEALING. BRAKE PADS WERE REPLACED AND 3 WEEKS LATER THEY STARTED SQUEALING AGAIN. *NM

I CONTINUE TO BATTLE PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS. THE CAR IS TYPICALLY USED WITH ONE OCCUPANT AND NO OR VERY LITTLE (20LBS OR LESS) CARGO. IN THE APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MILES I HAVE OWNED THE CAR, THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN REPAIRED 3 TIMES AND HAS NOW FAILED THE 4TH TIME. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN REPAIRED MORE TIMES IF I COULD AFFORD IT. MORE THAN 10,000 OF THESE 20,000 MILES HAVE BEEN DRIVEN WITH THE BRAKES SQUEALING OR CHATTERING. EVENTUALLY THE BRAKING POWER FADES AND THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES TOO MUCH TO HOLD ONTO. WHILE THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY, THE DEALER REFUSED TO DO ANY REPAIR COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. THE DEALER WOULD NOT INSPECT OR REPAIR THE CALIPERS IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT THE TYPE OF SQUEALING INDICATED POOR CONTACT OF THE PADS WITH THE ROTORS DUE TO STICKING CALIPERS AND THE FACT THAT HEAT WARPAGE OF THE ROTORS INDICATES STICKING CALIPERS. CALIPERS WERE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. INSTEAD, THE DEALER CLAIMED THAT I NEEDED TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR REAR BRAKE ADJUSTMENT AT THE SAME INTERVAL AS AN OIL CHANGE; HOWEVER, RESEARCH TELLS ME THAT THIS CAR HAS AUTO ADJUSTING REAR BRAKES! THIS TIME I TOOK IT ON MYSELF TO SERVICE THE FRONT BRAKES AS I COULDN'T AFFORD TO HAVE THEM SERVICED, MY WIFE AND I WERE AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE THE SHAKING DURING BRAKING WAS SO BAD, AND SEARS TOLD US THAT ROTORS HAD WORN TOO THIN TO RESURFACE. AT THE TIME I DID THIS SERVICE, I FOUND THE SLIDE PINS OF THE CALIPERS TO BE BADLY WORN. THIS TYPE OF FAILURE WILL CAUSE CALIPERS TO STICK, PREMATURELY WEAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS, OVERHEAT ROTORS AND PADS CAUSING WARPAGE OF THE ROTORS AND REDUCED BRAKING POWER, AND REDUCE BRAKING POWER BY CAUSING THE CALIPER TO CATCH RATHER THAN SLIDE ON THE SLIDE PIN AND THEREBY PREVENT PROPER PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PADS. THIS IS A FAILURE OF THE CALIPER, WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN EASY TO DETECT AND COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, WHICH SPECIFICALLY COVERS CALIPERS. *JB

RECURRING AND SEVERE FRONT BRAKE CHATTER. DESPITE REPEATED REPAIR, THE FRONT BRAKES CHATTER ON BRAKING SO MUCH THAT THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES. THE BRAKING STRENGTH IS SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED AND BRAKING DISTANCE SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASED. THE DEALER CLAIMS THIS IS DUE TO THE REAR BRAKES BEING OUT OF ADJUSTMENT CAUSING THE FRONT BRAKES TO WORK "TOO HARD" RESULTING IN WARPED ROTORS. THEY WILL NOT COVER THESE REPAIRS UNDER WARRANTY. MITSUBISHI GALLANT: I BOUGHT THIS CAR PRE-OWNED, WITH 40K MILES. I HAVE ALREADY SERVICE MY BRAKES ABOUT 4 TIMES. I USED HAVE A DEALER WARRANTY, BUT IT WAS USELESS. A MECHANIC THAT I TRUST TOLD ME THAT MY ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED. HOWEVER, HE DIDN'T ADVICE ME TO REPLACE THEM BECAUSE IT WAS AN EXPENSIVE JOB AND THERE WAS NOT WARRANTY THAT THE CAR WILL NOT CONTINUE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM DUE TO FACTORY DEFECTS. HE TOLD ME TO LOOK ON THIS PAGE FOR MANY ISSUES ON THIS CAR. I WILL GET RID OF THIS CAR AS SOON AS I CAN. I WILL NEVER BUY THIS BRAND OF CAR AGAIN, I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED. *NM

I PURCHASED MY 2002 MITSUBISHI GALANT ON FEBRUARY 2002. I HAVE HAD BRAKE PROBLEMS FROM THE 1ST WEEK I PURCHASED IT. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES AND ALSO CALLED NUMEROUS TIMES THAT YEAR. EVERY YEAR FROM THEN, I HAVE HAD BRAKE PADS PUT ON MAYBE 3 TIMES PER YEAR. EVERY OTHER MONTH, IT SEEMS AS THOUGH SOMETHING IS GOING WRONG WITH MY BRAKES. JUST LAST YEAR, I HAD BRAKE PADS PUT ON AND ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE ROTORS. JUST TODAY, I HEARD MY BRAKES SCRUBBING AND WHISTLING WHEN I'M DRIVING. SOMETHING IS DEFINETLY WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE.

