I was checking something else in the EPA data and noticed the displacement column drifting downward year after year. Pulled it properly, and the trend is remarkably steady.

Half a litre gone, and six tenths of a cylinder. That second number is the interesting one — it is the V8s and V6s quietly turning into four-cylinders across the whole market.
Now put it beside the other trend in the same data: cars got dramatically heavier over the same period. The Civic gained 78% of its body weight. The F-150 gained 2,588 pounds. Smaller engines, heavier cars, and the performance figures went up the whole time. Something had to make up the difference.
What made up the difference
Forced induction, mostly. A turbocharged 2.0-litre four now makes what a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre six made twenty years ago, and does it while passing a fuel-economy test that a big engine cannot. That is the entire logic of downsizing: the test measures the engine at light load, where a small engine sips, and the turbo only shows up when you ask for it.
Direct injection came along with it, then variable valve timing, cylinder deactivation, eight, nine and ten-speed automatics, and stop-start. Each one is a legitimate efficiency gain. Each one is also a part that did not exist to fail in 1995.
Why this matters when buying used
This is the practical half, and it is genuinely different from how used cars behaved a generation ago.
A modern small engine works harder for the same job. A 3.5-litre V6 hauling a two-ton SUV loafs. A turbo 2.0 doing the same work runs hotter, at higher cylinder pressures, more of the time. Done well, it lasts. Done cheaply, or maintained lazily, it does not — and the failures are expensive because turbochargers, high-pressure fuel pumps and injectors are not cheap parts.
Oil changes stopped being optional. Turbo bearings are fed and cooled by engine oil, and a neglected oil change kills a turbo long before it kills a naturally aspirated engine. On a used turbo car, documented oil history is worth more than 20,000 fewer miles on the odometer. I would take a 120,000-mile car with a folder of receipts over an 80,000-mile one with none, every time.
Direct injection has a known housekeeping problem. Because fuel is sprayed straight into the cylinder rather than over the intake valves, those valves never get washed, and carbon builds up. On some engines it needs a walnut-blast cleaning around 60,000–100,000 miles. That is a real, budgetable service item that simply did not exist on a port-injected engine, and plenty of sellers have never heard of it.
How to check the specific car
Engine choice within one model matters more now than it used to. The same body might come with a naturally aspirated four, a turbo four and a V6, and those three cars have entirely different failure profiles and running costs. The badge on the back tells you almost nothing.
