How to read a Coachmen Catalina VIN — every digit explained
Every Coachmen Catalina carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Coachmen and the country it was built in (real Coachmen codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Catalina.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- —1MW · 1TC · 1TE · 1TJ · 1TX
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Catalina, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

Fuel System, Gasoline:delivery:hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings
What's wrong. On certain class c mini-motor homes built on 2003 chevrolet chassis, the chassis fuel return line, which is tapped to supply fuel to the generator, has been found to have pressures that exceed the maximum allowed by the generator manufacturer.
Risk. As a result, if the generator is operated at the same time the chassis engine is running, excess fuel could be delivered to the generator, creating a potential for a generator stall and possible fuel spill. In the event of a fuel spill, a fire could occur.
Fix. Dealers will install an approved kit that draws the generator fuel supply directly from the fuel tank. Owner notification is began march 24, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact coachmen at 1-800-453-6064.

Equipment:recreational Vehicle/trailer
What's wrong. On certain motor homes, travel trailers, and fifth wheel trailers equipped with samsung microwave ovens, these units were produced with a defective panel. An electrical short can occur between circuit patterns on the membrane panel, especially overlapped by a "jumper" or jump wire. This may cause the oven to activate without pressing any key pads.
Risk. An electrical short can occur causing the oven to activate without pressing any key pads. This could result in excessive heat, smoke, or possibly a fire.
Fix. Samsung will notify customers and repair the panel free of charge. In the meantime, consumers should unplug their microwave, if possible. If the consumer is unable to unplug the microwave, they should leave the door ajar until the panel is replaced. Consumers should never use the microwave oven for storage or leave any towels, paper, cloth or other products in the microwave after use. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact samsung at 800-932-3837 or coachmen at 1-219-825-5821.

Tires
What's wrong. Vehicle description: travel trailers. The wrong load range tires were inadvertently installed. Affected units will have load range "b" tires instead of the required load range "c" tires.
Risk. If the travel trailer was loaded to a weight that exceeded the capacity of the tires, a tire failure could occur, resulting in a loss of control.
Fix. Dealers will install load range "c" tires on affected vehicles. Owner notification began may 18, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact coachmen at 1-219-825-5821.

Trailer Hitches
What's wrong. Vehicle description: travel trailers and fifth wheel vehicles equipped with tekonsha or bargman breakaway switch assemblies. The subject switches are base parts 2011 and 50-85-009, and are branded tekonsha (2011) and bargman (50-85-009). These may be packaged in kit numbers 1026, 1028, 2011-23, 2028-23, 2011p, 2011ap, 20005, 20010, 20015, 20020, 2026, 2026-lb, 2028, 1026-lb, 50-85-200, 50-85-201, 50-85-250, 5061404, 5061406, 5061407, 5061408, 5061410, 5061506, 5061507, 5061508, 5067406, 5067407, 5067408, 5067409, and 5067410. The internal switching mechanism may fail to make proper contact and provide electrical continuity when the breakaway pin is pulled. This condition may result in no electrical power to the trailer brakes in the event of a trailer breakaway situation and could occur without warning.
Risk. In the event of a trailer breaking loose from a tow vehicle, the malfunction of a breakaway switch could result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, property damage or both.
Fix. Tekonsha is notifying distributors and original equpiment manufacturers and will replace the defective breakaway device with new breakaway kits free of charge. Also, tekonsha will reimburse for all freight charges to and from its customers on recalled part number.

What's wrong. On certain rear diesel motor homes equipped with optional gas generators, the generator fuel fill gas cap provided with the unit may not completely seal against the rim of the fill tube.
Risk. This could allow any gas that is splashed against the cap during vehicle operation, sudden stops, or turns, or a crash, to leak out. If gas is allowed to leak out through the unsealed cap/fill connection, the potential for a fire exists.
Fix. Dealers will replace the generator fuel fill tube and cap assembly. Owner notification began january 23, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact coachmen at 1-800-453-6064.