AFTER RETURNING TO THE VEHICLE AN HOUR LATER THERE WAS SMOKE BEING EMITTED FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT DOOR. THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED AND THE WIRES WERE CUT TO PREVENT FURTHER THERMAL EVENTS. The contact owns a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant. The contact stated that while his son was being chased by another motorist at 40 MPH, he lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to brake. The vehicle veered off the road and initially hit a garbage can that ricocheted and broke another vehicle's taillight. The vehicle continued to move forward before it hit both an electrical box and a tree which stopped the vehicle's momentum. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. His son was treated at the scene for the soreness to his chest and back and for other minor cuts and bruises. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it remained in their possession. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 131,000.

I BOUGHT THE CAR, AN 02 MITSUBISHI GALANT FROM A PRIVATE OWNER WHO POINTED OUT TO ME THE KNOCKING SOUND IN THE DASH WHEN SWITCHING FROM COLD TO HOT AIR. A FRIEND OF MINE HAS THE SAME CAR AND THE SAME PROBLEM. YESTERDAY MINE STOPPED KNOCKING AND BLOWING ANY HOT AIR AT ALL. HE TOWED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED EIGHT MONTHS LATER. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AGAIN. THIS TIME THE REPAIRS ONLY LASTED TWO MONTHS BEFORE FAILING AGAIN. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY BEING TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER. THE INTAKE MANIFOLD IS PRONE TO CRACKING WHERE IT IS CONNECTED TO THE THROTTLE BODY. THROUGH RESEARCH, THE CONTACT FOUND THIS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS. THE CONTACT BELIEVES THAT A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED DUE TO THE MANUFACTURER DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 126,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 147,000. CRANSKHAFT BOLT SHEARED OFF WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS CAUSING LOSS OF POWER STEERING ON ICY ROADS. THE INCIDENT ALSO CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE CRANKSHAFT SENSOR, HARMONIC BALANCER, AND TIMING BELT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT A LOCAL AUTOMOBILE REPAIR SHOP AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE SHEARED BOLT WAS CLEARLY A DEFECTIVE PART. I SAW THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM ON MITSUBISHI FORUM WEBSITE. IF THIS IS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. I HAVE A 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND I NEED HEAT IN THE WINTER. I TOOK MY CAR TO WAL-MART FOR OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION, THEY DID THE OIL CHANGE AND REFUSED TO DO THE TIRE ROTATION. THEY RECOMMENDED THAT BOTH FRONT TIES BE REPLACED. THEY MADE ME SIGN A PAPER THAT THEY INFORMED ME OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE TIRES. THE TECHNICIANS SAID HE