Two inches gained inside, two cubic feet lost behind

A midsize car gained 2.3 cubic feet of passenger space over forty years and lost 2.2 of boot. A compact gained 2.1 and lost 1.6.

Over the same period those cars grew about four inches taller and four inches wider on the outside, and the average gained 336 kg.

So the exterior grew substantially, the cabin grew marginally, and the luggage space went backwards.

Where the volume went

Crash structure. Rear crumple zones, reinforced bulkheads and side-impact beams occupy space that used to be boot. This is the largest single reason and it bought something real.

Fuel tanks moved. Safety regulations pushed tanks forward, ahead of the rear axle, which eats into the boot floor.

Suspension takes more room. Multi-link rear setups ride better than the beam axles they replaced and intrude further into the load area.

Batteries and electronics. Hybrid packs, 12-volt batteries relocated for weight distribution, amplifiers and control modules all found homes under the boot floor.

Styling. The steeply raked rear screens and high beltlines of modern design cost usable height in the load bay, whatever the cubic figure says.

Sports cars took it worst

Two-seaters lost 30% of their boot volume — from 13.3 cubic feet in the 1980s to 9.3 in the 2020s — and their cabin shrank too, from 86.0 to 80.8. It's the only category where both numbers went down.

What to do about it

Measure, don't assume. A modern midsize saloon carries less than an equivalent from 1990. If the boot matters, check the published figure rather than trusting that newer means bigger.

The wagon is the answer nobody buys. It solves exactly this problem and is the cheapest body style on the used market at a $6,950 median — below sedans and $4,000 under SUVs.

Don't trust the class name. EPA classes are assigned by interior volume, which produces results like the Acura Integra counting as a large car.

Check the exact configuration. Boot volume varies within a model — hybrids lose space to the battery, and a spare wheel versus a repair kit changes the floor. A VIN check decodes what a specific car was built with.
