How to read a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross VIN — every digit explained
Every Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Mitsubishi and the country it was built in.
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Eclipse Cross.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Eclipse Cross VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross recalls 1
Electrical System:software
What's wrong. Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) is recalling certain 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Outlander Sport, 2018-2019 Eclipse Cross, and 2017-2018 Outlander vehicles equipped with a Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) system that detects pedestrians. Due to incorrect software, the FCM-ECU (Electronic Control Unit) may apply braking for longer than needed, even after a pedestrian is no longer detected.
Risk. If the FCM-ECU software activates the brake for longer than necessary, the driver may react by applying additional braking. The resulting rapid deceleration of the vehicle can increase the risk of a rear-end collision.
Fix. MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the FCM-ECU software with updated software, free of charge. The recall is began October 16, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-007.

Forward Collision Avoidance: Adaptive Cruise Control
What's wrong. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vehicles equipped with a Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) system and 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross vehicles and 2017-2018 Outlander vehicles equipped with an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system and/or an Electric Parking Brake (EPB) system. The software for the Hydraulic Unit Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may be incorrect, possibly preventing the intervention of a safety system such as automatic emergency braking, Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), or the Brake Auto Hold (BAH) function when any of these systems are in use.
Risk. If the safety systems do not function as intended, it can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix. MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will update the Hydraulic Unit-ECU software, free of charge. The recall began October 16, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-008.

Electrical System 17 Read
The day after I purchased this car I returned to dealership bc my phone would not connect which was the single reason for choosing this car, I was promised it was a simple update problem over the next few weeks I realized there were more issues with the electrical system as if the car had a mind of its own. The dealership promised everything and delivered nothing the phone never connected to the car Mitsubishi blamed the dealership the dealership playing Mitsubishi everybody took my money and laughed their way to the bank nobody picks the problem and everyone ignored me for whatever reason lemon law didn't apply because the car never went in for service it was all "remote" and upload download updates ECT... Months went by and no one would help the car already cost me a fortune bc of all the lies the dealer made and their refusal to return my trade in after repeatedly asking since their vehicle did not work. I have the upgraded model w all the extra safety features however when I was involved in a hit n skip several weeks ago not one single air bag deployed, the car did not recognize the collision nor did it automatically contact emergency services. I was driving approx 35 MPH and slammed by a old full size pickup truck coming out of a parking aggressively trying to get away impacting the passenger front quarter panel and door driving the wheel wheel into the tire. Everyone who sees the car or sees pictures thinks the car is totaled the impact was so hard a aluminum thermos filled with iced tea with grown from the passenger seat on top of the dashboard almost breaking the windshield yet the car did not detect a collision I have emails after email alerting the dealer and manufacturer this car was dangerous and not working correctly and no one would respond now it is obvious the car has NOT BEEN FIXED YET honestly I don't want it they would not listen now they can see for themselves and take it back it's DANGEROUS BEEN DANGEROUS WILL ALWAYS BE DANGEROUS
It appears the EclipseCross electrical system shut down while traveling in a rain storm causing a accident when engine shut down and steering was affected, this caused vehicle to lose control and hit concrete barrier. Air bags were deployed except for the driver side that took the impact, reason unknown. Vehicle was a total loss as judged by the insurance company. Driver was injured but sustained only minor injuries, but this situation did affect 2 other vehicles. Electrical "glitch" happened once before but was so minor as noted it shut off can came back on while driving it appeared to be a fluke incident.
I was driving my vehicle on 11/12/19, presses the brakes in preparation to make a turn. The brakes failed and would not stop the vehicle , the abs , brake assist and hill assist did not work, which resulted in me being unable to stop the vehicle . The end result was me getting into a collision causing over $4000 worth of damage to my vehicle , with it only having 865 miles at the time . When i bought the vehicle the headlights also didn't work, although the vehicle was purchased brand new. Please note when the collision occurred i was driving on the street .
After purchasing my vehicle on 10/31/18, i experienced 6 headlight changes from that point till 4/19/20. On 4/19/20, while driving i smelled an electrical burning smell. As i proceeded to pull to a safe location my headlight indicator light came then i loss all power and function of the vehicle.pressing the breaks and pulling the emergency break multiple times did not stop the vehicle. Approximately 150 yards ahead i spotted a shopping center entrance. As i proceeded to attempt a hard right turn into the parking lot when fire began shooting over the front windshield and side fenders. I finally got the vehicle to stop after pumping the hand break several times and exited the vehicle. The result of this faulty electrical system caused me to total my car.
My vehicle had been parked for 24 hours and the next day I went to get something out of the vehicle and couldn’t get in with key fin I then used the manual key and the inside of vehicle had a fire from radio to the rear view mirror burned down as if it was a manufactured issue