WON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS CAR ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS ON BOARD. I DO CARE OF MY CAR AND KEEP UP WITH THE TIRE ROTATION AND GENERAL MAINTENANCE. I TOOK THE TO DISCOUNT TIRES AND THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE TIRES BECAUSE OF CRACKS IN THE TIRES. MICHELIN IS REFUSING TO HONOR THE WARRANTY 6 YEARS / 90,000 MILES. THERE IS NO WAY THESE TIRES CAN GO 90,000 MILES, THERE ARE CRACKS IN THE TIRES. I HAVE A 2002 GALANT, AND AT 30,000MILS, I HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS, AND THE BRAKE PADS. I WAS TOLD IT'S NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY TERMS. THERE'S SEVERE VIBRATIONS, AND ROTATIONAL NOISE NOTICED WHEN DRIVING AT 60MPH AND ABOVE, AND I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER, THEY TOLD ME THEY REPACKED MY BEARINGS, BUT THE NOISE AND VIBRATIONS STILL CONTINUE TO SURFACE. SEVERE VIBRATIONS ARE FELT ON THE STEERING WHEEL BEGINNING OVER THE SPEED OF 60 MPH AND GRADUALLY INCREASING OVER 70 MPH WHICH MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF MOTOR VEHICLE HAZARD TO THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS ESPECAIALLY DRIVER. THE VIBRATIONS ARE MAXIMUM AT A STEADY SPEED OF 65 TO 70 MPH ON A NEWLY CONSTRUCTED HIGHWAY PREFERABLY WITH SMOOTH SURFACE. STEERING VIBRATIONS DECREASES WHEN DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS WITH ROUGH SURFACES AND WHEN ACCELERATING THE CAR, THAT IS WHEN STEPPING OVER THE GAS PEDAL. HOWEVER, OVER A SMOOTH SURFACE HIGHWAY, STEERING VIBRATIONS ARE SEVERE WHEN ACCELERATING OVER 65-75 MPH AND DECELARATING UPTO 65-75 MPH AND MAINTAIN A STEADY SPEED AT 70MPH WITH SLIGHT VARIATIONS. I'VE HAD THIS 2002 MITSUBISHI GALANT FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS AND HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE LIGHTS. THEY DON'T SHINE BRIGHT ENOUGH TO CLEARLY SEE THE ROAD AHEAD. IT IS A CONSTANT PROBLEM. I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A PROBLEM WITH MY CAR, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM.

WHILE THE 2002 GALANT WAS IN PARK AND ENGINE OFF , VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN STEEP DRIVEWAY I WAS FASTENING BABY INTO CARSEAT ON REAR PASSENGER SIDE OTHER CHILD BUMPED GEAR SHIFT INTO REVERSE AND CAR ENGAGED . I WAS DRAGGED WITH VEHICLE DOWN DRIVEWAY ACROSS STREET INTO A YARD AND INTO A TREE WHERE VEHICLE CAME TO REST AFTER CRASHING INTO TREE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 MITSUBISHI GALANT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE POWER WINDOW FAILED INTERMITTENTLY. IN ADDITION, THE HORN WOULD ENGAGE SPORADICALLY AND WOULD NOT STOP. TWO WEEKS AGO OUR CARS? PASSENGER FRONT PANEL STARTED TO SMOKE WITHIN A FEW MINUTES THE ENGINE WAS STARTED. AT THE TIME IT HAPPENED WE DID NOT KNOW WHERE THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM. WHEN I WENT TO GET CLOSER TO THE SMOKE IT WAS THE PANEL WHERE THE WINDOW AND DOOR BUTTONS ARE. THE SECURITY GUARD IN OUR BUILDING HAD A FLASHLIGHT AND SAW THE TOP PART OF THE PANEL WAS MELTING, HE WAS