The contact owns a 2024 Forest River Catalina RV. The contact stated that the weight capacity information on the federal weight sticker was incorrect. The contact stated that due to the error, one of the wheels on the RV experienced a blowout. The contact stated that the sticker indicated a tire loading weight of 1432 lbs., which was lower than the correct load weight. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 6,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 coachmen catalina. After purchasing the camper in march of 2018, it was immediately used to go on a long distance trip. While traveling, it was discovered that the propane fuel had leaked out the container. The propane container was refilled, but the failure continued. The contact discovered that the rubber propane line was making contact with the front driver side, which caused a six inch hole in the line. The contact performed a temporary repair and continued the trip. It was also discovered that the brake line was making contact with the passenger side leaf spring. The manufacturer and an unknown recreational vehicle dealer were notified of the failures. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 125. *tt *tr

In june 2010 we went to move our rv and when we opened the door there was a strong smell of ammonia. We discovered the dometic rv refrigerator model rm2652 serial #42708236 was not operating. We turned the refrigerator off and removed all spoiled food. Within a few weeks of this happening we heard from friends who have a rv just like ours that a recall had been made on this model refrigerator. We received a copy of the recall information from them and our refrigerator had all problems listed on the recall list. We contacted dometic by phone was issued an id#28302359 and then told our refrigerator did not qualify for replacement. We followed up with a letter on july 13, 2010 and ask them to reconsider since our unit had all problems listed on there recall list, but we have not had any response from them as of this date. Since our friends unit had not completely shut down they are repairing, but will not do anything for our unit. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2001 coachmen catalina equipped with a dometic rm2652. The contact stated that the refrigerator was included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 08e032000 (equipment). An authorized dealer was notified, and informed the contact of the repair procedures. The contact declined to have the refrigerator repaired because she believed the repairs were insufficient. The contact stated that the repairs would not prevent the failure from occurring, but only contain the possible fire damage. The manufacturer was made aware of the situation, but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.

He also smelled a strong odor of ammonia. He received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign id number 08e032000 (equipment) and notified the dometic customer center. The representative stated that they would be responsible for the recall kit; however, the contact stated that the remedy would not correct the issue. The part number was unknown.
Mid november 2008 the refrigerator in my coachman camper trailer quit working. I discovered that the coolant liquid had leaked out. I had not yet gotten it in for repairs when i received a recall notice from dometic on jan 2, 2009 for this exact problem. This was my first notice of this problem even though after calling dometic , i discovered that they had been aware of the problem for several years. Upon contacting dometic i was also informed that they would replace the heat shield only after i had the repairs done out of my own pocket. How can they take the position that they are not responsible for these repairs when it is clear that the defect and breakdown of the equipment is entirely due to their faulty equipment and negligence? Is there a course of action to be taken to rectify this situation other than hiring an attorney? The camper info is as follow: 2001 coachman catalina 249qb model # 041 # . The refrigerators info is : dometic model # rm2652 serial # 10203991. *tr

