How to read a Mitsubishi Galant VIN — every digit explained
Every Mitsubishi Galant carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Galant.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Galant VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Seat Belts:front:buckle Assembly
What's wrong. The front safety belt buckle release buttons can break. These red plastic release buttons are marked "press." if a button breaks, pieces can fall into the buckle assembly causing the buckle to operate improperly.
Risk. The safety belts would not provide adequate protection to an occupant in a vehicle crash.
Fix. Owners should promptly check the condition and operation of both front safety belt buckles and carefully inspect the red release button for any breaks or cracks. They should ensure that both buckles are operating properly by inserting each latch plate into its buckle, tugging on the belt to make sure the latch is securely locked, and then pressing the release button. The latch plate should pop out of the buckle when the button is pressed. If either release button shows a sign of breaking or cracking or if either buckle fails to operate properly, owners should promptly contact their authorized dealer to schedule an appointment to have the buckle replaced or repaired, free of charge. The manufacturer is developing a remedy designed to prevent failure of the buttons that are not currently broken.

Driving at 30 miles an hour on city street. Prepared to stop at stop light. The brakes did not respond, and the vehicle accelerated. The vehicle was totaled. Driver and passeger were taken to the hospital and released with cuts and bumps.
On july 1, 2003, we purchased a used 2000 mistibushi galant from colonial mitibushi in danbury, conn. On july 2, we reported to them the brakes did not feel right. It was slipping. They rub it off and told us before we purchase the car, the car went through a great inspection and nothing was wrong. July 4, my husband was on his way to work when he realized that the brakes would not stop the car on the highway. He finally coasted until he was able to exit the highway and used the shift panel to stop the car. While this was going on there was a skaping noise coming from the front passenger side of the car. The following day, we reported the incident to colonial mist. (dave) and this repaired the brakes, kept the car for about 4 days and returned it back to us saying it was perfect. On july 27, i called the service facility for colonial and reported again the brakes were slipping and i was unable to stop at certain time. The lady told me the closet appointment would be friday, july 8 i guess because i wasn't one of there favorite customer. I said to her i am talking about the brakes not the windshield or door, but the safety of my children and i. She said no manager was available and that the closest day available. On friday evening, august 1- i had no choice but to use the car to drive my son to work about 6 miles. All along, i noticed when i press the brakes it would slid a little bit when it was time to come to stop. But, at this particular point i press the brakes and it kept slidding, and slidding anfd won't stop until i hit the car in front of me. Which was standing still. We reported the problem to our insurance company, and also to colonial mistibushi who is willing to take the car back now, but without refund but exchange. What other recourse can we persude in reference to this issue considering it's a used car?*ak

While the 2002 galant was in park and engine off , vehicle was parked in steep driveway i was fastening baby into carseat on rear passenger side other child bumped gear shift into reverse and car engaged . I was dragged with vehicle down driveway across street into a yard and into a tree where vehicle came to rest after crashing into tree. The galants shift lock does not work the brake should have to be depressed to shift and not at all if engine is off. This needs to be investigated as this could well have been fatal. Luckily i received only a broken foot and cuts. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 mitsubishi galant. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle the transmission had malfunctioned and the vehicle would not operate in the drive and reverse position. In addition, there was a leakage and smoke was also present coming from under the vehicle. The contact indicated that the failure would only occur when engine temperature was heated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. The contact indicated that the transmission had previously experienced the same failure and was replaced in 2013. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 220,000.
2001 galant es developed problems with the transmission.*mr the automatic transmission began slipping in and out of gear, which resulted in the consumer having the vehicle towed. The consumer had to take the vehicle back to dealer on several occasions because of the recurring transmission problem. It was determined the transmission needed to be replaced under the manufacturers warranty. The consumer stated the replacement transmission is now slipping, however the dealer could not duplicate the problem. The engine light illuminated and once again it was determined to be the transmission, even though the dealer claimed they could not duplicate the problem. The transmission was replaced for the second time. On june 2, 2005 the transmission began slipping in and out of gear again and the consumer noticed white smoke emitting from the tail pipe, moments later the vehicle was on fire. After inspecting the vehicle, it was determined there was a transmission fluid leak from a line which led from the transmission to the lower part of the radiator and was used as a cooler line. *jb
While driving 70 mph transmission failed without warning. As a result, the vehicle caught on fire. The vehicle was considered a total loss.*ak

