Why it fails the way it does
A latch is a spring-loaded claw that grips a striker bolt on the door pillar, with a secondary catch behind it to hold the door if the first one releases. It is a mechanism that operates several thousand times a year, in the weather, at the point where the body flexes most.
Two failure paths dominate. Corrosion stiffens the mechanism so the claw does not travel fully home — the door looks shut and is resting rather than latched. Or the linkage between the handle and the latch stretches, so the release stays partially pulled and the claw never fully engages.
Both produce a door that is closed at rest and unlatched under load. The load arrives at a corner, or over a bump, or when a passenger leans on the trim.
The warning signs nobody acts on
There are signs. They are just too mild to feel like anything.
A door that needs a firmer slam than it used to. A door ajar light that flickers on a rough surface and goes out again. A handle that feels slack, or a latch that does not click crisply when you operate it by hand with the door open.
Each of those individually reads as an old car being an old car. Together they describe a mechanism approaching the point where it stops holding.
Regulators treat latches seriously
One number puts the category in context. Comparing complaint volume against recall counts, latches and locks sit at about 15 complaints per recall — among the lowest ratios of any component group.
By contrast, engines run at 87 complaints per recall. The difference is not about how often things break; it is about how readily a regulator treats a given failure as a defect rather than as wear.
A latch that opens on the motorway is unambiguously a defect. An engine that fails at 140,000 miles is arguable. So latch problems convert into recalls at nearly six times the rate.
What to do
On a car you own, the check takes ten seconds per door. Open the door, operate the latch by hand, and watch the claw rotate and click home. If it feels gritty, sticks, or does not return crisply, it wants lubricant at minimum and inspection if that does not fix it.
On a car you are buying, close each door normally and listen. A door that needs to be slammed harder than its neighbours is telling you something about that latch specifically.
