Boot capacity gets quoted as a single number, which quietly rewards a car for being enormous. A vehicle that occupies half a street and carries a lot is not efficient — it is just big.

The honest comparison divides cargo volume by the ground area the vehicle actually takes up.

Four of the top six are Volvo estates. That is not a coincidence — it is what happens when a manufacturer spends forty years treating the load area as the point of the car rather than what is left over after styling.

The shape that wins

The Odyssey leads because a minivan is the most honest shape available: a box, wheels pushed to the corners, roofline flat until it has to stop.

Every departure from that box costs volume. A sloping tailgate on an SUV looks better and removes the top rear corner of the load bay, which is precisely where a suitcase would have gone. A raked windscreen improves drag and eats the front of the cabin. Ground clearance raises the floor without raising the roof.

None of those are mistakes. They are trades, and the table measures what they cost.

The Ferrari is the instructive entry. At 4.92 by 1.98 metres it has a larger road footprint than most family SUVs — it will not fit in spaces they fit in — and it returns seven cubic feet.

Nobody buys a GTC4Lusso for the boot, which is exactly the point. The number is not a criticism; it is a measurement of what the car was optimised for instead.

The Scion iQ is the opposite kind of entry. It occupies almost no road at all, which is its whole purpose, and the four cubic feet are what is left after prioritising length.

What to do with the ratio

Use it when the constraint is space rather than money. A city garage, a narrow driveway, a parking space with a pillar — these set a hard limit on footprint, and within that limit you want the shape that returns the most.

On that basis an estate beats an SUV of the same length nearly every time, and a minivan beats both. The SUV wins on ground clearance, towing and seating height, none of which appear in this measurement.

Worth noting the sample: 186 models carry both a cargo figure and full exterior dimensions in our data, which is enough to rank but not enough to cover the whole market. A model missing from the table is missing a measurement rather than performing badly.
