It is the most repeated rule in car buying. Never buy the first model year — wait twelve months, let somebody else find the problems, buy the fixed version.
We hold recall and complaint histories broken out by model year for hundreds of models, which makes the rule testable rather than a matter of opinion.

If the rule were right, the first row would show a large positive number. It shows a small negative one.
The stronger test is the last two rows
Averages can hide a skew, so we also counted models individually: for each one, is the first year worse than that model's own average?
On recalls, the first year is worse for 37% of models — meaning for 63% it is better than typical. On complaints it is 47%, which is as close to a coin flip as this kind of measurement gets.
A rule that is right slightly less than half the time is not a rule. It is a guess with a reputation.
Why the data leans the other way
There is a mechanical reason the first year should look worse than it does, and it makes the result stronger rather than weaker.
Recalls accumulate over time. A model year from 2015 has had a decade to collect campaigns; a model year from 2024 has had two years. Since the first year of any model is by definition its oldest year, it has had the longest exposure — and it still comes out marginally cleaner.
Adjust for that and the case against the first year gets weaker still.
Where the myth came from
Two things, and both were once true.
Development used to be shorter. Before extensive computer simulation and long pre-production validation runs, the first cars off a new line genuinely were the test fleet, and buyers found what the factory had not.
And first-year problems are memorable. A defect on a brand-new model is a story; the same defect appearing in year four is a service bulletin nobody writes about. The rule survives on recall bias in the human sense rather than the automotive one.
What actually predicts a bad year
We looked for a pattern in where the worst year falls in a model's life, and there isn't much of one. The peak recall year sits at the 45% mark on average — the middle of the run — and lands in the first quarter for only 30% of models.
Distribution across the four quarters of a model's life: 30%, 23%, 29%, 18%. Close enough to flat that position tells you almost nothing.
What does predict trouble is the specific year's own record. Some model years genuinely are bad, and they are identifiable by looking at them rather than by counting from the start of production.
One honest limit
This measures the first year a nameplate appears, which is usually a new platform. It does not separately identify a mid-cycle redesign carried out under an existing name.
So if the real version of the rule is "avoid the first year of a major re-engineering", our data cannot confirm or refute it — those years are counted as ordinary ones. What we can say is that the version everybody repeats, about new models, does not hold.
The replacement for the rule is simpler and it works on any year: check the specific vehicle. A free VIN check returns the open campaigns for that exact car, which is the thing the ordinal position was always a poor proxy for.
