My vehicle has had the "Ghost Touch" issue that has been reported on many Mazda vehicles and even had a recall for the 2014-2016 models since I got the car in 2018. Mazda has refused to do a recall or cover repairs even though it's still being reported as an issue on multiple different models of Mazda. This happens on a constant basis and just keeps getting worse. Here is the original recall notice from NHTSA: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10164268-0001.pdf

Infotainment system "touch" screen doesn't work and I experience "ghost" touching where it's as if someone is actually pressing the screen to toggle between the different functions, raise/lower the volume, etc., when my hands are no where near the screen. It's a very dangerous distraction when it happens while driving.

Touchscreen continues to change to different screens Ghost touch screen malfunction is know to dealer as prior year models have also had problems and recall was issued Dealer won’t cover cost of repair as it’s out of warranty This just started so I wouldn’t have known during warranty The dealer will repair for $750 which is not fair as it’s a known problem It is very distracting while driving and even if I turn the display off it will come back on
Feb 11, 2025
The vehicle – display has a ghosting issue with the screen keeps on changing without me, touching the controls. It will switch from one function to another function independently, and sometimes the screen goes blank. This display was replaced under recall in 2020 and I’m starting to have similar problems now in 2024 for the last 10 months. When the screen goes blank, this compose a safety hazard.

The infotainment system has a known problem called "Ghost Touch". The screen will randomly change from am to fm radio, make phone calls on its own, change screen during navigation. Mazda knows of the issue with this model. This should be a recall as it can severely distract a person while driving. Mazda says this is not under warranty even though I have extended warranty and the millage is only 32,000. Please make this a recall before a serious accident occurs.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The infotainment system in my 2017 Mazda CX-5 exhibits dangerous behavior consistent with known defects described in the Mazda Infotainment Class Action Settlement (Case No. 8:21-cv-01355). The infotainment system and touchscreen repeatedly activate critical functions on its own (“ghost touches”), sometimes going black, changing critical settings, disengaging phone calls as well as unexpectedly activating phone calls, and navigation features engage or freeze unpredictably. These malfunctions distract from safe vehicle operation, requiring driver attention to manage the malfunctioning display. The vehicle’s display is integrated with backup camera, audio, and Bluetooth controls, so these repeated malfunctions cause safety concerns while driving. Mazda and the dealership have refused to repair the defect under the Limited Warranty Extension established in the settlement, incorrectly claiming the issue is unrelated to the CMU (connectivity master unit). However, these symptoms are identical to those described in Mazda’s internal service bulletins (CSP13 and TSB 09-022/17) and covered by the settlement. I believe Mazda is failing to properly address a continuing safety-related defect that impacts infotainment stability and driver concentration. These issues have occurred for years and are continuing nearly every time I operate the vehicle.

I purchased this vehicle on the 10th of September. BY the 12th I I noticed the infotainment system was doing its own thing without me touching anything. The next day it did the same thing I E.changing stations on its own, volume going up or down etc...

Unknown The infotainment system started malfunctioning on its own
Sep 21, 2025
There is a known issue of "Ghost Touching" on the infotainment system on 2017-2020 Mazda's. The ghost touching causes the infotainment center to randomly self-select options on the screen, which is highly distracting. The following are experiences I've had while driving (sometimes going 70MPH on the interstate), where my infotainment center begins to make selections on it's own: Unpausing paused music Making random phone calls Opening text messages and selecting the reply button Flipping between screens continuously Ending phone calls This is extremely distracting and dangerous. Mazda is aware of this issue. I had my screen replaced in 2020, and replaced with another faulty screen that I now have to get replaced again.
Sep 19, 2024
This car has an issue with 'ghost touches' on the infotainment screen. We had it replaced under warranty in January 2020, and the same issue is happening again. Searches online show this is a widespread problem and Mazda wants to charge $1,000 to fix it this time. It is a distraction, turns music on/off volume up/down and can cause dangerous unexpected distractions.

The sunroof exploded. Exploded. Sound was shocking. I did not know what it was. The sound of the outside from the sunroof clued me in. The "shade" underneath the sunroof was closed so I did not see it happen.

On April 15th, 2019, Mazda made the public aware of Recall Campaign 3219D which involves a failure of the Front Body Control Module on Mazda 3 vehicles, which renders the front windshield wipers inoperable. That document indicates that the part number of replacement for the faulty module is KDY5-67-5XX. On July 10th, 2023, a Mazda dealership serviced a 2017 Mazda CX-5 as the windshield wipers were not functioning. They determined that the Front Body Control Module was faulty and causing the issue. With the new module, part number BAYS-67-5XX, the issue is resolved. The above part numbers are remarkably similar, especially given the added factor that the Front Body Control Module of this vehicle failed in the exact same way as is described in the recall. Mazda, in their filing of the Part 573 Safety Recall Report for campaign 3219D for the Mazda 3, indicated that there may still be an issue with the wiper motor's "condenser" (sic, capacitor) being undersized. Mazda refused to reimburse for these repairs when detailed and requested in writing.

