How to read a Mitsubishi Eclipse VIN — every digit explained

Every Mitsubishi Eclipse carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Eclipse.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Eclipse VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse recalls 1

Service Brakes, Hydraulic:antilock/traction Control/electronic Limited Slip:control Unit/module15V337000

What's wrong. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Eclipse vehicles manufactured April 20, 2005, to February 13, 2009, and 2007-2009 Eclipse Spyder vehicles manufactured December 23, 2005, to February 13, 2009. Due to corrosion inside the antil-lock brake system (ABS) unit, one or more of the internal valves may seize. In a braking event that uses the ABS, a seized valve would increase brake pedal travel and reduce braking ability.

Risk. A sudden reduction of braking performance may increase the risk of a crash.

Fix. MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, flush and clean the ABS hydraulic unit using high grade brake fluid, free of charge. If the inspection shows that the valves may seize, the ABS unit will be replaced. The recall began on July 21, 2015. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-15-004.

Power Train:automatic Transmission06V414000

What's wrong. On certain vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, the key lock cable was improperly manufactured and may not allow the cable end to lock into the floor shifter mechanism. This can result in the interlock system to become inoperative and allow the ignition key to be removed without the gearshift mechanism being placed in the park position.

Risk. If the driver does not shift to park before removing the key and fails to engage the parking brake, the vehicle could roll and a crash could occur.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the ignition interlock cable and replace it if necessary. The recall began on november 20, 2006. Owners may contact mitsubishi at 1-888-648-7820.

Structure:frame And Members06V334000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles, the metal forming part of the front crossmember may have been improperly stamped resulting in the metal becoming thinner in the cross-section than specified. This could, over time, result in breakage of the crossmember.

Risk. Breakage of the crossmember may allow separation of the passenger side lower control arm, which may result in the loss of steering control increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix. Dealers will inspect and replace the crossmember free of charge. The recall began on september 21, 2006. Owners may contact mitsubishi at 888-648-7820.

Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly08V454000

What's wrong. Mitsubishi is recalling 45,988 my 2005-2007 endeavor, galant, eclipse coupe, and my 2007 eclipse spyder vehicles. The bracket that is the attachment point for the left rear fuel tank mounting strap may have been improperly formed during a metal stamping process. The process may have caused the metal to have a split in the area where the bolt that holds one of the two fuel tank straps to the underside of the vehicle is located. In the event the fuel tank is full and the vehicle is subject to a severe collision, the bracket may break and allow the fuel tank to drop down, possibly causing a fuel leak.

Risk. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.

Fix. Dealers will inspect to see if the left rear fuel tank strap mounting bracket has splitting beyond a specific limit. Vehicles with moderate to severe splitting will be repaired using a reinforcement cap, a special structural adhesive, and a rivet to reinforce the fuel tank mounting bracket. The recall began on september 20, 2008. Owners may contact mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037.

Tl* the contact owned a 2008 mitsubishi eclipse. While driving approximately 55 mph, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when depressed and the vehicle continued to accelerate. The vehicle spun out of control and the transmission shifted independently into the reverse position, which caused the vehicle to crash into a tree. The contact sustained injuries to the head, right arm, and fingers. The contact also suffered from a large hematoma on the right hip. The front passenger sustained head injuries. Medical attention was required for the injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a salvage facility. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. 2000 Eclipse

On march 31, 2001, my husband and i purchased a 2001 eclipse for our 17 year old son, to carry him through highschool and college. Around 3 hours later he braked to avoid hitting 2 dogs, the left front brake locked up and the others did nothing. This caused the car to swing around at 180 degrees and go backwards into a ditch hitting a steel culbert. The police stated that the cause of the accident was the brakes. If working properly, the car could have been controlled. No ticket was given to our son. He and his friend has neck and back pain. Hopefully it will heal. The trauma is still there for our son i know. The thought of what could have happened is horrific if he had been by a bluff, on a major interstate or etc. Now the car is wrecked, and the expense is ours, this was a gift, he is a responsible child, the brakes that was put on this car could have caused much more damage to these children. I am unsettled on what to do, i am checking into it, hopefully someone will take this serious enough to put a stop to this problem. We thank god for [xxx] and his friends life, but the injury's are there and it is very traumatic. We are thankful not to have been at the point of a funeral for one or both. Now [xxx] is shy to drive, believe me, this does traumatized one. The point is, i need help to get this fixed, the brakes, the car, and it not to happen again to anyone, it is to late if they are killed. As a parent i am horrified, does these manufacture not have to be responsible for their parts, no matter the age one life is to much. Please help if you can, i will use what ever avenue i have to for help. Thank you, sincerely -- [xxx]. *ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I was driving on a dead end street and the brakes went all the way to the floor and i had no stopping or slowing down even with pumping the brakes i had the brakes checked a month prior to this because the brake and abs light would come on randomly and the technician at morries mazda reported to me they were operational.. I ended up hitting a tree (my choices were a line of cars or a tree, so i picked the tree) with the brake malfunction and no air bags deployed at around 30 plus mph. And i sustained injuries. When i looked at the brakes it appeared that the front passenger side brake was the only operational brake as it was the only rotor to not have accumulated a high amount of rust.

