We can compare how often a brand gets checked against how often it's actually for sale. The gap doesn't track risk at all — it tracks how much the mistake would cost.

It's the opposite of where the problems are

Chrysler averages 7.01 complaints per listing and gets checked at half the market rate. Porsche averages 0.85 complaints per listing and gets checked three times more than it appears.

If checking tracked risk, those numbers would be reversed.

What it actually tracks is the size of the mistake

A Mercedes buyer is spending more, on a car whose repairs are notoriously expensive, often without a warranty. Getting it wrong costs thousands. That justifies five minutes of research, and the behaviour follows.

A Chrysler buyer is spending less on a car they assume they understand. The downside of a mistake feels smaller — so the check feels optional, even though the complaint record says the odds of a problem are eight times higher.

At the model level the same pattern: Mercedes C-Class 6.49x, BMW X7 5.92x, Tesla Model Y 5.52x, Ford Bronco 4.99x. Aspirational and expensive, all of them.

The same inversion appears by age

Cars from 2020 onwards draw 50.5% of all lookups while making up 18.6% of listings — a rate of 2.71x. Ten-to-fifteen-year-old cars sit at 0.50x, checked half as often as they're sold.

Yet that older band is exactly where odometer rollbacks, unrepaired recalls and rebuilt titles live. A three-year-old car has a short, clean history by definition. We measured the same thing from another angle in people run 217,000 checks on cars built since 2020.

One more detail worth knowing

Of 30,657 VINs people have checked, only 213 also appear in our listing data. People overwhelmingly check cars they're already standing in front of — at a dealer, mid-negotiation — rather than cars they're browsing.

That's late in the process. A branded title discovered at the dealership has already cost you the trip and put you in a position where walking away feels harder than it should.

What to take from it

Check by risk, not by price. The cheap, familiar, high-complaint car deserves the check more than the expensive one, not less.

Check older cars especially. The 10–15 year band has the most history to hide and gets the least scrutiny.

Check before you travel, not at the forecourt. A VIN check takes seconds and works from a listing photo of the windscreen plate.