One day last month, my front winsheild wipers were going very slowly when I turned them on the Auto setting (maybe 1/4 of normal speed, which is not correct). If I switched it to Lo or Hi they worked fine. A couple of days later the wipers always wiped in the very slow mode (1/4 of the speed of normal wipers), then after a 1/2 hour of driving they stopped altogether. It was raining quite hard at the time and I could not see through the winsheild, so I had to pull over anytime there was someone behind me and roll down the windows so I could see. I had my 11 year old son in the car with me and was terrified we could have been hurt or I could have run into someone or another vehicle because I could not see. I was close enough to limp along slowly and drove to the nearest Mazda dealer. They ended up replacing my vehicle's front BCM (body control module) which cost me $550 and that has fixed the issue. This is the same issue to the Mazda 3's that were recalled recently.

I was driving on the freeway, going about 65 mph at 7:30 am. I heard a loud BANG sound and my sunroof glass exploded into pieces. I had the inside cover closed so the glass did not get in the car. The sound was frightening, loud and caused me to pull to the side of the highway. The vehicle has been inspected by insurance representatives and I had used the sunroof the day before - it worked fine.
Sep 12, 2022
The underside frame/carriage of the vehicle developed corrosion in just the first three years. Granted it is surface corrosion, and not a perforation, still it is not something that a customer expects in the first 3-5 years of owning a vehicle. This indicates a low level of anti-corrosion treatment to the metallic parts of the undercarriage.
Feb 11, 2022
The vehicle has a poor quality of paint which chips quite easily upon the slightest impact by road debris. I purchased this SUV brand new in Soul Red color, newly launched for 2017, and soon discovered that the paint was chipping away in various spots exposing the clear coat. This started happening immediately after buying the car and continues to this day at 20,000 miles. Every time we would go on a highway trip (not off-roading), the paint would chip in new spots (hood, fenders etc.) upon the slightest impact with small, everyday highway debris. The dealer dismissed it and stated that this is “normal”, as if I was new to driving and maintaining cars. I have always kept the car clean, washed, and waxed so I was terribly disappointed when this started happening. It has reduced the resale value of the car without a doubt, and will certainly initiate body corrosion in places where the paint has chipped. I have been forced to use paint touch-up in different spots just to maintain the cosmetic look and stop corrosion.

PAINT ON SOUL RED CHIPPING AND FLAKING VERY EASILY.
Aug 26, 2020
RED PAINT CHIPS EXTREMELY EASILY. HAVE HAD THIS CAR FOR LESS THAN ONE YEAR AND DRIVEN LESS THAN 5,000 MILES BUT HAVE LOTS OF CHIPS ON THE HOOD, FENDERS, ROOF AND DOORS. GIVEN THIS PAINT IS AN EXTRA CHARGE I WOULD NOT EXPECT THIS. DROVE MY PREVIOUS VEHICLE FOR 10 YEARS AND DIDN'T HAVE AS MANY PAINT CHIPS AS I DO ON THIS AFTER ONLY A YEAR.

Rear differential failed around 97,000 miles. We were three months past our certified pre-owned warranty. Total cost to repair was around $4400 after a discount on parts and labor through our Costco membership. Contacted Mazda to see if they’d be willing to provide any assistance to cover the repair, they declined. Service advisor told us that it was a catastrophic failure that we did not cause. We purchased this car in 2020 and have always had it serviced at the dealership and at no point did they bring it up as it being an issue. The rear differential should not fail.
Oct 07, 2025
The contact owns a 2017 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, there was an abnormal sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the rear differential needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
Jul 15, 2025
Rear differential began to leak. Mechanics (3) looked at the part and discovered play in both right and left side axles leading into rear differential along with loud clanking noises inside the differential itself. Seal areas on both sides of unit had extensive play. Diagnosed with worn gears inside rear differential. Vehicle is only 8 years old (bought brand new) and has 74,110 miles. Complaint filed with Mazda claiming that gears and rear differential should not have failed given the mileage. Mazda has advised me that the car was out of warranty (5yrs/60k mileage) that the repairs were not covered. They wanted me to drive my car to a local Mazda dealer but I declined since driving it may/would have caused more damage to differential. Advised them to have their mechanic go to my local repair facility where part was replaced and pick up the differential for verification. Research online has indicated other owners has suffered identical issues. Have not heard anything back from Mazda. Total cost to replace $3,993.49
Jun 04, 2025
Rear differential failed at roughly 80,000 miles. Depending on failure, unexpected loss of traction or a locking up of the drivetrain could occur. We were lucky to catch it before then. Dealer confirmed issue with no clear cause. No warning lamps/messages/etc indicated that the part was failing. The only thing we noticed was increased highway noise, which could easily be ignored by someone who is not as aware of good/bad car noises.