This vehicle is a safety hazard to anyone on the road, especially the driver and passenger of said vehicle. It has been in an out of the shop for a multitude of issues. It has an issue that cannot be fixed of a faulty gas reading causing a person to never know how much gas they truly have causing them to overfill or run out. Mitsubishi is aware of the issue yet does not have a fix so this is an ongoing issue that has resulted in dealership putting lots of miles on to diagnose with no prevail as well as the vehicle being in the shop on a regular basis. Issue two and most recent on july 16 while traveling at 80 mph on the interstate the electrical system started to glitch results in mirrors opening and closing, doors locking and unlocking and electrical system clicking noises. The following day again at high speeds on a busy metro interstate while using gps the vehicles entire electrical system started to cycle on and off. (while these are the two current ongoing issues i have a stack if repair orders of other issues such as vehicle shaking above 60mph, electrical issues with the mirrors, clunking noises upon turning, you name it! This specific vehicle should not be on the road!) i can send futher documentation as required as it exceeds max upload.

Brakes are season up at only 42,000 miles
While parked, ASC system service required indicator light came on. Car was then disabled and unable to be started for approximately 1-2 hours. That happened twice in 2023. While driving on the highway in 2025, ASC system service required, abs system service required, four wheel drive system service required, power steering system service required indicator lights all came on and total loss of power steering while driving approximately 40-50mph.
When i use the acc, and the highway is hilly, the acc will engage the fcm (forward collision mitigation), resulting in the brakes being applied, sometimes forcefully, resulting in an immediate slow down of my vehicles speed. This can cause accidents as those around me had to slam on their brakes as well. When going up and down hills, the acc does not work properly. This has occurred many times from the time i bought the vehicle until now.
At times when i am driving the passenger air bag is turned off. Some times my car emergency break comes on but there is no one in front of me
After starting the car, and going in reverse, you can hear a cracking or clicking noise (it's really hard to tell), and sometimes it's really loud, if the brakes or something else was stuck and was about to break a part. It sounds on the read side and in the front side too. You can hear one or 3 clicks. I took my car to the dealer around 3 times in 5 months and first, i was told its normal, the second time i was pushy, and it was a matter of lubrication i wasn't told where exactly, and the last time the dealership manager told me that service department had to keep the car for a week, ( i got a loaner, but it has the same issue). The service department replaced the brake system, and rotors, inspect and lubricate all parts. But, i was told that they couldn't pin point the problem. The noise stopped, but i was told if it comes back, i had to take the car back to the dealer. After this incident, the next day in the morning while driving to work, my car stopped working, i couldn't break (i was driving at 27mph), the steering wheel got locked, i got all the alarms on, fcm, power steering problem, abs problem, asc, acc not available. I got really affraid, luckily i had no cars around.
Stopped at a red light. Light turned green stepped on the gas, truck accelerated. Then began to feel like something wasn't normal, engine began to make quick high and low pitched sounds. Was only going 10mph if that. Tried to step on the brakes and pull over, but the brakes didn't respond. Then tried to step on the gas slightly to pull over, but the gas pedal also didn't respond. I was able to let the truck roll to a stop in the right turning lane, put it in park, and turn on the hazards. Then followed every possible service light came on. The engine never actually stalled. It was still running but not responsive to the brake or gas pedals. I attempted to 'reset' the car, as per the manual suggested. Turned it off for 5 minutes and then back on. The high and low pitch sounds continued, service lights remained lit, and vehicle was still unresponsive. Roadside assistance was then called and towed the truck to the dealership i leased from. Thankfully i wasn't going more than 10mph when my brakes failed and was able to roll to a stop, opposed to being on the highway going 60mph, as i was just 10 minutes before this occurred. The truck is not even 3 months old, with only 3,600 approx. Miles.

