A large 4WD SUV beats a minivan by 22 mpg
That's the line that gives the game away. Standard SUV 4WD averages 44.0 mpg. Minivan 2WD averages 21.9. A big four-wheel-drive vehicle returning double the economy of a front-drive people carrier is not a physics result.
It's a categorisation result. The standard SUV class is where large electrified vehicles get filed, and their ratings — often in the triple digits on the EPA's equivalent scale — pull the class average far above what any petrol SUV manages.
The minivan class, by contrast, contains almost no electrified models. Twenty vehicles, nearly all conventional petrol, so the average reflects what they actually return.
Small SUVs top the table for the same reason
52.6 mpg across 23 models. This is where compact hybrid and plug-in crossovers land, and it's the single most electrified class in the EPA's system.
Which is worth knowing if you're using class averages to shop. "Small SUVs are efficient" is true of the class and untrue of most individual cars in it — a conventional petrol compact crossover returns somewhere in the high twenties, not fifty.
What the classes are actually good for
Comparing within a class, not between them. Two small SUVs in the same class with different ratings are genuinely comparable. A small SUV against a minivan is comparing categorisation systems.
Understanding a sticker. The class name on a window sticker tells you which vehicles a car was ranked against, which is the context for any percentile claim printed next to it.
Nothing about individual cars. Within a single model year the spread across powertrain options can exceed 18 mpg, as we found in two 2025 Civics can differ by 18 mpg. A class average is several layers of abstraction above the car you'd actually buy.
How to get a number you can use
Look up the specific configuration, not the class or even the model. Engine, drivetrain and transmission each produce separate ratings.
Split city and highway. The gap between them widens sharply with engine size — 20% on a three-cylinder against 56% on a twelve — which we covered in a V12 loses 56% of its economy in traffic.
Confirm what the car is. The engine and drivetrain a vehicle was built with are encoded in its VIN, and a VIN check decodes them — which matters because listings state the wrong powertrain routinely and drivetrain is missing from 47% of them entirely.