Car was making popping noise, got it checked out at mechanic. Said rear differential had metal in the oil.

18-20 year same model and trim were recalled for fuel pump. Mine a 2017 has same symptoms died on highway going 75 almost life threatening. I purchased my Mazda CX5 in July of 2017. In August 2018 I was driving on an expressway and the car started balking and cut out completely on the side of the road. The engine light was on. I called roadside assistance which I had purchased at the time I bought the car. They had no one in the area. After sitting at the side of the road with the hood up the car started. I took the car to an Auto Zone. They put the car on their computer and did not find a problem other than the engine light coming on. Since that incident the car has had identical problems in city driving and expressway driving. There is absolutely no warning other than the sudden balking and stalling. Twice I have been driving on the expressway at 75 mph in New Mexico and have had to limp to the breakdown lane with semitrucks going by within a foot of my disabled vehicle. We never let the car go below a quarter of a tank of gas. Mazda had recalls on fuel pumps in 2018 and 19 CX5s. The description of the problems on the recalls are identical to what happens with my car. That doesn't seem to impress Mazda as the dealership dismisses my problem as not being under the companies recall specifications. I checked with the dealership each time I brought the car in and got the pat answer, 'not covered under the recall list". I finally took the car to Crippen Mazda where I purchased the car specifically to check the problem. They had the car for the day, did not find anything and although they said they road tested the car it hadn't gone 1 mile according to their records. $130 charge. The answer, "bring it in when the engine light is on". The engine light does not stay on. I called "Mazda customer service" and was told to take a picture when the car stalled. Take a picture of what? They told me they would send an email which never happened. I wrote a letter to Mazda headquarters and have not gotten a response. I now have a car which has intermittent problems and no help from Mazda.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Sudden loss of power (and speed) on interstate highway at ~65 mph. Fuel level was under 1/4 tank level. Weather was clear and approx. 60-70 deg F. Cruise control was on and vehicle working normally for hours on the road trip with cruise control on and functioning properly on the highway. Suddenly, the vehicle lost power, check engine light came on, and vehicle was running very sporadic. P0192 code thrown. Low fuel pressure which resulted in car suddenly going into reduced power mode. Sudden loss of high pressure pump would have resulted in complete loss of propulsion, which did not occur in this case - this indicates low pressure from the in-tank LP fuel pump. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Sudden and unexpected loss of power on the highway which could have resulted in rear end accident or loss of control while trying to get the vehicle off the highway. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes - if fuel tank level gets below 1/4 tank the problem will occur. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No - sudden loss of power and then engine light came on (constant, not flashing) and vehicle had sporadic power issues until we could get off the highway. Certified technician put scanner on car. Code was P0192 - low fuel rail pressure. Filled fuel tank to full, cleared code, and continued to drive car. Issue did not reoccur until fuel level fell below 1/4 level (approx.). 2017 Mazda CX5 is believed to have the same or similar low pressure fuel pump in tank, OEM = Denso, which is on recalled Mazda models from 2018 and newer. I believe older models of Mazda's with the same pumps should also be recalled!

There is currently a recall for faulty fuel pumps in Mazda CX-5 models 2018-2019. We currently own a 2017 Mazda CX-5 with less than 80,000 and had the same faulty part as the recalled years cause us to stall on a highway going 75 miles an hour. We were towed to a Mazda dealership who told us the running issues on our car were the following; Code P0171-fuel pump was damaged and sent debris into the high-pressure pump Code-P01792. The dealership knew we were aware of the recall in other model years and they informed us it was the same exact part in our car. So are big questions is why wasn't 2017 included in this warranty. I have reached out to Mazda and they are totally disregarding our claim and questions as to why 2017 wasn't included in the recall. A couple days before we stalled we experienced a engine hesitation which we believed was due to high winds and a roof rack while traveling. We did not have any lights on or warnings prior to being stalled. After we stalled the Alachua please department pushed our car to safety.