Me and my wife were driving about 45 miles an hour when the rear end of my car started sliding i try to correct the fish tale but the driver rear tire and rim folded under the car which cause the car to flip several times no airbags deployed the car was so crushed i had to dig down into the ditch to free myself from the car upon taking a closer look i realized the sway bar had pulled apart from both sides of the rear of the car also the main support of the rear suspension had broken in too therefore causing the car to flip we could have easily died in this crash and 2 year old and our 6 month old would have no parents. *nlm

Dt: the contact states that she purchased the car in july of 2004. When she bought the car she was having several problems with the vehicle, and the dealer really didn't' want' to help her with any of her problems. She had an accident, she was not sure what happened with the vehicle, but she said check engine light kept coming on, and she had a tire and oil change. She lost all control of vehicle. She tried hitting the brakes and she didn't have any brakes. Finally the car landed. The dealer just told her that she hit something, but she didn't hit anything. About a month before the accident she took the vehicle in for a tire pressure inspection. The vehicle, while she was driving before the accident, the car dropped to the passenger side. She was going under 60 mph. *ak
Recall received on ball joint, ball joint boot. Took car to dealership and the service department checked it and said it was ok on 7/28/00. On 9/4/00 the ball joint broke, causing the left front wheel to turn sideways and causing a crash. *ak
While driving at 50 mph the ball joint came out of joint, causing the axle to break. A recall was received on the ball joints and the vehicle was taken in for inspection. While driving at 10 mph the rubber ball joint failed. Also, consumer applied brakes, and vehicle spun out of control and did a 360 degree turn. Vehicle hit another vehicle on the front passenger's side. *ak
The ball joint to driver's side broke while i was driving down road at 50mph, the car veered to left and skidded about 500 feet before i could get vehicle to stop. When i did the driver tire was perpendicular to the car and the base of motor was resting on the ground. After mitsibushi repaired the ball joint and half shaft that also broke. I transported it to ocala florida from odessa texas on a car carrier since that point i have learned all 4 motor mounts were broken. I contacted mitsibushi because it is my understanding that for all 4 to break substantial trauma would have had to occur, the car has not other trauma except the wreck in odessa when the ball joint snapped. Mitsibushi told me to take it to a local dealer here, i did and now they are declining to fix motor mounts that i contend were broken during that wreck. I have a complete file of events and receipts and names i would like to send via mail to your association if possible please provide me with a mailing address so i can fully explain the situation and provide the proof i have relating to the entire situation. I have been so financially and emotionally strained on this incident that i have been having problems with this car since 8 days after i purchased it used, but purchased to have reliable transportation and yet i have had more uncertainty with this car than anything all related t a ball joint recall. Thanks sincerely [xxx]. *ak parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My car had an overheating problem last december 12/2007. Therefore i took it to a mechanic to get it fixed. They said they replaced the radiator, fan control, and upper and lower radiator hoses- (i have the receipt for that). A week later when i was driving, the car started to catch fire. The fire was coming from the front. The whole car up to the back seats were all damaged because of the fire, only the luggage was ok. So my insurance company conducted an investigation to see the cause of the fire and their report was that it was the mechanics fault. (i have the investigation report with me). However, the mechanic shop wanted to conduct their own investigation as well. So their conclusion was that this mitubishi galant 2001 model license plate numbewas recalled for this particular problem. But i never got any letter from mitsubishi up till today about this. So please let me know if this car was recalled for this particular problem or whether this was the mechanics fault. If you need any additional information please call me or email me. My car would not start at all. After it being towed to a garage, they diagnosed the problem to be the electrical wiring harness. It was chafing against the engine and causing a short. When they replaced all the fuses the car sparked and smelled of smoke with small flames by the fuse box. The mechanic ended having to replace the harness. But said that this maybe a universal problem as my car is only a 2005 mitsubishi galant. Of course it has 72,000 miles so it is out of warranty. *tr

I own a green 99 mitsubishi galant and the clear coat is coming off causing my car to look like it has alligator skin it started on the roof and has now spread to the trunk and hood. I called mitsubishi to see if they had any complains about the paint and i was told no.
