How to read a Mitsubishi Diamante VIN — every digit explained
Every Mitsubishi Diamante carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Mitsubishi and the country it was built in.
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Diamante.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Diamante VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Electrical System:wiring:front Underhood
What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles, the main under hood electrical wiring harness may have insufficient clearance between the engine control harness and the exhaust heat shield. As a result, the harness could come in contact with the heat shield, which could result in melting of the harness insulation.
Risk. The melting of the harness insulation could result in grounding of the crank angle sensor wiring, causing the engine to run erratically or stop suddenly, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the harness for damage and, if none is evident, will tie the harness back to prevent the harness from ever coming into contact with the heat shield. Any harness that shows evidence of damage will be repaired as necessary and then tied back to prevent future damage. Owner notification began may 13, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037.

Abnormal smell coming from vents, made me, and my two sons feel nauseous, created a headache for me. I had to open windows in order to drive car due to fumes. Brought car to dealer, and heater core was identified as problem and needed to be replaced. Dealer said this is a very common problem with this year and model. I asked if there was a manufacturer recall and he said no, they only had to do a recall if it was a safety problem. This cost $802.37 to repair. This is most definitely a safety issue. Not only health, but can cause an accident due to fogging of windows, etc. I am sure mitsubishi knows of this problem. Seems as though a class action suit should be filed against them for this issue. My car only has 47k miles, i purchased new and it has had all regular maintenance required. This is obviously a manufacturers defect. I will never purchase another mitsubishi, just because they do not take responsibility. *nm
The first time my 5 year old son drove in this car, he vomitted. Everytime he rides in it he becomes nauseous. The car's windshield fogs up and a sickly sweet smell comes out of the vents. The windshield is covered in a permanent haze. We noticed these symptoms but had not given it a second thought since the car was new and had no reason to suspect major problems. The car was recently in the shop for 1 week, when we picked it up we really noticed the sweet smell and alerted the shop. After inspection the shop diagnozed it as a heater core problem, a leak that is vaporizing and condensating on the windshields. The anti-freeze fumes are noxious, and after some research we have found that mitsubishi has been aware of the problem and has even issued 2 tsb about the problem. Mitsubishi fails to correct the problem by fixing the car. Because of the noxious nature of the fumes, the number of complaints on record, mitsubishi should be forced to recall these cars and to fix the problem. If nhtsa refuses to help all of us who have been screwed by another large corporation, why am i paying my taxes, so that you can protect corporate interests like all other federal agencies? The incident is everyday. *jb
For over 2 years now i have had problems with an odor in my 2000 diamanti and the defogger never seemed to work on the windows. A couple of weeks ago i saw something leak onto the passenger side rug but didn't' t guess that this could have something to do with the heater core. Upon taking it to my dealer i was told this was hole in the heater core that had to be fixed immediately because it was dangerous and hazardous to my health to breath the fumes that were coming out of the core. The cost would be approximately $1200. I noticed i often had headaches when i drove long distances but was very concerned when my grandchild became very car sick (which had never happened before) upon riding in my car. I still didn't associate the heater with our problems. I think this is very dangerous and something should be recalled on these. I resent that after only 40,000 miles i must spend $1200 on something that is obviously a mistake on mitsubishi's part since it is not a wear factor. *tr
For several weeks it was becoming increasingly difficult for me to clear the windshield on my car and i attributed it to hot, humid weather. Coming back on the freeway one evening it suddenly became much worse and my husband and i tried many different combinations of cool/warm/fresh air to be able to see out of the window, but it never fully cleared. It was dangerous to drive under those conditions, but we made it home. There was a whitish film beginning to form on the window, visible in daylight. What was in the fumes that formed the film i am afraid to imagine. Several days later as i was driving my son to school we both noticed a white, cloudy smoke coming from the vents directly in front of us. We kept the windows down to avoid breathing in the fumes. The next day i took my car to the dealership and was told the gaskets adjacent to the heater core had failed. It cost $5.10 for the replacement part, but the repair cost total $560.00 because they had to remove the entire dash to replace the o-rings. My car was in the shop for a full day. I'm also concerned because i've since learned that the anti-freeze leaking from the "worn-out" rings dripped down onto my car's computer. What potential damage could have occurred to the computer, is it ok now, and could it have caused a major accident if the computer failed.*ak
The heater core is an extremely dangerous problem. The windows in the car fog up so bad i couldnt drive the car...had to pull over and wipe the windows down. But the thing is...i didnt know what the problems was...until i realized the windows werent just being fogged by the cold, ect it was a toxic mist from a heater core problem...i pulled over 2 times because i got sick...i noticed a mist coming out of the vents....so all in all i called mitsubishi and they refuse to do anything about this.this heater core problem can lead to accidents, sickness, and othe expensive problems in the car! The fumes are extremely toxic!!! There are 1000's of complaints and blogs about this problem...i'm sure there are 100,000+ complaints abpout this problem. And mitsubishi refuses to help or do anything about this. I told them, is this gonna take a fatal accident for them to do something?" they replied, "im not answering that!" i told them that they should have recalled this problem. They replied, "sorry but your warranty is up we can't do nothing about it." this heater core problems leads to faulty transmission problems, electrical problems, hazerdous problems, sickness, interior of the car can be ruined because anitfreeze leaks through the dash board...where mitsubishi placed the heater core. Made no sense to place a heater core above the electrical component of the transmission. They really messed up here and will not do anything about this. I think that the media should get involved because they probably wont do anything about if someone doesnt speak up! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 mitsubishi diamante. While driving 37 mph, the vehicle jerked and the service engine warning indicator light illuminated. The contact attempted to accelerate and pull off the road, but when the engine revved, the vehicle moved approximately three feet and stopped. The vehicle had experienced this failure on two occasions. The dealer replaced the transmission at 20,000 miles. The contact also stated that the windshield was severely fogged. The dealer replaced the heater core because it was leaking antifreeze into the cooling system. The driver was nauseated for two weeks. The vin was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 80,000.