DRIVING ON EXPRESSWAY 65MPH WITH JUST UNDER A QUARTER TANK OF GAS AND ENGINE CUT OFF ON ITS OWN. MY SON WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BUT WAS VERY DANGEROUS AS IT WAS A VERY BUSY HIGHWAY. I FEEL THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS DEFECTIVE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. HAD VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY TOWED TO CLOSEST DEALER. I WAS CHARGED A DIAGNOSTIC FEE. AGAIN, I FEEL IT IS A WEAK DESIGN OF THE FUEL PUMP AND DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.

SERVICE BRAKES

I got my rear brakes replaced. Within a few days I noticed drag on each of the rear brakes would seize up at times causing excessive heat and a burning smell. When I took it into my local Mazda Service Center, I was told by the Service Manager and the Service Tech that this is a known issue with Mazda CX5s, that when the Mazda is not put into “maintenance mode” when replacing the rear brakes, it can cause damage to the parking brake motors and calipers. They said my vehicle was allegedly put into maintenance mode before brake service and that the issue can still happen even when the precautions are taken. Upon doing some brief online research I am finding that I am far from the first person to experience this unsafe defect. My safety and the safety of those on the road with me are at an extreme risk as my brakes could overheat and fail, causing a deadly accident. I believe this needs to be addressed by the manufacturer on all 2016/2017 CX5 models immediately as more and more are needing rear brake replacements, causing more and more risk on the roadways. Please hold Mazda accountable for this defect in their parking brake mechanism and require them to replace calipers and parking brake motors when performing rear brake replacements, and even better would be to recall all CX5 models to ensure a safe parking brake mechanism is on every vehicle Mazda sells. I was a huge fan of Mazda and planned to purchase more of their vehicles in my lifetime until this incident happened. I always service at authorized Mazda Service Centers to ensure I get expert level service and avoid mistakes or shortcuts being made.

The brake pads on this vehicle wear out prematurely, despite not using them aggressively. All four brake pads on the SUV wore out in less than the first 16,000 miles (first 3 years) and had to be replaced. The braking has also aways been “soft” and the car takes longer to come to a full-stop in the event urgent braking has to be done in traffic. The rotors have corroded prematurely too, despite keeping the car very clean and dry as a matter of habit. The dealer dismissed this issue stating the brakes were fine, as if this was the first car I was driving. I do not engage in hard stops, or perform sudden, jerky, brake applications and yet the brake pads wore out to almost nothing. All the other cars that I’ve owned historically had their brake pads last for 6-8 years of normal driving while this car wore them down in just 3 years. Premature brake pad wear can be a huge safety issue since an unsuspecting driver may not be aware of it and can result in an accident on the road from the vehicle not being able to come to a full stop in time.
Feb 11, 2022
Drivers side emergency brake drags just enough to prematurely wear inner brake pad down to the metal. 60,000 miles on car. All other pads are at 50% wear.

HELLO, THIS CAR WAS LEASED BACK IN OCT 2017 AS A BRAND NEW CAR FROM GARDEN CITY MAZDA (NY). SIX MONTHS AGO (JULY 2019), WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE SERVICE TO CHECK THE HUGE VIBRATIONS WHEN BRAKING. THEY FOUND A LEFT REAR BRAKE CALIPER WAS LEAKING AND FAILED CAUSED PLATE (ROTOR) AND PAD DAMAGE. CAR WAS ONLY DONE 5731 MILES. THEY HAVE REPLACED THE LEFT REAR ROTOR, PADS AND CALIPER. THEN RESURFACED (RR) ROTOR AND PADS. AFTER 6 MONTHS TODAY (JAN 3RD 2020), WE HAD TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE SERVICE BECAUSE OF THE VIBRATIONS RE-OCCURRING WHEN BRAKING AS IT WAS VERY CONCERNING. CAR IS DONE 9744 MILES TO DATE. AND THIS TIME IT WAS BOTH FRONT BRAKE PLATES (ROTORS) AND PAD ARE WORN OUT. THIS CAR IS ALMOST DAILY DRIVEN (4-5 DAYS A WEEK) AND HAVE LOW MILEAGE DUE TO THE LOW DISTANCE (+-10 MILES/DAY) IT WAS DRIVEN PER DAY. AND WE HAD TO CHANGE THE BRAKES TWICE WITHIN LESS THAN 10K MILES. MAZDA SERVICE AND MAZDA (MANUFACTURER) CLAIMS THIS IS DUE TO REGULAR WEAR AND TEAR AND CAR MUST BE SITTING THERE FOR A LONG. WHICH I DO NOT BELIEVE IS A VALID STATEMENT FROM MAZDA AS AN EXPERIENCE CAR OWNER AND A DRIVER. I HAD OTHER CARS THAT WERE SITTING ON MY DRIVE WAY LONGER THAN THIS CAR AND NEVER HAD THIS MANY BRAKE ISSUES. BRAKE FAILURES ARE VERY DANGEROUS AND PUT EVERYONE AT RISK. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE BRAKE COMPONENTS USED IN 2017 MAZDA CX5 IS NOT UP TO US CONSUMER SAFETY STANDARDS AND NOT SUITABLE FOR THE WEATHER CONDITIONS WHERE THE VEHICLES WERE SOLD. REALLY APPRECIATE IF YOU CAN INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE FURTHER AND I HOPE THAT WILL HELP SO MANY CONSUMERS USING THESE VEHICLES TODAY AND FUTURE. ROTORS BEGAN SHOWING SIGNS OF IRREGULAR WEARING AT 15K MILES, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLY WHEN BRAKING. THE DEALERSHIP INDICATED THAT THIS WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND INCLEMENT WEATHER. HOWEVER, THERE IS A VAST NUMBER OF REPORTS ONLINE WITH IDENTICAL ISSUES, OCCURRING AROUND 25K MILES, WHICH APPEAR TO BE RELATED TO DEFECTIVE BRAKE PADS OUT OF THE FACTORY.