Takata airbag: my incident has already been reported. I am adding the police report. I am still requiring surgery and unable to use my left arm 10 months later.

2003 Eclipse

I have only had the car for a little over a year. I have absolutely loved the car besides having to take it in within like 3 months to replace a deffective transmission. I have am a person that have been in many close accident calls throughout my life so i am not a person who takes the car to the limit whatsoever. I have had defective cars all my life. My first car i was in a near death call in my first accident when a man in a rush decided to try to pass me while i was doing a u-turn. My second i bought for $4000 and put over 2k in it trying to get it fixed and running. My third car i bought was a toyota camry. It was a great car but also had to put $1,500 into a car i bought for only lik 5k, when the manufacturer told me that they couldnt fix the problem and i had wasted every dime i had on this car. My last and present car is my 2003 mitsubishi eclipse gt. My mother didn't like all the problems i was having with all of my previous cars, so when i received an academic scholarship to any school in florida she went out and bought me the eclipse. To get back to the problem at hand, at 10,000 miles i started having problems with my clutch. The car will severely jerk when switching gears every time i start the car. I took the car into my local mitsubishi dealer and they told me it was not under warranty which didn't make sense. The car was under 12k miles and i thought there was a warranty up till then. Anyways, i am not the person to argue so i said "ok" and went on my way. Well, it has gotten worse and i believe could have played a large part in my only other accident. But the bad thing is that now i am at 14, 438 miles, which either way is over the 12k mile warranty if there was one. I have all original receipts to prove that i started having clutch problems before i hit 12k miles and i am not sure if i can do anything. I got a quote of over $1,000 to buy the clutch and install it. What can i do?*ak

2007 Eclipse

My car was stolen last year by someone i knew, and was wrecked. After the wreck, myself and pennsylvania state police spoke to the person and he said the accident was caused because the brakes failed to engage as he was making a turn and the right lower control arm failed, which caused the tie rod to snap which punctured through the wheel and out the tire. Damage done to the vehicle confirms this, and i have pictures and documentation to support this claim. Car was left on the side of the road with entire front right suspension detached, cv shaft ripped out from the manual transmission, entire front right wheel hub assembly was ripped off, caliper, brake pads and rotor remained attached to the hub, but were disconnected from the vehicle. The wheel also remained intact on the hub. There was significant front end damage to the bumper, fender, inner wheel hub splash guards, headlight, etc. Air bags did not deploy. His seat belt did not lock on impact. Car was totaled and considered salvage, but i reconstructed it and have over $4,500 invested in repairs that could have been avoided if the brakes and lower control arm worked properly. He was traveling on a side street through a small town around 11pm on a clear, warm night. No other moving cars were on the road at the time, but he did side swipe several parked cars.

Dt: the contact stated the vehicle caught on fire. It began as a noise and then the engine area caught on fire. They were no unusual indicators before the fire. The vehicle was burned very badly. The cause of the fire was left undetermined, and vehicle was towed to the insurance company's salvage yard. The dealership and the manufacturer where not contacted because the warranty expired. The police department was notified and a report was taken. The insurance company provided the contact a report of a possible cause of the fire. The report stated a hose defect from the manufacturer could have caused the automatic transmission cooling unit and lines to leak over a period of time. Therefore, the fluid leakage from the cooling hose could cause trans axle problems and smoke if the oil contacted the front exhaust pipe.*ak

The rims on the 2001 mitsubishi eclipse dent easily and the tires blow out or lose pressure as a result of normal wear and driving. Normal potholes and bumps are enough to cause damage. I had a blowout yesterday january 15th, 2005. I have previously replaced 2 rims and 3 tires as a result of this. All four rims are currently dented as a result of this issue. 2003 Eclipse

