Paint colour is the one field on a listing that nobody treats as data. It sits below the mileage and above the description, and it gets skimmed.
Group it by state across 230,000 listings and it turns into a map of the weather.
| State | White | Black | Silver / grey |
|---|---|---|---|
| Idaho | 38.7% | 14.6% | 20.4% |
| Arizona | 38.0% | 13.0% | 22.4% |
| Nevada | 36.1% | 15.6% | 22.9% |
| Oklahoma | 35.7% | 17.6% | 20.9% |
| New Mexico | 34.5% | 17.4% | 22.5% |
| Texas | 33.6% | 17.5% | 22.8% |
| New York | 23.0% | 21.9% | 24.7% |
| Washington DC | 21.8% | 20.6% | 27.5% |
| Illinois | 21.4% | 21.3% | 27.4% |
| Wisconsin | 20.1% | 21.5% | 28.0% |
The reason is boring and physical
A dark car parked in Phoenix in July gets meaningfully hotter than a white one beside it. That is not a preference, it is reflectance, and anyone who has put a hand on a black roof in the desert has done the experiment.
So the sun states bought white when these cars were new, and a decade later the used market still shows it. Black moves the opposite way — 13.0% in Arizona against 21.9% in New York — and silver and grey drift north with it.
Note what the pattern is not. It does not track wealth, or urban against rural, or which brands sell where. Idaho and Arizona have very little else in common.
Now the part that looks like a price signal
Run average asking price by colour across the whole market and white comes out at $19,678 while brown sits at $11,185. That is a spread of nearly nine thousand dollars, and it gets repeated as advice: buy white, it holds value.
The problem is that white is also the colour of pickups and recent SUVs, and brown is the colour of nothing built since 2014. The comparison is measuring what kind of vehicle wears each colour.
So we narrowed it to four cars — Camry, Corolla, Accord, Civic — where the body is held constant and only the paint changes.
| Colour | Listings | Average price | Average odometer | Average age |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White | 2,437 | $14,364 | 101,960 | 9.7 yrs |
| Black | 2,066 | $13,779 | 105,579 | 9.6 yrs |
| Red | 930 | $11,838 | 120,171 | 11.8 yrs |
| Blue | 1,288 | $11,249 | 117,721 | 12.4 yrs |
| Silver | 2,400 | $10,984 | 120,069 | 13.2 yrs |
| Grey | 1,803 | $10,163 | 129,530 | 13.1 yrs |
The price gap survives — and so does the explanation for it. The white cars are 3.4 years younger with 27,570 fewer miles than the grey ones. That is the whole difference, wearing a coat of paint.
Colour is a clock, not a value
What the table actually records is a fashion cycle. Silver was the default new-car colour through the mid-2000s, so silver used cars are old. White took over in the 2010s and never left, so white used cars are young.
Read that way, colour tells you roughly when a car was built before you look at the year — which is mildly useful and completely different from the claim that painting a car white makes it worth more.
We reached the same conclusion from the other direction when we looked at whether colour affects resale value, and it is worth stating plainly: pick the colour you want to look at. The market will not reward or punish you for it.
What the market does respond to is history, and that is a different field entirely. A free VIN check covers the parts of a car that do move the price.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular used car colour?
White, at 26.8% of listings where colour is stated, followed by black at 16.7% and silver at 12.1%. But the national figure hides a wide regional split: white runs at 38.7% in Idaho and 38.0% in Arizona against 20.1% in Wisconsin.
Do white cars sell for more money?
They ask more, but not because they are white. Among Camrys, Corollas, Accords and Civics, white examples average $14,364 and grey ones $10,163 — while the white cars are 3.4 years younger with 27,570 fewer miles. Control for age and the colour premium largely disappears.
Why are there more white cars in hot states?
A white roof and body reflect more sunlight than a dark one, so the cabin heats up less when parked. In Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico that is a daily practical difference, and it shows in what buyers there chose when the cars were new.
Does car colour affect resale value?
Barely, once you compare like with like. What looks like a colour premium is mostly a fashion cycle: silver dominated new car sales in the mid-2000s, so silver used cars skew old, while white dominates recent years and skews young. The age difference does the work the colour appears to be doing.

State price averages get quoted as if they measure how expensive a state is. They don't. They measure what happens to be parked on the lots, and we can now show exactly how much of the gap that accounts for.