This particular Mazda model has a ghost touch issue with the infotainment system. It will start selecting buttons on its own, which includes changing stations, randomly calling people, hanging up on people, dimming back up camera, changing different settings within the infotainment system. This is a major safety hazard as I have almost gotten in several accidents from this distraction. This has happened so many times that I cannot pinpoint one specific date. Mazda is aware of this because there is a service alert currently for this issue.

My car has been getting the P092 code with check engine light, it runs really rough, i have had many parts replaced at my expense when i know the model years 2018 and 2019 have been recalled, I am many others are having the same issues, is it going to take people dying on highways because their car just shuts off. My cat has been having the same issues reported in safety recall 19V497-6744. after googling around, I may have found an answer. Denso, who makes low pressure fuel pumps for a lot of different manufacturers, recalled several million of them a couple of years ago. They determined that there was a manufacturing defect that causes the pump impellers to crack and deform. Then they don't move enough gas to the front of the engine. I guess there is no pressure sensor between the tank and the high pressure fuel pump, so the problem isn't recognized by the car until the sensor in the fuel rail sees it. Several auto makers have issued recalls, including Mazda. But Mazda only went back as far as 2018. Toyota recalled cars as far back as 2013. There are now several lawsuits against various auto makers arguing that Denso knew about the problem in 2015, and the recalls should go further back in time. These two articles do a good job of covering the history of the problem:

Twice now, my 2017 Mazda CX-5 stalled on the highway with a check engine light popping up--both times was driving around 60-70mph for a couple of hours and had about a quarter tank of gas left. The first time, no code was found, but the second time, after a deeper diagnostic, the dealership found a P0192 code. After reading here and many other places online, based on the code and the car's behavior, it really sounds like the Denso low-pressure fuel pump is to blame; that's the source of the recall for 2018 and 2019 Mazda CX-5s experiencing this same issue [XXX] ). If the 2017 model also uses that fuel pump, why isn't it included in the recall? If this dangerous and erratic car behavior is due to a faulty part, it really should be covered by the recall. Shame on you, Mazda. Lives are at risk. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

MY VEHICLE WAS ON A CITY STREET BEHIND A CAR WHICH WAS AT A STOP SIGN. I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT MY CX5 DID NOT SLOW TO A STOP, BUT KEPT GOING AT A STEADY SPEED TOWARD THE CAR AHEAD. MY CAR SUDDENLY STOPPED ABOUT 5 FEET FROM THE CAR AHEAD. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL THE WHOLE TIME. THIS HAPPENED TWICE. ANOTHER TIME I WAS STOPPED BEHIND A CAR MAKING A LEFT TURN . WITH MY FOOT N THE BRAKE PEDAL MY VEHICLE MOVED ABOUT 3 OR 4 FEET AND STOPPED BEFORE HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT.

