Comparing transmissions across the whole market is useless, because manuals are fitted to different cars than automatics. So I matched them by engine displacement — same size engine, both gearboxes, EPA combined figures.

The automatic wins in four of five brackets
At 1.8 litres the gap is 5.5 mpg. At 2.5 litres it's 4.2. Only the 2.2-litre bracket goes the other way, and by a single mpg.
This is a complete reversal of how it worked for decades, when a manual was reliably 2–3 mpg better than the slushbox alternative.
What changed
Gear count. A manual has five or six ratios. A modern automatic has eight, nine or ten, or a CVT with no fixed ratios at all. More gears means the engine spends more time near its efficient range.
Torque converter lockup. The old inefficiency was slip in the fluid coupling. Modern converters lock mechanically in most conditions, so the loss largely disappeared.
The computer shifts better than you do. An automatic optimises for the EPA test cycle precisely and repeatably. A human driver, and the test's standardised manual shift points, cannot.
Manuals stopped getting development. At around 5% of the market — a figure we covered in manual cars are 5% of the market — there's no business case for optimising them. The automatic in a given model gets the engineering; the manual gets carried over.
The 2.2-litre exception
One bracket where the manual wins, by 1.2 mpg. That bracket is dominated by older vehicles and light commercial applications, where the automatics available were four- and five-speed units from an earlier generation.
Which reinforces the point rather than undermining it: the automatic advantage comes from recent gearbox technology, not from automatics as a concept.
So why buy a manual?
Not for fuel, and not for resale — manuals sell at a premium because they're scarce and enthusiasts want them, so you pay more up front.
The remaining arguments are real but personal: they're more engaging to drive, mechanically simpler in some respects, and cheaper to repair when the clutch eventually goes than an eight-speed automatic rebuild.
What you shouldn't do is choose one expecting to save fuel. On a 2.5-litre car the automatic saves 4.2 mpg, which at 12,000 miles a year is roughly $290 annually.
And check which one the car actually has. Transmission is missing from 30.2% of used listings, and since manuals command a premium, a blank field usually means automatic — but usually isn't always. A VIN check decodes the transmission the vehicle was built with, along with the engine, which matters because a single model year can carry ratings 18 mpg apart.

Why buy a manual then?
Driver engagement, mechanical simplicity, and a clutch replacement costing far less than rebuilding an eight-speed automatic. Fuel economy and purchase price are no longer among the reasons.