The driver's airbag exploded on my left side, cutting my left arm and rendering me deaf in both ears from the impact when i was hit on the left rear panel by a motorcycle, killing the rider. My hearing is permanently damaged and i have sustained back and neck injury. I was in a median between four lanes of traffic on a state road and stationary when hit. My car was turned completely around by the impact and the airbag exploded after i was sitting still, which was a huge shock to me. It was a delayed reaction. The left rear panel was destroyed and the rear window and the vehicle was considered totaled. *tr *js

I was driving late at night in normal weather on a regular 1 lane street when my passenger side airbag went off for no reason causing me to lose control of the car which went into a full 360 spin out causing damage to the tires and frame making the car no longer drivable. It has not been inspected or repaired because our insurance had just lapsed and we don’t know what to do in this situation. It is available for inspection as it just sits at our house.
Bought the car from dealer in lasvegas an the back seat airbags had been tampered with, the car had about 13,500 miles on car from a rental agency but car dealer had car back an offered the 60,000mile guarantee on car for the remaining miles when i called dealer in st. Louis, moi said emergency light just started coming on when i got home from lasvegas .my dealer thought maybe an animal had chewed through wires in back seats but when they checked they found out that someone had cut the wires an taped them back together, an said they could noy fix them because someone had tampered with them.also the dealer in lasvegas did a high pressure sales routine on us to sell us extra ins. On the rest of the car so if something was wrong then it woulld be covered, no matter what it was at first theywanted about another $4000 but i said i would never pay that much but then they continued to pressure us to buy it until i agreed to pay extra over $2000 for all rest of car insurance. The dealer on st . Charles rock road did the inspections in st.,louis county mo. They took pictures an documented all of what they did to the car .the only thing i could get the dealer to fix was oil filter was also put on car from lasvegas dealer but it was not an authorized oil filter so the las vegas dealer agreed to pay for oil filter and oil change to st louis mo dealer . Las vegas dealer said they would not have anything else fixed even though they said they did not know who could have cut the wires an then taped them back. Also i went on line to see repair records of car rental company and las vegas dealer but none of their records said they had done any repairs to the airbags at all, so they assumed that someone else did this, but why would i buy extra ins coverage and then try to do something i had no idea to fix when i had paid for it to be done by the dealer???????????not sure of dates?????
When i plug my phone in and set it on the passengers seat , the passengers side airbag and seat-belt system activate. The airbag light turns on like someone is siting there , and the fasten seat belt light flashes. If i lift the charging phone off the seat and set it in the center consul , the system returns to normal - airbag light and fasten seat-belt light turn off. I had the system checked out at my dealership and their conclusion is to not set anything on the passengers seat , and it does state in owners manual to not set anything on the passengers seat. However this issue only occurs when the phone is plugged in and sitting on passenger seat. The issue does not happen if any other object is placed on the passengers seat or if the phone is unplugged and sitting on passenger seat. This issue will happen weather the car is in park or driving. The issue did not begin to happen until approximately 30 days after i bought the vehicle new on july 24 , 2020. Now the issue happens consistently , but not every time.
At times when i am driving the passenger air bag is turned off. Some times my car emergency break comes on but there is no one in front of me

know every motor is different and many resources have different stats, The engine in my 2019 Eclipse Cross has excessive oil consumption. The engine is consuming approximately 2.5-quarts (2.3-liters) of oil in approximately 2,500 to 3,000-miles (4,000 to 4,828-kilometers). The vehicle is approximately 4-years old and less than 50,000-miles. Using the best mileage in Mitsubishi's favor and an average of 30 mpg (my car computer has my average mileage higher) the oil consumption rate is at 0.6% for the engine. Ibut the common accepted stat for passenger car oil consumption is 0.05% for new motors. Mitsubishi's motor is consuming 12-times what is considered normal for a motor. This is a well documented problem on the internet, with repairs already required in Australia. Mitsubishi will not contact me (or the Dealer Service Center) back regarding this issue.
Stalls out when driving Vehicle dealership has not been any help with getting issues fixed despite having purchased vehicle within past 6 months, and having engine issues since purchase. Charged for extra warranties not honored
Exhaust fumes getting into cabin causing headache, fatigue, and concentration issues. Several dealerships in the area are aware of issue but no solution from mitsubishi. Dealer ship also confirmed exhaust smell in car and attempted at severl repairs without resolution.

