Every complaint on file carries the date the incident happened, separately from the date somebody reported it. Sorted by month across 976,000 records, those dates are not evenly distributed.

The gap between July and April is 25%. Nothing about the number of cars on the road changes by a quarter between spring and midsummer.
Two peaks, two mechanisms
The summer peak is the larger one and it has the simpler explanation: heat.
A cooling system that is 80% healthy works perfectly in March and fails in a July traffic jam. Battery electrolyte evaporates faster at high temperatures, which is why a battery killed by summer heat frequently does not reveal itself until the first cold morning. Tyre pressures rise, rubber degrades faster, and air conditioning — a system that does nothing for eight months — runs continuously.
Summer also concentrates long journeys. A marginal component that survives a twenty-minute commute gets four hours of continuous load on a holiday drive, which is a completely different test.
The January peak is smaller and mechanically opposite. Cold thickens oil and transmission fluid, batteries lose cranking capacity exactly when the engine needs more of it, and plastic and rubber turn brittle. Winter failures cluster around starting and cracking rather than overheating.
The trough is the useful part
April sits 12% below average, and February and November are close behind. These are the months when the ambient conditions are mildest and the cumulative load lowest.
Which makes them the cheap time to find a problem. A cooling system inspection in April costs the same as one in July and finds the same weak hose — the difference is whether you find it in a workshop or on a hard shoulder with the temperature gauge climbing.
The two checks that pay for themselves are seasonal in the obvious way. Cooling system and tyres before summer; battery and fluids before winter. Both are cheap, both are boring, and both target the exact failure modes the peaks are made of.
What this does not explain
One honest caveat. These are incident dates from complaint records, and complaints are not a random sample of all failures — they skew toward faults people consider defects rather than wear.
So the shape describes when reportable problems happen, which is not identical to when all breakdowns happen. A dead battery in January often gets replaced without anyone filing anything.
What survives that caveat is the direction. Both peaks sit at temperature extremes, both troughs sit at mild months, and the mechanisms are physical enough that the pattern would be surprising if it were absent.
Buying in the shoulder season
There is a second-order effect worth knowing if you are shopping. A car that has just come through July with its cooling system intact has passed a real test, and one bought in April has not been tested yet by anything.
That is an argument for reading the maintenance record rather than the season. A free VIN check shows the service and title history on file for a specific vehicle, which is the part the calendar cannot tell you.