ACCORDING TO CONSUMER REPORTS (AUG. 2017, PAGE 58, LAST PARAGRAPH) THE MAZDA'S NEW CX-5'S FORWARD COLLISION WARNING WITH LOW-SPEED AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING STANDARD SHOULD BE APPLAUDED. THESE FEATURES MALFUNCTIONS IN LAS VEGAS DURING HOT WEATHER. MAZDA KNOWS ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND HAS NO FIX. WE BOUGHT A MAZDA CX-5 ON JUNE 9, 2017. WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY ON JULY 21, 2017 THE CAR QUIT WORKING PROPERLY AND WE HAD THREE WARNING MESSAGES COME UP ON THE DASHBOARD: 1.SMART CITY BRAKE SUPPORT MALFUNCTION 2.SMART BRAKE SYSTEM MALFUNCTION 3. FORWARD CAMERA MALFUNCTION. HAD I NOT BEEN PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION WHILE USING THE CRUISE CONTROL THE CAR MIGHT HAVE REAR-ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT AT 60 MPH. THE DEALER SERVICE STAFF I TALKED TO ON THE PHONE WHEN I GOT HOME SAID THAT MAZDA KNEW ABOUT THE FAILURES. MAZDA SAID THESE ERRORS ARE CAUSED BY EXCESSIVE HEAT AND MAZDA HAS HAD MANY COMPLAINTS IN MANY LOCATIONS. THERE IS PRESENTLY NO FIX. IT SEEMS TO WORK OK WHEN THE WEATHER IS COOLER. THESE ARE SAFETY FEATURES WE PURCHASED AND THEY FAILED WHILE WE WERE DRIVING IN LAS VEGAS. THE TEMPERATURE WAS 104 AT THE TIME. NOT EXCESSIVE FOR LAS VEGAS NOR OTHER PARTS OF THE SOUTHWEST DESERT. I CURRENTLY HAVE PICTURES OF TWO OF THE WARNING MESSAGES THAT FLASHED ON THE DASHBOARD AND CAN BE SEEN AT HTTPS://PHOTOS.APP.GOO.GL/0MFDPF5WZVOUX2SP2. THIS SEEMS LIKE A MAJOR FLAW OF THE MAZDA CX-5 IF THEIR PREMIER PACKAGE SAFETY FEATURES FAILS TO WORK WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS AROUND 104. THE CAR SHOULD NOT BE RECOMMENDED, OR EVEN SOLD, WITH THESE FEATURES UNTIL MAZDA GETS THIS FIXED. MAYBE OTHER MAZDA MODELS HAVE THIS FLAW.

Dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree. Multiple warning lights all at once. This issue has been reported on multiple Mazda vehicle years. Took to Delker Auto repairs. Is electrical problem. Stated that so far nothing wrong with components. Will have to hunt for. Mazda has known electrical issues. In addition, your file upload will not let me upload picture even though it's in correct format. I can send separately.

The contact owns a 2017 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated that the navigation was system rebooting and not connecting with the satellite. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where the Firmware was updated. The vehicle was repaired, but another failure occurred. The contact stated that the navigation system was inoperable. There was a compass symbol being displayed. The mechanic informed the contact that the navigation sim card chip needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

The rear camera dose not always display on the LCD screen, likely due to the ghosting issue with the infotainment system which randomly cuts in and out. This poses a safety hazard when backing up. Despite repeated complaints from other owners as well regarding the LCD screen, Mazda will not cover cost of replacing the LCD screen. I had a 2014 Mazda 3 for which there was a recall for the same issue and they covered it. So I don't understand why they won't do it for this vehicle. Being able to see what is behind the vehicle when backing up is a safety concern. I provided date of most recent occurrence, but this has happened multiple times before.

While driving my driver airbag warning light started blinking. When I took it to the dealership to be inspected they said the sensor for the driver airbag is in the seat cushion and was not getting enough power for it to turn on, therefore if the light is blinking the airbag is disabled and I would need to replace the entire seat cushion to fix this issue. If the airbag is disabled then I could be seriously injured in the event of an accident when the airbag does not deploy.

TIRES
1 complaint
A low tire pressure indicator light warning /beep came on the display panel. Soon after, while driving on a busy street, the driver's side front tire suddenly went completely flat all the way to the rim, causing a safety issue. There was no nail or other foreign object in the tire, just very worn out tread. With only 28,346 miles, all four Yokohama Geolandar G 91A P225/65 R17 100H tires have worn tread with the two front tires the worst. I had the two front tires replaced with Advanta 225/65 R17 102H because I didn't want the same Yokohama Geolandar low quality tires. I didn't have at the time, and still don't have the funds to replace the two rear tires, even though the rear tires are losing pressure the same way, which I'm keeping watch on, as the indicator warning doesn't seem to alert me until it is at a critical level. I'm asking for a refund of the two front tires replaced and replacement of the two back tires.Thank-you

The contact owns a 2017 Mazda CX-5. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle jerked and stalled. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The dealer retrieved DTC code: P0192 with a faulty fuel pump. The contact added fuel, and the vehicle operated as designed. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

