What affects your car insurance cost

Our estimate covers the car and the state — the two biggest levers. Your exact quote also moves on:

The carTheft rate, repair cost, safety and power — exactly what our loss index measures.
State & ZIPLocal accident rates, repair costs and state law set the baseline premium.
Coverage levelLiability-only is cheapest; full coverage adds collision + comprehensive.
Driver profileAge, driving record, credit history and annual mileage.
DeductibleA higher deductible lowers the premium — you just pay more out of pocket on a claim.
DiscountsBundling, safe-driver, low-mileage and paperless discounts can cut 10–25%.

Coverage types in plain terms

LiabilityPays for the damage and injury you cause to others. Required in almost every state.
CollisionRepairs your own car after a crash — whoever is at fault.
ComprehensiveCovers theft, fire, weather, vandalism and animal strikes.
GapPays the difference if a financed car is totaled and you owe more than it's worth.
Uninsured motoristCovers you when an at-fault driver has no insurance, or too little to pay.
Medical / PIPPays medical bills for you and your passengers after a crash, regardless of fault.

How is this estimate calculated?
We combine each car's real HLDI insurance-loss index (how much it costs insurers versus an average car) with the NAIC average premium for your state. It's an estimate for a typical driver with full coverage — your exact rate depends on your age, record and coverage.

Methodology

Insurance-cost estimates computed by ForCar by combining HLDI/IIHS insurance-loss indices for 645 vehicle models (relative losses versus an average car, 100 = average) with NAIC state average premiums across 51 states (combined liability, collision and comprehensive, 2023). Estimates assume a typical driver with full coverage; individual quotes vary with age, driving record, credit, ZIP and coverage. Figures are for research and comparison, not a quote.