Shift lever/gear control and indicator devices: The vehicle can be switched off even when it isn't in park, and this action does not engage the parking function. Instead, it remains in Neutral, which means the car may roll—even on a slight slope like a driveway. This poses a safety risk as the car could potentially move and endanger people exiting the vehicle. If the person is not attentive or physically unable to react quickly, child/elderly/pets, anyone really, the door could knock them over, possibly causing more serious bodily harm from the tires or other parts of the vehicle since it continues to move.

Without any warning after traveling downstate with our family the transmission let go. Never any warning lights, no transmission slippage. We went into a store and when we left the car wouldn't move. Mitsubishi dealer gave me a quote for a new transmission, and it cost what I owe on the car.

The problem: You can drive fast or slow and at any given moment, the car display all alarms like the adaptive cruise control, emergency brake, engine. All the lights start to blink inside the car, there is a beep with those lights. The steering wheel does not move, gets locked, the brakes get locked (you cannot move the steer wheel or press the brakes), the engine starts to make a rattling sound and the car starts to bounce, then slowly the car starts shutting down until its off. This problem has been happening since I bought the car brand new on 2018. At the beginning, the car was inside the dealership ever so often to try to fix that problem. That recall was presented in other VIN numbers but not mine, but the dealer decided to "so call" fix it. The problem stopped happening for a while, then started again. It went back to the dealership in Schaumburg Mitsubishi. They told me without a receipt or notice, they fix it, again. When the dealership closed, I didnt know where to go or what to do. The case number left in Mitsubishi motors was only available for a year, so when I called again, I had to make a new case but there was no dealer no more. When I went to Gregory Mitsubishi, I explained the problem but they couldnt find anything and they couldnt get any information about my history because Schaumburg Mitsubishi was gone. I know how to manage the problem, I just have to move back to a safe spot quickly, sometimes doing unsafe maneuvers, so I wont cause an accident. This year so far, has happened another 4-5 times and I dont know what to do, because Jidd Mitsubishi dont want to do anything about it.

The contact owned a 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, he became aware that the vehicle was not responding to operator inputs—acceleration, braking, or steering. As a result, the contact briefly lost control of the vehicle, only coming to a complete stop after, running a stop sign, leaving the roadway, and colliding with a tree and ravine where it came to stop. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed a total loss by the contact's insurance provider. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. Police officers assisted with removing the contact from the vehicle. The contact sustained various injuries, including bruises, scratches, and cuts, but did not seek medical attention. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 108,000.
Electrical "glitch" happened once before but was so minor as noted it shut off can came back on while driving it appeared to be a fluke incident.

the vehicle has steered to the right since I purchased the car with under 20 miles. at 16504 while the car is in park and on there is this strong vibration throughout the whole vehicle.
The 1st day i purchased my car, it was pulling to one side and swaying from left to right. Because i purchased my car late one saturday evening, and the dealership closed until the following monday, i couldn't make a report until that monday morning. The 'head' mechanic at the dealership took my car for a drive with me riding with him, and stated, 'the pulling and swaying you feel is normal. The way these cars are made were computerized this way.'. Because i'm not familiar with cars, i took the mechanic at his word until about 1.5 months later i lost control of my car sliding partially off the road. I filed a complaint with mitsubishi @ 1-888-648-7820, file [xxx]. I have not received a resolution to this problem, and i have been getting the run around ever since. It's been almost 4 months now. I spoke with marius at mitsubishi manufacturing, and then i was referred to larry johnson at don herring mitsubishi in irving texas.

What sets your Eclipse Cross's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