On november 28, 2015 my passenger front tire explosively failed coming out of a left turn at about 25 mph causing my car to drop and swerve, crashing into a tall street curb and storm sewer drain causing $2000 damage to my car. The outer sidewall separated circumferentially from the tread. This premium tire was only seven months old with minimal wear. I check my tire pressure and fluids every time i buy gas, overhauled the suspension that summer and didn't believe it was my fault. I took the tire still on the damaged wheel to a tire failure expert who ruled out pre-existing damage, unusual wear or signs of driving with low or high tire pressure; he stated there was a zipper failure resulting from a bad tire. This was the second goodyear assurance tripletred to fail on my car. I contacted goodyear and filed a claim with their property claims team. I had replaced the wheel and tire and got two conservative estimates. They required the tire to be taken off the wheel and shipped to them for inspection. Without explanation, it sat delayed at the goodyear tire and service center for weeks. The claim, #492513, was quickly denied; i received a letter which i followed up with a phone call to clarify. Goodrich claim's team stated that they were unable to determine why the tire blew out so they refused to honor the warranty. There were no signs of it being my fault but they also didn't find an obvious defect that would cause the blowout so they conveniently denied taking responsibility for their tire or the damage from the crash that resulted from it's failure. The manufacturer of a critical component like a tire can't just refuse to be responsible when it fails and they don't to know why. I was a lifetime loyal goodyear customer until this. I have the tire and wheel and photos and won't give up until they pay for the damages.

2002 Eclipse

I own a 2002 mitsubishi eclipse spyder gt. I was in a relatively minor car accident. About 2 months ofter the accident and repairs had been made, one of my tires could not hold tire pressure. I had the tires replaced on the vehicle. The same tire continued to go flat. I inspected the factory 17" alloy rim and i found a crack in the rim. I inspected the other rims as well and noticed similar smaller cracks forming. I do not now if the cracks are due to the accident or due to faulty workmanship. A well made rim would not have cracked due to a relativley minor impact. Accident report on file hamilton twp police. Accident not caused due to failure of the rim.*ak

While trying to avoid a spin out in heavy snow. I turned to into the curb to help stop my car. My wheel is aluminum spoke design. All the spokes fractured completely out of the wheel. The tire still had air. My wheel came off. My rotor hit the ground and busted. My dad who is a mechanic came out before the tow truck took my car off and he said he never seen anything like it. The same comment came from the tow truck driver and the service manager at mitsubishi. My car is low and the only body damage was from when the wheel dropped off added to when the tow truck lifted my front end. I was already in antilock mode and not going very fast in heavy snow conditions. At the most i should only have gotten a flat or bent rim.*ak

I have a mitisubishi eclipse 2003 100000 miles ( majority highway). In the spring of 08-the vehicle was making noise when accelerating, the vehicle was changing gears hard and was advise it was the transmission/motor mounds. The problem occurred intermittently while driving as much as 40mph. Took it back to mitisubishi dealer for service/diagnosis-told possible eventually trans, timing belt and possibly radiator, which was one of another consumers resolve. Well, they flush the radiator and it resolve the problem of driving but not the noise. Also june 2009-after driving 5 mph i noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment, the consumer pulled over ( call for tow and later opened the hood to see all the insulation smolder). After being stranded for over an hour i was towed to my destination. The car was later towed to contractor advise possible distributor, realized it was not the distributor and suggest car is towed to mitsubish for official computer service diagnosis ( due to car starting but not turning over). Advise, by the mitisubishi service tech all of the electrical wires were melted... Computer failure/extreme electrical system damage, harness melted etc; i ask the dealer service manager @ the dealership, what would cause this and had this happen before? He stated ?not sure of cause?and was really shocked to the damage "possible fuse, ignition wires something" not sure. Diagnostic testing cost $112.00 repair estimate $5400. We lease the vehicle from motor world, my son and myself have had accidents with the car that we feel are a direct result of the car not steering properly, or accelarating properly. I contacted mitsubishi motors of america as well as the dealer and my insurance company several times. The dealership had the car for 3 months supposedly fixing it and when i got it home i had it for a week and the whole car felt like it was falling apart. I took it back to them and it had a cracked motor mount and they supposedly fixed that. I have the car back for 2 wks now and it is making all kinds of noises and it has to go back to the dealers again for the 5th time. There is something radically wrong with that car and that is why we had the accidents. I contacted mitsubishi motors of america and i told them about a recall my state farm insurance said they got from you for the steering box which could cause the car not to turn to the left which is exactly what happened to my son amd myself, had we been on a hifhway we would have been killed.mitsubishi was supposed to send someone to look at the car while it was still at the body shop but they never did. Now the car is making all kinds of noises again and noone will help me. I'm afraid my son will be hurt in that car or i will.it's a 2001 car and it feels like it's 10 years old. Now i'm taking it to another dealership in allentown pa. To see if they can at least make it safe for me to drive. When i originally called mitsubishi motors of america they said the dealership had to give me a diagnosis as to why we had the accident ,noone ever gave me a diagnosis any of the 3 times. They pretty much told me to go to hell this morning over the phone. I told them i'd have to get a lawyer and they told me to go ahead. I tried ti trade up for a 2002 just to feel safe but mitsubishi motors of america wouldn't approve my credit for the newer car lease .ihave lots more to tell if someone calls me. Thank-you

