Nothing else in the data moves like that. Turbocharging took thirty years to reach half the market. Hybrids are still under a fifth. Direct injection went from absent to dominant between two five-year windows.

The side effect that follows it onto the used market

Port injection had an accidental benefit: fuel sprayed across the back of the intake valves on every cycle, washing them. Direct injection removes that — fuel now bypasses the valves entirely.

What lands on them instead is oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation system, and it bakes into hard carbon deposits. The valves stop sealing properly and stop flowing air cleanly. Symptoms show up gradually somewhere after 60,000 to 100,000 miles: rough cold starts, misfires, a slow loss of power and economy that owners often blame on age.

The fix isn't an oil change. It's walnut blasting or chemical cleaning with the intake manifold removed — several hundred to well over a thousand dollars depending on the engine.

Why this matters specifically for used buyers

The affected cars are now exactly in the used sweet spot. Anything from 2012 onwards is overwhelmingly direct injected, which means the entire ten-to-fourteen-year-old segment — where market supply peaks — is in the mileage band where deposits matter.

A new-car buyer never encounters this. A first owner sells at 60,000 miles, right as it begins. The second owner inherits it.

What to check before buying

Ask whether the intake has ever been cleaned. On a car past 80,000 miles this is a legitimate service item, and a record of it done is worth real money.

Cold start is the tell. A rough or lumpy first thirty seconds from cold, smoothing out afterwards, is the classic symptom. Insist on starting the car cold rather than arriving to find it warmed up.

Some engines are dual injection. Toyota, and increasingly others, run both port and direct injectors precisely to solve this. Worth knowing which one you're looking at.
