What actually stops working

The engine stopping is not the dangerous part. What goes with it is.

Power steering assistance disappears immediately on a hydraulic system, because the pump is driven by the engine. The car still steers — the rack is mechanically connected — but the effort required goes up several times, at the exact moment the driver needs to make a lane change.

The brake servo holds enough vacuum for roughly one full application. After that the pedal goes hard and stopping distance extends substantially, because the driver is now pushing against the master cylinder unassisted.

Neither system fails. Both simply stop helping, and the difference between assisted and unassisted is far larger than most drivers have ever experienced.

Why the crash rate looks low

2.2% of stalling complaints ended in a collision, which is lower than brakes at 7.4% and far below speed control at 16.6%.

That number understates the risk rather than describing it. Most stalls happen at low speed — at junctions, in slow traffic, pulling away — where the consequence is a stopped car and an irritated queue.

Ford has twice Chevrolet's complaint count and slightly fewer crashes. Volume follows fleet size — the brands with the most vehicles on the road collect the most complaints about everything.

The ratio is more informative than the total, and by that measure the table is fairly flat. Stalling is not a brand problem; it is a category problem.

What to do when it happens

Three things, in order, and none of them is intuitive.

Keep it in gear. The instinct is to shift to neutral, but a car still in gear has the wheels turning the engine, which makes a restart far more likely.

Brake early and hard. The one assisted application is worth using while you still have it, rather than discovering the pedal has gone solid halfway to a stop.

Do not turn the key past accessory. On older cars that engages the steering lock, and a car that will not steer is a considerably worse problem than a car that will not accelerate.

Before buying

Intermittent stalling is the hardest fault to find on a test drive, because it is intermittent by definition. What you can do is check whether the model has a pattern and whether the specific car has an open recall — stalling defects generate recalls at a reasonable rate, and the fix is free.