1 complaint
On February 14, 2023 around 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. (EST), I drove to the local WAWA. Upon entering the driveway of WAWA at a very low speed and depressing the brake the car failed to come to a complete stop. I pressed down on the brake as hard as I good, but the car did not come to a stop until hitting the security/safety bollard in front of the WAWA store. I did not get injured and no one else was injured. The front end of my car sustained over $4000 worth of damage. The insurance company repaired by car. I was asked by the insurance company what caused the front end damage. As I played the accident over and over in my head, I just could not see what I did wrong. My foot was on the brake. Also, I entered the entrance of WAWA at a very slow/low speed. After a few weeks I took the car to the Mazda dealer to let them know the car accelerates and engine revs. Also, the car jolts forward while decelerating from about 20mph to 10mph. The car dealer/repair shop could not replicate the problem. Was told to bring the car back in, if problem continues.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
1 complaint
While driving on the interstate (continuously for about 4 hours) the vehicle suddenly lost power and the engine stalled. Power steering and power brakes were impacted and the vehicle was difficult to get off the road safely. Once stopped, it would not restart over a 30 minute period. A tow truck was called and it was taken to the dealer. A couple hours later when the dealer checked it, the vehicle started normally and drove without issue. A P0192 code was stored in the ECU so the high pressure fuel pump was replaced even though they could not reproduce the problem. The vehicle has 63000 miles on it now, but a similar sequence happened at 15000 miles. In that situation while driving at a steady speed all power cut out and the engine abruptly downshifted to the point where the tires squealed. After pulling off the road and stopping/starting the vehicle it seemed to drive normally again. We were traveling at the time with no dealer nearby, but when we returned back home we took it to the dealer and they found the same code P0192 and ran various tests and decided to replace the high pressure fuel pump even though it was driving properly. In only 63000 miles this vehicle has twice failed dramatically and without warning in ways that could easily cause an accident or injury. I am lacking in confidence that the root cause has ever been identified.

My Mazda has a feature called SBS (Smart Brake Support). It is touted as a safety feature, as it will brake the car when it approaches an object without driver braking. It can be disabled by the driver via the navigation panel; however, it automatically engages again upon engine start up. On a few occasions, when approaching a vehicle, I have braked and release, upon seeing the vehicle ahead begin to move. On such occasions, my Mazda's SBS activated, screeching my car to a near stop, scaring me and the vehicle behind me nearly rear-ended me. This action scared me, which affects my ability to control the situation and conduct appropriate action. I have contacted Mazda to ask for a permanent deactivation of this dangerous feature. They have been unable/unwilling to assist. They have concern that if a different driver should drive my vehicle, it would be problematic. I explained that this is my vehicle and I fear their SBS feature will cause me to be rear-ended and seriously injured. I have requested that the Mazda Customer Service rep submit a safety complaint on this issue. An Internet search finds that there are other customers with the same safety concern on Mazda's SBS feature. It is time that this be addressed.

Blind spot monitoring system warning appears on dashboard of vehicle after driving for about 50-60 miles. This occurs only when I drive >50-60 miles in one trip without shutting off my vehicle. Speed does not matter. My sensors will not work until I turn off my car and turn it back on. This started as soon as I purchased my vehicle in July 2020. 1 previous owner (lease) before I purchased the vehicle. No prior accidents. Got the vehicle at ~30,000 miles. In January 2021, I drifted off the freeway and hit a tree going 35 mph during a snow storm. It was only myself (driver) and a passenger in the front seat at the time of the incident. Both were wearing seatbelts. The seat belts locked up, but airbags never deployed for myself or the adult passenger in the front seat. Driver sustained no injuries, but the passenger smashed their knee into the glove compartment and smacked their head on the window/seatbelt holder on the side of the interior wall. The passenger was asleep during the incident, which may have explained why they did not brace themselves. One minute we were on the freeway, then we hit a slippery spot, and within seconds we were head on with a tree. Drove away to avoid the possibility of any vehicles following my path and smashing into us. Car was still driveable somehow. Car was repaired after 3 weeks at Caliber Collision and looked great. Sensor issue persists still, but unrelated to accident. Mentioned it to Caliber Collision when vehicle was being repaired and they had a Mazda service person come out with a sensor machine and they could not find the issue.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
1 complaint
The Mazda SCBS (Smart City Brake Support) system malfunctioned in my vehicle. This system can inadvertently apply the brake if the system malfunction. It was told to me by the dealership that it was a known issue with the CX5s around this model year and I really think it should be a recall. Not having this safety-critical system working properly because of a manufacturer defect isn't a great thing to put on the traveling public. Not having this system could cause people to become complacent expecting the system to work properly and stop them from rear-ending another vehicle. The warning light randomly came on one day, and would also come on from time to time which the manufacturer states as "normal". I had the system inspected by Mazda and they told me "This is a common issue that we have seen frequently." I had to pay out of pocket $800 to get this safety-critical system repaired that really should be covered by the manufacturer due to a malfunction in their system.

