What the turbo is doing
The turbine spins at more than 100,000 rpm. The shaft is supported on a film of oil a few microns thick, and the exhaust side sits directly in the gas stream at temperatures high enough to glow.
Every one of those conditions depends on oil. Not merely on there being oil — on the oil being the right grade, changed on schedule, and given a moment to keep circulating after hard running.
Switch off immediately after a motorway exit and the turbine is still spinning with no oil flow, in a housing at several hundred degrees. The oil left in the bearing cooks, leaves carbon deposits, and the deposits restrict the passage a little more each time.
Why it matters more than it used to
The engineering is sound. Turbochargers on trucks run for hundreds of thousands of miles. What changed is who owns them.
A performance car buyer in 2005 knew the oil grade mattered and let the engine idle briefly before shutting down. A family hatchback buyer in 2020 has a turbo and no reason to know it — nothing in the ownership experience distinguishes the car from a naturally aspirated one until the bill arrives.
Meanwhile service intervals stretched. Fifteen or twenty thousand miles between oil changes is normal now, on engines where the oil is doing more work than it ever did.
The engine tolerates it. The turbo does not.
Checking one before you buy
Three things, and the first is the most useful.
Start it cold and listen. A healthy turbo produces a smooth whistle that rises with revs. A grinding note, or a whine that wavers, means the bearing has play.
Accelerate hard and have somebody watch the exhaust. Blue smoke means oil is passing the seals into the intake or exhaust, which is the failure in progress rather than a warning of one.
Then read the service history for intervals and oil grade. On a turbocharged engine that record is worth more than the odometer reading — a 90,000-mile car serviced properly is in better shape than a 50,000-mile one that went twenty thousand miles between changes.