I had no problem out of car leading up to the point at hand. I started the car and turned on the heat. The car ran for about 30 to 35 minutes. Ar was warm inside, i had to turn the heat off. I left my friends house headed up north i81. My car had no signs of problems. The car shot flames out either side of the car and my engine had exploded. I coasted down the road to put the flames out pulled into the emegency lane. Jumped out told my girlfriend to get out and away from the car. The engine was on fire still at this point. Luckaily a friend of mine had been following me and had something to extinguish the rest of the fire. The car was sold to me with the remainer of the power train warrenty. A mitsubishi rep read the computer codes. He said since the water temp read 64 degrees the car had been abused. Mitsubishi never contacted me to see if i had maintenance records. Which indeed i do have those documents. Plus i had 7 witnesses that night that knew the heat was working fine, meaning the water temp was above 64 degrees. Now how can a low water temp cause an engine to throw a rod. And catch on fire? O action was taken it actually took mitsubishi 3 months to decide the care would not be covered under warranty.*ak

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 mitsubishi eclipse spyder. While driving approximately 15 mph, the passenger side air bag deployed without warning or impact. When the air bag deployed, the visor on the vehicle detached. The vehicle's top was down at the time and caused the passenger side air bag to blow in the wind, which hindered the contact's view of the road. The contact attempted to pull the vehicle over but, due to the distraction of the air bag blowing, the contact struck a culvert, which caused the vehicle to stop and the driver side air bag to deploy. When the air bag deployed, it released a small spark and there was a burning odor. The vehicle was towed to a aaa transmission approved shop who stated that the vehicle needed several repairs. The contact broke several bones in her left hand through the forearm. Medical attention was needed. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. 2003 Eclipse

I was in a car accident. We were hit on the front corner of the drivers side. We were going 35mph and the other driver was going about that speed. He was turning from the opposite direction and turned right into us. I'm not sure if you would describe it as head on because it was at an angle. The whole front of our car was crushed in. The battery and radiator were pushed up near the dash. I was the passenger. My seat belt didn't lock up and my air bag didn't go off. I hit the rear view mirror and my knees slammed into the dash. I also twisted a vertebrae in my back and bruised or cracked a rib. It's been over 6 months and i still have trouble walking because i have tendinitis in my left knee and i have fluid on my knee from the impact. My fiance was driving. His knees hit the dash and one of them still bothers him. He has injuries to the tendons in his shoulder and he has a 2.8 mm cut in his thoracic spinal chord. His air bag did not go off either. Both of us had horrible bruising from the force of the crash. I believe our airbags should have gone off. The guy who hit us had very minor damage done to his vehicle and his air bags went off. *tr

552(b)(6). *tr

In the morning, i drove this mitsubishi eclipse 2005 to work(35 miles away from home), it was ok. After work, i drove back to my house, entered our garage, i got off the car, i saw a small fire on the right front lighting place, then i quickly backed my car out of the garage, the fire was getting bigger and bigger, my wife and i use a lot of water to put the fire out... This fire burned out the front light, bulb, some wire, and small piece of right front bumper... Then i tried this car again, i could drive it, but it has no turning signal. I drove this car to 2 different car shops, one is a local car shop, they worked on my car for 1 month, but they could not fix it. Then i drove this car to a mitsubishi dealer, they worked on my car for 2 months, they could not figure out the exact problem... Right now this car is still with no turning signal, and i can't drive it. *tr

Electrical cable for Fuel Pump caught fire. My daughter was able to park and exit the car safely before it combusted but it took 8 minutes for the car to basically explode. I think this is very dangerous for a family with kids or someone that wouldn't be as fast as my kid to get out of the car. We found out the same car/year has a recall but this was not issued to my specific vehicle. https://www.kbb.com/mitsubishi/eclipse/2004/recall/ I requested Mitsubishi Motors to check the car and give me compensation and they denied. We have a case number with them. The car showed the check engine light but we changed spark plug cables and alternator. It seemed fine otherwise.

Help!!!i the manufacture needs to be made aware of this hazard of a problem; if not already. With recall/replacement and/or reimburse good faith and loyal mitsubishi consumers. I won't began to explain the numerous brake/rotors & tires replaced/repaired within 5 years of purchased in september 2002. *tr
