Corrosion used to be what finished cars off. Wheel arches bubbled, sills went, and a ten-year-old car in a salted state was structurally finished regardless of how the engine ran.

Less rust, reported sooner
The reporting interval moved too, from 8.8 years down to 3.3. Less corrosion, reported sooner — which rules out the obvious reading that modern cars rot faster.
What changed is what counts as acceptable. On a 2002 car, surface rust on the arches at eight years was unremarkable — the thing cars did. Nobody filed a federal complaint about the expected behaviour of a middle-aged vehicle.
On a 2021 car, visible corrosion at three years reads as something being wrong. So it gets reported, and the average interval collapses.
What actually improved
The engineering changes were real and they happened in a specific order.
Galvanised steel moved from luxury cars to the mass market through the 1990s. Cavity wax injection into box sections followed, addressing the places that rot from the inside where nobody looks. Better sealing at seams and around glass removed the water traps that started most of it.
The result is that ordinary bodywork corrosion — the wheel arch bubbling that defined the 1980s — largely stopped being the failure mode. What remains concentrates in places where water still collects and salt still reaches.
Where it still happens
Modern corrosion complaints cluster in structural rather than cosmetic locations, which makes them more serious rather than less.
Subframe and suspension mounting points. Brake line runs along the underbody. Inner sills where the drain holes have blocked. Boot floors under the spare wheel well, where a failed seal lets water sit for years.
None of these are visible from the pavement, and all of them are where a structural inspection actually fails a car.
Checking a used one
Look where water rests rather than where it hits. Inner sills, the inside lip of the rear arches, the boot floor with the mat lifted, and the seams around suspension mounts.
Distinguish surface rust from structure. A subframe with brown surface oxidation is normal on any car from a salted state and means very little. Flaking that comes away in layers, or perforation anywhere near a mounting point, is a different category and an expensive one.
Geography matters more than age here — a fifteen-year-old car from a dry state is frequently sounder underneath than a six-year-old one from a salted one. Where a car has lived is part of its history, and a free VIN check is what shows the states it has been registered in.
