Charging headlines are all about the fast stuff: ten minutes for two hundred miles, 800-volt architecture, a new record at some roadside plaza. Those numbers do get better every year.
But almost nobody lives at a fast charger. Most electric miles start on a 240-volt outlet in a garage, and that's the number I went looking for in the EPA data.

This isn't stagnation, it's arithmetic
A home 240-volt circuit delivers roughly 7 to 11 kW. That's a hard ceiling set by your house wiring, not by the car. Fast-charging breakthroughs happen at 150 to 350 kW, which is a different world entirely — and one your garage will never reach.
So the only lever left is battery size, and it's pulling the wrong way. Batteries have grown to hold range steady while cars got heavier and more powerful. A bigger pack on the same wall socket takes longer to fill. That's the whole story of the table above: range flat at ~315 miles, charging time flat at ~10 hours, both by design.
Why ten hours is fine — until it isn't
For daily driving this genuinely doesn't matter. Plug in at seven in the evening, wake up to a full battery, drive your 40 miles and repeat. The charger works while you sleep, which is time you weren't using anyway. Nobody stands and watches it.
It matters in three specific situations, and they're worth knowing before you buy:
No home charging. If you park on the street or in a shared lot, that ten-hour figure becomes someone else's charger and someone else's schedule. This is the single biggest predictor of whether owning an EV feels effortless or annoying — bigger than range, bigger than brand.
Back-to-back long days. Drive 250 miles, get home at nine, need another 250 tomorrow morning. Ten hours means you're leaving at seven with a full pack — just. Two such days in a row and the maths stops working.
Standard household socket. Everything above assumes a proper 240-volt installation. On a normal 120-volt outlet the same car takes three to four days. That's not a typo, and it's why the wall box is part of the purchase price, not an accessory.
What to check when buying
Ask for the charging figure the way the EPA states it — hours at 240 volts — not the marketing number from a fast charger. And confirm the car's onboard charger rating: an 11 kW unit fills roughly half again as fast as a 7 kW one on the same wall box, and that difference is invisible on the spec sheet unless you go looking.
On a used EV, add battery health to the list. A pack at 88% takes less time to fill but gives you less when it's done, and neither number appears on the original sticker. Worth pairing with the free VIN check — battery and charging-system recalls are among the most serious campaigns issued on electric cars, and the letters rarely follow the car to its second owner.
And keep the range side in proportion: average range stopped climbing in 2019, and the highway figure runs 11% below the city one. Ten hours to fill a battery you'll mostly use in town is a fair trade. Ten hours between two long motorway days is a different conversation.