ABLE TO LIFT THE MELTING PLASTIC AND INSIDE THE DOOR THE SMOKE AND FLAMES WERE. THE FIRE EXTINGUISHED AND WE PULLED THE FUSE. NOW WE HAVE NO POWER WINDOWS ON ALL SO WE ARE DRIVING WITHOUT THE ABILITY OF OPENING THE WINDOWS. THANK GOD WE WERE NOT ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN IT STARTED. I CALLED MITSUBISHI AND THEY TOLD ME THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM YET ON YOUR SITE THERE WERE TWO OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. SINCE IT?S PASSED THE WARRANTY TIME THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGES. I DO UNDERSTAND THE INSURANCE COMPANY WILL PAY FOR IT BUT SINCE I HAVE A DEDUCTIBLE OF $500 I MUST PAY FOR IT. MITSUBISHI CUSTOMER SERVICE SAID IF THE INSURANCE COMPANY FINDS THE PIECE TO BE A DEFECT, THEY WOULD NEED TO PUT IN A CLAIM FOR IT. I DON?T UNDERSTAND WHY A CAR OF ONLY 5 YEARS OLD HAD THIS PROBLEM. ON LEAVING WORK, I FILLED UP THE GAS TANK. I STARTED TO DRIVE HOME AND MY GAS GAUGE SHOWED NEAR EMPTY AFTER 15 MILES. I STOPPED ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND THE POLICE OFFICER SAID TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY SINCE I HAD A GASOLINE LEAK. I THOUGH THAT IT WAS IN MY GAS TANK SO I FILLED UP TO DRIVE HOME. IT DID NOT SEAM TO LEAK WHEN THE ENGINE WAS NOT RUNNING. THE NEXT DAY I DROVE IT TO THE MITSUBISHI DEALER AND A FIRE STARTED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I DID NOT WANT TO RAISE THE HOOD BECAUSE THE OXOGEN WOULD CAUSE A FIRE TO ENVOLVE THE ENTIRE CAR. I KEEP THE HOOD DOWN FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES UNTIL THERE WAS NO SMOLDERING. I THEN CALLED A TOW TRUCK TO TAKE THE CAR TO MY DEALER. MY 2002 MITSUBISHI GALANT V6 CTZ WAS CHECKED OUT BY THE DELOR AN HE FOUND THAT THE PLASTIC PROTECTOR THAT COVERS THE GAS HOSE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS CHEWED UP, HE SAID, BY A SQUARREL CAUSING THE GASOLINE TO FLOW ONTO THE TOP OF THE HOT ENGINE. HE REPLACED PART OF THE PLASTIC PROTECTOR. THIS PROBLEM CAN BE REPEATED SINCE THIS SEASON HAS COLD WEATHER AND ANIMALS HIDE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT FOR HEAT. LUCKALY THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A MAJOR CAR FIRE WAS AVERTED.

I HAVE A 2002 MITSUBISHI GALANT, THE KNOB THAT CONTROLS THE AIR TEMPERATURE IN THE CAR USED TO MAKE A CLICKING NOISE WHEN BEING TURNED FROM COLD TO HOT & VICE VERSA, IT STOPPED MAKING THAT NOISE AND NOW I NO LONGER HAVE HEAT. I HAVE SEARCHED THE INTERNET HIGH & LOW AND HAVE FOUND LOTS OF COMPLAINTS THAT THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM FOR THESE CARS AND THAT IT IS THE HEATER CONTROL MOTOR. I PURCHASED MY 2002 GALANT IN AUGUST 05. WHEN I FIRST TURNED THE DIAL TO HEAT, IT MADE A "CLICKING" SOUND AND THEN STARTED BLOWING WARM AIR. I NOTICED THAT EVERY TIME I TURNED THE HEATING/COOLING DIAL IT MADE THE "CLICKING" SOUND. IN APRIL 2006, THE "CLICKING" SOUND QUIT AND SO DID THE HEAT. I TOOK THE CAR TO A MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE HEATER CORE. I PURCHASED A HEATER CORE FROM THE NEAREST MITSUBISHI DEALER APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES AWAY ONLY FOR THE CLICKING SOUND TO COME BACK ONCE AND TO FIND OUT THE HEATER CORE IS NOT THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER WILL NOT TAKE THE $200. PART BACK SAYING MITSUBISHI WILL NOT ACCEPT IT. I HAVE TALKED TO SEVERAL OTHERS THAT OWN 2002 GALANTS WHO HAVE THE SAME "CLICKING" SOUND. CORPORATE MITSUBISHI WAS NOT ANY HELP IN THIS SITUATION. *JB