The Adaptive Cruise Control system (collectively including the Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Smart city brake support etc.) on this SUV stops working abruptly and randomly while the car is in operation on the road. This is a major safety concern as it can crash into a leading vehicle in absence of adaptive cruise capabilities. The system generally resets or starts working again after a 5-10 minutes, but there is no rhyme or reason why it stopped working or when it would start again. It has happened in cloudy, harsh cold weather, and also on a bright, warm sunny day. This makes the ACC unreliable. The dealer could not reproduce the malfunction, as generally the car is stationary in the workshop or isn’t driven for a long enough time while testing.

THE CAR STALLED WHILE IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY WITH 56 MILES LEFT IN THE GAS TANK. THIS CAUSED A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION DUE TO THE FACT THAT I COULD NOT ACCELERATE AT ALL, AS THE TRAFFIC WAS SPEEDING PAST. I HAD TO COAST THROUGH TRAFFIC TO THE SAFETY OF THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. ONCE THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP, IT WOULDN'T RESTART AND IT SEEMED AS IF IT NEVER ACTUALLY STOPPED TRYING TO RESTART. I NOTICED A FEW THINGS DURING THIS SITUATION. 1. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON 2. ALL THE DASH BOARD LIGHTS APPEARED TO COME ON 3. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND HOLD BUTTON FOR CITY PARKING BRAKE WERE FLASHING AT THE CENTER COUNSEL 4. THE DASHBOARD WARNINGS ROTATED BETWEEN, CITY PARKING BRAKE, PARKING BRAKE, CRUISE SYSTEM DISABLED 5. THE BATTERY FINALLY DIED AFTER SEVERAL MINUTES OF THIS HAPPENING MY FAMILY AND I WERE BROUGHT TO SAFETY BY A STATE TROOPER AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A GAS STATION. WE FILLED THE GAS TANK, JUMPED THE CAR AND IT HAS NOT HAD THE ISSUE SINCE. UNFORTUNATELY THE REAR LIFT GATE HAS ONLY WORKED ONE TIME AFTER THE EVENT BUT I AM NOT SURE WHAT IS GOING ON THERE. I HAD THIS SAME ISSUE HAPPEN ONCE IN 2019, AND THE VEHICLE RESTARTED. I TOOK IT TO A MAZDA DEALER AND THEY SAID IT MAY HAVE BEEN BAD GASOLINE. THE VEHICLE ISSUE SEEMS TO MATCH A SIMILAR ISSUE MENTIONED IN RECALL 3719F.

WHILE DRIVING MY 2017 MAZDA CX-5, THE SMART CITY BRAKE SUPPORT (SCBS) INDICATOR ILLUMINATES ON THE DASH. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS, ON CLEAR, SUNNY DAYS AND IN RAIN AND/OR SNOW; ON CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS. THE RATE OF DRIVING SPEED VARIES FROM APPROX 10 TO 65 MPH. THE INDICATOR STAYS ON FOR ANYWHERE FROM 20 SECONDS OR UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED (UPWARDS OF 20 MINUTES). SERVICE TECHS AT LOCAL DEALER WERE ABLE TO PULL THE FAULT CODE FROM THE COMPUTER, BUT IT WAS GENERIC AND GAVE NO GUIDANCE. MAZDA INITIALLY ACKNOWLEDGED THIS WAS A PROBLEM AND REPLACED THE CAMERA THAT CONTROLS THE SYSTEM (MOUNTED INTERIOR OF CAR AT WINDSHIELD), BUT WHEN PROBLEM PERSISTED WITH THE NEW CAMERA, MAZDA SAID IT'S "NORMAL" FOR THE LAMP ILLUMINATION TO DISPLAY ON THE DASH UNDER VARIOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS AND REFERENCED SERVICE ALERT SA-052/17, WHICH DISCUSSES FOG, RAIN, EXHAUST GAS FROM VEHICLE IN FRONT, ETC. TRIGGERING THE SCBS. ACCORDING TO THIS SERVICE ALERT, A DIRTY WINDSHIELD WILL ALSO TRIGGER THE WARNING LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE NOT ONLY IS THE SCBS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY, WHEN THE LIGHT ILLUMINATES IT DISTRACTS FROM THE ACT OF DRIVING.
