One recipe, eighteen badges

The 2.0 turbo with an eight-speed automatic runs from 2011 to 2027 across 18 brands — mainstream and premium alike. Different tuning, different badges, fundamentally the same architecture.

Its predecessor as the universal default was the 2.0-litre with a five-speed manual: 709 records across 31 brands, spanning 1984 to 2023. Broader reach, and now effectively extinct.

Why everyone converged

Emissions certification costs money per powertrain, and a single boosted four covers the output range that used to need two engines. That's the same pressure that made engine choice per model collapse from 1.27 to 1.06 in five years.

Eight speeds became standard because the supplier base standardised on it — ZF's transmission in particular appears across an enormous range of manufacturers who don't otherwise share anything.

The result is real convergence. Two cars from different segments and price brackets can have near-identical mechanical packages, which is worth knowing before paying for one.

The most common single configuration in the entire database isn't an engine at all. It's the one-speed reduction gear of an electric car — 1,367 records across 42 brands, more manufacturers than any combustion setup ever reached.

Its share of the model range went from 1.6% in 2015 to 5.8% in 2022 to 26.1% in 2026. After decades of adding ratios — and we found the benefit stopped after seven — the fastest-growing transmission has one.

What to take from it as a buyer

Cross-shop on the mechanical package, not the badge. If two cars share the 2.0T and eight-speed, the difference is trim, chassis tuning and warranty rather than fundamentals.

Parts and knowledge follow volume. A common configuration means more independent shops that know it and more remanufactured parts available — a genuine ownership advantage.

The turbo comes with conditions. Nearly 70% of turbo engines require premium fuel, and at matched displacement they're less economical than atmospheric engines, not more.
