The first character of a VIN is the country of final assembly. 1, 4 and 5 are the United States. 2 is Canada, 3 Mexico, J Japan, K South Korea, W Germany. It is the least ambiguous fact on the entire car — it is not marketing, it is where the thing was screwed together.
Each manufacturer registers World Manufacturer Identifier codes, one per plant and vehicle type. I went through the registry brand by brand and counted where those codes live.

Kia — a Korean company — has 44% of its codes registered to American plants, against Ford's 47%. Honda's American codes outnumber its Japanese ones. Meanwhile 20% of Ford's codes are Canadian and 17% Mexican.
One honest caveat before anyone quotes this at a barbecue: these are code registrations, not production volumes. A code covers a plant and vehicle type, so it tells you where a brand builds, not how many cars come out of each door. It is a map of manufacturing footprint, not a sales chart.
The badge stopped meaning a country decades ago
Honda has been building cars in Ohio since 1982. Toyota has plants in Kentucky, Indiana, Texas and Mississippi. Kia builds in Georgia, Hyundai in Alabama, BMW in South Carolina — where it runs one of the largest vehicle exporters in the United States, shipping German-badged SUVs to the rest of the world.
Meanwhile American brands moved substantial production to Mexico and Canada. The result is a market where nationality of badge and nationality of assembly have almost nothing to do with each other, and haven't for a generation.
How to check your own car in ten seconds
Look at the first character of the VIN on your dashboard or door jamb:
1, 4, 5 — United States. 2 — Canada. 3 — Mexico. J — Japan. K — South Korea. W — Germany. S — United Kingdom. Z — Italy. Y — Sweden or Finland.
That is assembly location only. A car assembled in Kentucky can be full of imported parts, and one assembled in Japan can carry an American-built engine. Why it matters beyond bragging rights
Assembly plant is genuinely useful information on a used car. Different plants building the same model can have different build-quality reputations and different recall campaigns — recalls are frequently issued for vehicles built at a specific plant between specific dates, which is exactly the information encoded in your VIN.
