The standard line is that SUVs drink fuel and sedans don't. It's why people apologise for wanting one. So I checked the EPA figures across our data, and the gap is smaller than the guilt suggests — but the real story is inside the SUV category, not between categories.
SUVs vs sedans: three miles per gallon
Averaged across 2019 and newer, SUVs return 22.6 mpg combined and passenger cars 25.5. Three miles per gallon. Meaningful over years, not the chasm people describe.
Where it gets interesting is the range within SUVs themselves — because that gap is enormous.
| SUV | Combined MPG | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Kia Niro | 53 | Hybrid |
| Toyota RAV4 | 43 | Hybrid |
| Kia Sportage | 43 | Hybrid |
| Nissan Rogue | 33 | Gas |
| Hyundai Kona | 32 | Gas |
| Toyota Corolla Cross | 32 | Gas |
The hybrid line is the real divide
Best gas SUV: 33 mpg. Best hybrid SUV: 53. That's a 60% difference — twenty times larger than the sedan-versus-SUV gap everyone argues about.
Put in money at 12,000 miles a year: the Rogue burns roughly 364 gallons, the Niro about 226. At four dollars a gallon that's $550 a year, every year, for the same errands.
Which reframes the question. Wanting an SUV isn't the expensive decision. Choosing a gas one over a hybrid is. And the used hybrid premium, as I found when comparing fuel types, is far smaller than people assume once you match age and mileage.
What I'd take from this
If you want the space, take the space — three mpg isn't worth reorganising your life around. But if you're choosing between two SUVs and one has a hybrid version, that's where the actual money sits.
Compare the specific years you're shopping on our SUV fuel economy rankings — the figures move between model years more than you'd expect. And check running costs as a whole: a thirsty SUV that's cheap to insure can work out even against an efficient one that isn't.
Frequently asked questions
