Why a car stays in production unchanged
The niche is too small to justify a redesign. A full new generation costs hundreds of millions. On a car selling in low thousands annually, that never pays back — so it gets facelifts and updated equipment instead.
It has no direct competition. Nothing forced the GT-R to change, because nothing else occupied its position at its price.
The platform is amortised. The Challenger, 300 and Durango shared an architecture whose development costs were long since paid off. Every additional year was profit.
The buyer wants exactly this car. Redesigning a Challenger into something modern risks losing the reason people bought it.
What it means on the used market
Parts availability is excellent. Fifteen years of one design means enormous parts commonality, deep aftermarket support and mechanics who know the car thoroughly.
Depreciation is unusually flat. Without a dramatically newer version to make the old one look dated, a 2015 example doesn't get orphaned by a 2018 redesign.
Later years are meaningfully better. Fifteen years of running changes means a late example has fixes the early ones didn't. On a long generation, the model year matters more than usual — and we found a single bad year can hold half a model's complaints.
Safety equipment lags. This is the real catch. A car designed in 2008 and sold in 2022 was engineered before modern driver assistance existed, and often before current crash standards. Its structure is fifteen years old regardless of how new the registration is.
What to check
On a long-running model, identify which running changes apply to the specific car — engine revisions, transmission updates and equipment changes happen mid-generation without fanfare.