Notice thick residue on front window and was not able to remove it with defogger. Notice lose of antifreeze which caused over heating and potential engine ceasing. Then noticed passenger side carpet was full of anti-freeze. After intense cleaning and attempts to fix the problem, it still emits a maple syrup anti freeze toxic fume
I purchased 2002 mitusbishi diamante ls with 35000 miles from the mitsubishi dealer in san bernardino, california. After driving off i noticed a smell of maple syrup. I also noticed that my eyes burned and itched when the heater was on. This was likely due to the white cloud that came from the heater duct. It was also causing cloudy windows that made safe navigation impossible. The carpet i starting to puddle with antifreeze on the passenger side. I took it in for a routine oil change, and had the dealer mechanic check the smell. They informed me that the heater core was leaking, and would need to be replaced. Their quote was $1060 and was not covered by my bumper to bumper warranty. This is a health hazard and the leaky heater core could cause massive damage to the computer that controls the engine. They will not correct the problem even thoug it wa a problem at drive off.*ak
Heater core failed to work for six weeks, fumes went through the vents and anti freeze leaked into the passenger's side carpet and padding, vehicle taken to dealership on 12/12/00, vehicle returned to dealership on 1/3/01 for the same problem, on 1/10/00 owner went into respiratory arrest, on 2/3/00 owner found heater core duck taped, heater core box cracked, pungent odor still exists which hazardous to health. Cj
While driving front passenger side mirror caught on fire. Manufacturer was contacted. *ak
Engine And Engine Cooling 109 Read
Heater core (and possible effect on transmission issues) going up before its time (and this known to be a problem on the diamantes for over 3 years of the model) and causing antifreeze fumes and smoke to fill my car for months unnoticed exposing my family and self to nauseousness, headaches, not to mention expense of repair on a relatively new vehicle. *nm
Smell of anti freeze 3 months ago while heater was running. Windows starting to fog and unable to defrost/defog. Will have to schedule a repair with the dealer. This is a major safety concern as coolant vapor is toxic to breathe and electrical control components to engine may be damaged if leaking into electrical connections or devices; traction control and throttle control being the most dangerous and possibly fatality causing. *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2002 mitsubishi diamante. The contact stated that while driving at 75 mph, the contact attempted to brake but the brakes failed to respond without any warnings. The vehicle crashed into a passenger van. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact mentioned that two months prior to the failure the check engine light had illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and was informed that the vehicle misfires, needed spark plugs, a fuel pump, a fuel injector, an egr valve, and the engine surged erratically. The failure and current mileage was 140,000. Updated 12/06/12*lj updated 12/6/2012 *js

My 2002 mitsubishi diamante has o ring failure in the heater coil. I have read many complaints that this is common on this model and would like a recall on these vehicles due to the extreme nature of the issue. With the failure of the o rings come potential anti freeze vapors entering passenger compartment and causing physical damage to all passengers. It may also cause the car to overheat in the middle of heavy stop and go traffic and cause accidents and/or death. It may also cause the heating element to no longer work and passengers in the extreme winter climates may be susceptible to physical harm or death. Lastly, this is a rampant known issue with these vehicles and should be corrected at dealer cost. My car cost originally $30,000. And i would expect the american government to make these companies back up the vehicles they are selling to the american public and make them safe and worth the money that is spent on them. *tr
My car is making me sick. I purchased my car in aug. 2001 and began to notice a smell in the car and fume closely resembling that of radiator coolant. The car was assesed by a mitsubishi district manager and service personnel from my dealer and deemed to be sound. In the mean time i have suffered with runny eyes and intermittent paralysis in the right side of my face dependent on the amount of time spent in the car. I have contacted mitsubishi numerous times about this and received no assistance. In november 2004 i noticed an increase in this smell and fogging problems of the interior windows. I took the car to the dealer telling them that i believed the problem was with the heater core. I ascertained this information through internet research dealing with mitsubishi diamante defects and problems. The car was returned to me with this problem more severe than when i took it in for repair. Any help or ideas that you can offer would be greatlly appreciated. *ak
