The letter in the code explains it
Look at the campaign numbers. Five of those six contain an E, and one contains a V. That letter is the whole story.
A V campaign is a vehicle recall — the manufacturer identified a fault in something it designed or built, and the recall covers its own cars.
An E campaign is an equipment recall. The defect is in a component, and the recall follows that component into every vehicle it was fitted to, regardless of badge. The carmakers involved did nothing except buy the same part from the same supplier.
That is why the widest campaigns are almost all E codes, and why the models inside them look like a random selection of the market rather than one company's range.
Which parts are bought in
Modern cars are assembled from components made by a small number of specialist suppliers. Airbag inflators, seat belt pretensioners, tyres, brake boosters, electronic control modules — these are rarely made by the company whose badge is on the bonnet.
Concentration is high in each category. When a handful of firms supply the entire industry, a single bad production run reaches an enormous number of vehicles, and the recall has to reach just as far.
The airbag inflator recalls of the last two decades are the extreme example, eventually covering tens of millions of vehicles across nineteen manufacturers — a single supplier's chemistry decision propagating through the whole market.
Breadth is not severity
The tempting inference is that a recall touching seventy models must be catastrophic and a single-model recall must be minor. Neither follows.
Breadth measures how widely the part was sold. A supplier's labelling error can reach seventy models and require nothing more than a new sticker. A single manufacturer's fuel line routing problem can reach one model and cause fires.
The severity lives in the consequence text, not in the model count. We looked at how that text is written across all 43,827 records and found very little that could fairly be called minor — but the reach of a campaign is not what tells you which kind you are looking at.
Why this matters when buying used
One practical consequence. Because equipment recalls follow the part rather than the brand, you cannot reason about them from the manufacturer's reputation.
A brand with an excellent record for its own engineering carries exactly the same supplier recalls as everybody else who bought that component. Checking the make is not a substitute for checking the vehicle.
And these campaigns are frequently the ones that go unrepaired longest, because owners do not associate a component recall with a car they consider reliable. A free VIN check returns what is open on a specific vehicle, whoever made the part.
