Overheating occupies a strange position in most drivers' heads. It registers as serious but survivable — pull over, let it cool down, add water, carry on.

Why heat turns into fire

The engine itself does not ignite. What ignites is what leaks onto it.

An exhaust manifold runs several hundred degrees above the autoignition point of engine oil. Under normal conditions nothing reaches it. During an overheating event, three things change: coolant pressure spikes and finds the weakest hose, plastic components in the cooling system soften and fail, and oil temperature climbs past the point where a leaking seal becomes a spray rather than a seep.

A cracked hose spraying coolant across a manifold produces steam and a stall. A leaking oil line doing the same produces a fire, and the engine bay is full of things that burn once something starts.

The gauge is the cheapest warning on the car

Almost every other serious failure gives you no notice. The temperature gauge gives you minutes, in advance, on an instrument you can see without looking away from the road.

What has changed is that many modern cars no longer have one. A dashboard with a blue-then-nothing indicator tells you the engine is warm and then tells you it is critical, with no intermediate reading — and by the time a warning light comes on, the useful part of the window has passed.

On a car with a real gauge, learning where the needle normally sits is worth doing deliberately. Any departure from that position is information, and it arrives long before a light would.

What to do when it climbs

Turn the heater to maximum immediately, fan on full. The heater core is a second radiator, and using it moves real heat out of the engine. It is deeply unpleasant in July and it buys genuine time.

Then stop, before the needle reaches the red rather than after. Every additional minute of running without circulating coolant is compounding damage — aluminium heads distort quickly, and a distorted head means a gasket at minimum.

Do not open the expansion tank while it is hot. The coolant in there is well above 100°C and held liquid only by pressure; releasing the cap flashes it to steam in your face.