The fumes of antifreeze fogged up the windows severely, reducing visibility of the driver. It was raining one night and my windows all of a sudden got foggy. I turned on the defroster, which made my windows even foggier. The poor visibility caused me to run off the road into the grassy median. I was out of town when this occurred. In doing research on this problem i found that it was common all diamantes (92 -2001). In many cases, the driver is not aware that this is a severe problem. The antifreeze will started leaking on the passenger?s side area. Causing more strong smell of toxic antifreeze. I believe this to be a safety issue. *ak
I have a 2003 mitsubishi diamante ls with 71677 miles on it all of the sudden my husband (the primary driver) tells me that every time he gets out of the car he feels light headed and nauseous. Days later the front windshield started fogging up while driving and after turning the car off (whether it is warm or cold outside) i googled why would this happen and have spoken with a few mechanics and they are telling me that it is the heater core going out, and that the reason why my husband is getting light headed and nauseous is because there is anti-freeze coming into the interior of the car which is very detrimental to your health. I have read a ton of complaints on different websites and they all say the same thing. I contacted mitsubishi corporate today and spoke with a [xxx] in customer service and explained to her what was going on and asked why mitsubishi has not done anything about this. First because of the health implications, secondly because of the safety issue of the windshield fogging up while you're driving to where you can't see and thirdly that from reading the complaints, the heater core is right above the computer in the car so if the heater core is leaking antifreeze, it could fry the computer and cause a possible crash if the car were to stop suddenly. She said that "seeing that i hadn't had the car into a dealership in the last year that there is nothing they can do about it". I told her that it just started and what was i suppose to do, look into my crystal ball and know a year ahead of time that the heater core was going to go out. This is ludicrous! ! ! Mitsubishi knows that this is a serious issue and are not doing one thing to fix it (by issuing a recall) where do we diamante owners go to get some help? Do we need to file a class action lawsuit as that seems like the only way a fire is going to get lit under them (corporations tend to act if it means losing tons of money) the car can't be driven and i'm still paying on it. I have a 2002 mitsubishi diamante. I have kept regular maintenance. I am submitting this form because of a heater core issue i am having. However i have had the following problems with this car. All these problems seem to be recurring problems that happen to many people with this model. At least that is what i find when i search the issues on the internet 1- vibration in steering wheel --this happened multiple times after taking car back to dealer-it appears there is a known issue with the rotors in this car. After having the rotors cut twice by the dealer with no long lasting success. I had to have the brakes and rotors replaced by a mechanic ( car had less the 10,000 miles when issue started happening) 2- rusted muffler--not sure if this issue happens often but after 23,000 miles i had to have my muffler replaced because there was a hole rusted through the top of it-i was told this could happen for not using the car very much in the winter time( road salt can cause the rust) 3- heater core- i know have a heater core problem in this car. I have antifreeze leaking in passenger compartment. I have an antifreeze smell in the cabin of the car. My windows fog and the defroster will not clear the windshield ( makes it worse). I am low in antifreeze because of this. My service engine light has now come on and i am told this can be caused by leaking antifreeze onto the computer which is positioned under the heater core. This issue is widely reported on the internet in many forums and seems everybody with a diamante will eventually have this problem. I am being told this repair can cost over 1,000 dollars 4-i have had to replace 3 sensors in the engine 2 egr and 1 idle sender (cost around 1,500 dollars). This may or may not be because of the heater core issues causing the cars computer to fail. *tr

The diamante has an odd issue where the vehicle will not shift gears correctly which an extremely dangerous issue for drivers. The information board shows the transaction rapidly switching from neutral to drive excessively. I have had multiple mechanic shops look into this issue from transmission specialists, to electrical specialist and have had no positive results.