MY MITSUBISHI G IS A 2002. I BOUGHT IT 2/2004 FROM CARMAX! NOT EVEN 3 MONTHS INTO DRIVING MY CAR, I'VE HAD BRAKE PROBLEMS WHICH BEGAN SQUEAKING, THEN GRINDING. CARMAX CHANGED THE PADS AND I STILL HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AT LEAST 3 MONTHS LATER! I BOUGHT 4 NEW TIRES FROM SEARS! THIS IS NOT MY 1ST CAR AND I KNOW BRAKES SHOULD NOT BE CHANGED THAT OFTEN. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES SINCE I BOUGHT MY CAR. THEY ARE GOOD FOR SAYING THE COMPLAINTS ARE NOT LISTED ON THE WARRANTY. OH AND EVERYTIME IT RAINS, MY ENTIRE LEFT SIDE IS DRENCHED ONLY ON THE FLOOR! THE DEALER I PURCHASED SAYS THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. NOW MY INSIDE FLOORS ARE GETTING WORSE. DT: THE CONTACT STATED CAR HAS BEEN STALLING FOR SEVERAL YEARS. WHEN SHE TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, THEY TOLD HER THE PROBLEM EMERGED BECAUSE OF LOW MAINTENANCE ON THE CAR. SHE TOOL VEHICLE FOR SERVICE, BUT NOT TO THE DEALER BECAUSE IT WAS TOO EXPENSIVE. SINCE 3-2003 WATER LEAKED INTO THE CAR. WATER BUILD UP INSIDE OF THE CAR FROM THE AIR CONDITIONER. ALSO, HAD ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. WHEN THE WATER ACCUMULATED IN THE CAR IT WILL LOCK ON ITS OWN. THE AIR CONDITIONER WILL NOT COME ON SOMETIMES. THERE WAS MOLD IN THE CAR BECAUSE OF THE WATER. WE BROUGHT OUR CAR IN 4/2002. HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH BRAKES. WE ARE CURRENTLY ON OUR THIRD SET OF PADS AND OUR SECOND SET OF ROTORS. SQUEEKING HAS BEEN A PROBLEM ALONG WITH GRINDING AND FOR SOME REASON WHEN THE BRAKES ARE DEPRESSED THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES. WE HAD A MECHANIC LOOK AT THE BRAKES DURING THE LAST PAD CHANGE AND HE NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A TEAR IN THE CALLIPER SYSTEM. AIRCONDITIONING LEAKS FROM BENEATH GLOVE COMPARTMENT. DRAINED TWICE BUT COMPANY WILL NOT REPAIR IF THERE IS THE PRESENCE OF ANY OUTSIDE MATERIAL SUCH AS A LEAF, A PIECE OF DEBRIS THAT THEY CLAIM IS IN THE SYSTEM. DEALER REPAIR STATED THAT THERE IS SOMETHING IN THE BODY THAT IS ALLOWING DEBRIS TO GET IN AND WHEN CONSUMER INDICATED THAT WAS A CAR DEFECT DEALER SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THEREFORE, DEFECT IN BODY CAUSED PROBLEM WITH COOLING SYSTEM AND NEITHER IS COVERED BY WARRANTY. CONSUMER IS ACTIVELY SEEKING REMEDY FOR THIS PROBLEM. CAR HANDLES LIKE GARBAGE. TIRES HAVE BEEN REPLACED, BRAKES, ALIGNMENT DONE TWICE AND THE CAR PULLED TO THE RIGHT STILL. AFTER BRAKES WERE DONE CAR ACTUALLY PULLED MORE TO LEFT. THE CAR STINKS. STEERING SAID TO HAVE NO PROBLEM YET SEE ABOVE. THE CAR STINKS.