Cpsc#i11b0131a. 2004 mitsubishi diamante. F4a51 automatic transmission failure. *ln the consumer stated she has concerns with the safety and reliability of mitsubishi and dodge vehicles and their owners that have the mitsubishi f4a51 automatic transmission in certain make/models. The main issues seemed to be a manufacturing defect in the wave/cushion spring located in the transmission designed the wave spring as a fragile two coil piece which has been known to repeatedly break causing catastrophic failure in the transmission. When the wave breaks, actual pieces of the wave spring make it through mitsubishi's also faulty transmission filter and lodge themselves in the pump gear, causing the hear to actually break. The main issue seems to be a manufacturing defect in the wave/cushion spring located in the transmission. Mitsubishi has designed the wave spring as a fragile two coil piece which has been known to repeatedly break causing catastrophic failure in the transmission. This in turn poses a threat on the driver and passengers. When this wave spring breaks, actual pieces of the wave spring make it through mitsubishis also faulty transmission filter and lodge themselves in the pump gear, causing the gear to actually break. After the pump gear has been broken inside the transmission, all forward and reverse gears immediately stop function and in most instances the vehicle shuts off. This could result in potential harm or even death of the driver and/or passenger as the vehicle loses all moving power which can cause an accident with other vehicles on the road. Mitsubishi has recently created an updated version of the wave spring without issuing a recall, which now is a one piece instead of the coil setup and has a less chance of breaking.this update was discovered after they i had my vehicle in a transmission shop with a hefty bill to pay ($3,700) even though it was mitsubishis fault for engineering a faulty part in their transmission. All one person would need to find out about this issue is search the internet with the transmission code (f4a51) and this issue is well documented, even researched by transmission digest (a specialty magazine). Not only is this a large inconvenience, it is also a hazard to ones life. Mitsubishi should recall all vehicles which contain the f4a51 automatic transmission to perform the wave spring and filter update or reimburse those, like myself, who have already had it done at my cost. *tr

I own a 2003 mitsubishi diamante, around 60k miles i started noticing a sweet smell from the vents and a constant fog when the heat or air was turned on in the car. After taking my car to the mechanic i was told that my heater core was busted. My car also sdriving in "safe mode" meaning i can only run in second gear which is burning a tank of gas every three day, i love 10 miles from work. My car flashed in neutral will in drive. After researching my problems i've notice well over 1000 posted via internet from other mitsubishi diamante owners having the same issue. Its hard to believe this vehicle has not be recalled. There are great risks of inhaling anti freeze which is seeping into the car through the floor boards and vents. I have an asthmatic child who has been driving in the car until the problem was brought to my attention. This leak may also make the computer system in the vehicle go out. Something needs to be done before an accident is caused or a life is taken. *tr

I own a 2003 diamante mitsubishi. The problem started with a check engine light coming on, fogging the window with a fowl toxic smell then the car would not hardly move out gear. I was told that the car's heater core leaked onto the computer which caused the transmission relay to short out do to the computer failing. The computer was still under warranty at 78,000 miles but i still had to pay for the new computer system because i was told that it was the heater core that caused the computer to fail. This is such a poor design! The computer should have been protected in such a case...funny thing it is now that i have had to replace a heater core, a computer and a transmission relay at a cut wrenching cost of $3,675.58. I wrote a letter to the president of north america mitsubishi that the heater core should be a recall but to no avail. I have all maintenance records on the diamante so that was not what caused this heater failure. I do have the computer that was replaced. It is now april and the check engine light has come back on...now what? Aj *tr

I own a 2002 mitsubishi diamante car, i bought this car in 02 since the 1st day i bought the car there was problems. When i call they tell me i have to pay out of pocket b/c the warranty expired. This isn't fair to any mitsubishi owner i shouldn't have to pay to have my car fixed now after the warranty when all the same problems have been recurring since i purchased the car and they never fixed it to begin with. Goodyear eagle tires, make winding noise when vehicle is in motion. Dealer claimed that this was caused by lack of tire rotation, i have rotated this tires every 6,000 miles, since the day i bought the car new. The problem started after the car had about 2,000 miles, car has been to the dealer two times and the problem has not resolved, vehicle has 24,000 miles, it came with 36,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty. I thought that when you buy a new car the tires are also under the original warranty, but evidently the dealer does not want to honor this. At about 95000 miles i noticed the vehicle becoming very hard to drive whenever there was slight moisture or snow on the roads. After inspecting i noticed both rear wheels tipped in at the top substantially. The left rear wheel was also towed out at the front and both rear tires were almost completely worn even though i had just replaced them about 25000 mile prior. I took it to a local shop who informed me that there was a technical service bulletin out for bushings that press into the rear knuckles wearing prematurely. I have since moved the front tires to the rear and those have completely worn out. I understand i will need to have these bushings replaced and have the suspension aligned to fix the problem. This is a huge expense and without knowing what to look for the vehicle goes from a nice ride to almost impossible to drive in a very short time. I believe this is a huge safety concern and alot of people will be unaware of the problem or continue to drive the vehicle this way because it is very expensive to fix. *tr