Purchased travel trailer new 8-31-19. The tires Goodride radial ST 100 225/75/R15 have less than 5,000 miles of highway use. Had a vibration in the tow vehicle for about 600 miles (we only travel about 200 miles per day)when the drivers side front tire on the travel trailer blew. We immediately pulled off to the side of the highway. Upon inspection of the tire it appears that the cause was the belt separated. After inspecting the remaining tires on the trailer it looks like the tires on the rear axle are larger than the ones on the front axle. Could not find a dealer for that brand of tire. Contacted Forest River Coachmen inquiring where we might find a dealer, we were told the vendor for that tire was Hispec wheel and tire in Mishawaka Indiana, that brand of tire was not listed on their web site so we have bought 4 new tires to ensure our safety since we are about 1,500 miles from home. The pictures show that the tread separated from the belt and the inside of the tires that were replaced had bubbles on the inside of the tire. We are now out $500.00 for tires that were 3 years old with less than 5,000 miles on them.
Tire Size: ST225/75R15 DOT 1AD B4TRT1 3420 Manufacturer: Trailer King- These tires are dangerous!! While towing my travel trailer, driving at the posted speed limit of 65mph in October 2025, the driver side rear trailer tire failed (1st). After replacement with the spare, approximately 35 miles further down I-95, the passenger side rear tire failed (2nd). Both tires were replaced in South Carolina at a tire repair shop. Arrived at final destination that evening (Jacksonville, FL). During trip back to VA while transiting on I-95 N (in GA), a third tire (driver side front) failed, replaced blown tire at a Wal-mart in the area. Remaining tire (same lot and size) which was purchased together, was also removed from the travel trailer at that time due to noted bulging outward circumferentially in the center of the tire tread. In each case, the tire tread separated from the tires, leaving sidewall in place. I have several pictures which record both tire condition, manufacturer and LOT. While there was some moderate damage to my travel trailer, requiring repair, I was fortunate the subject tires did not fail simultaneously which could have resulted in significant stability issues (towing) and potential fatal motor vehicle accident.
4-2013 traveling on i-40 around memphis tn the lead tire on the roadside of the rv blew out. Pavement dry, no object was hit. The blow out took the fender off the trailer and bent the gas line to the stove. Purchased new tire. This rv had only 1500 miles when this occurred. 6-2013 traveling on i-86 near campbell, ny the lead tire on the passenger side blew out taking the fender off and bending the landing jack the pavement was dry and not obstacles were hit in the roadway. Put on spare and continued to our destination. The second tire split across the tire and then tread peeled off the same as the first tire. We purchased 4 new heavy duty trailers tires. Our insurance paid for the damage to the rv, less two, $250 deductibles and the cost the new tires. *jb
Prepared for 10 day vacation from texas to south dakota via oklahoma, kansas, nebraska, returning via wyoming, colorado, new mexico. All tire verified inflated at 75 psi (within 10% of max upon departure. Tire had 80% tread left according to midrometer measurement when tires replaced after multiple blowouts. Tires were on 2000 coachman catalina class c 23 ft motorhome. First tire blew out causing severe damage to underside, storage compartments, and kitch cabinets on right side of motor home. Put on spare and with 15 miles a second tire blew out on inside left. This tire took out lp gas line to refigerator and hot water heater as well as severe damage to underside, storage compartments, and bathroom floor/cabinets. Within the next 100 miles, a 3rd tire started to separate but i was able to pull over before complete blowout. Unknown at the time was the rear brake lines had been compromised. The rear brakes completely failed by the time we reached denver, co. Very traumatizing experience and because of our remote location, we were unable to match replacement tires by size or brand. Through the grace of god we made it home safely and the rv is now at a dealership awaiting insurance estimate and repairs. Unfortunately, the insurance company wants the old tires so they can go after firestone for reimbursement but i did not want to carry them 2000 miles back to texas. Do i have any recourse through firestone to get new matching tires on the ground as well as the spare (7 tires total)? *tr
We have a 2000 coachmen class c rv motorehome. We were traveling east on rt 36 going about 60 mph and had a blowout in agra,ks. It was the rear outside tire on the passengers side. It was a steeltex radial r4s...lt225/75/r16. *ak we have been tracking the firestone tires since 10/2/2000 and have called everybody about out steeltex tires...to no available. When there was the contraversary about psi on the inside door differing from the tire psi we have kept our tires at the psi indicated on the tire itself and have faithfully maintained that psi. We are replacing the remaining 5 firestone tires because we feel sure that if it was one of the front tires....we would have rolled the rv over and been dead. We are going to persue this with firestone to see if we can come to some kind of agreement. It should cost us over $600.00 to $700.00 to replace the tires.

Trailer was traveling straight at 65 mph on nj route 78 eastbound when the right front axle tire tread blew apart from the carcass. Trailer had a functioning tire pressure monitoring system at the time of failure. Approximately one half mile before blowout the pressures were between 85-86 psi and the wheel temps were below 100 degrees. The trailer was scaled at 8800 pounds, trailer axle at 7860 pounds. These are well below the manufacturers max ratings on the trailer's placard. The tpms alerted to a rapid air loss. The goodride trailer tire was shredded and caused $3100. In damage to the side of the trailer. The tire manufacturer has not responded to 3 separate requests for assistance in regards to their failed product. The morning of the incident all 4 tires were visually inspected by me and there were no abnormalities noted in the tread or sidewall areas. After getting the tires replaced at a local shop, i asked them to inspect the 3 remaining goodride tires. The shop stated they saw nothing wrong with the 3 remaining original equipment tires. I replaced them as well since no one could cite why it self destructed. I saved the blown out tire. The other 3 i had to leave behind since i was traveling 1000 miles from home and had no room to store them. It is easy to blame the consumer when a tire fails. I was not exceeding the tires speed rating or load rating. I ran nothing over, which would have possibly caused a slow leak leading to the blowout. There are hundreds of reports like this on the owners forums. 99% of them are tire made in china. I replaced with goodyear endurance trailer tires since i could not find a single report of an incident like mine online. These goodrides are a ticking time bomb and need to be investigated along with the corporate lack of response.
My family was just leaving a campground after a nice memorial day weekend camping trip. We were about 1/2 mile outside the campground when we lost a wheel causing the axle to hang down. Luckily my husband was able to safely get the camper to the side of the road. This was due to a faulty wheel baring that had come loose. Thankfully, no one was injured, but i would like to ask the company lippert, who manufactures frames. Jacks, axles, bearings, etc. For many rv companies,"what would have happened if we were traveling down the interstate at 60 mph not 25 mph? Or, do you even care that you are manufacturing faulty equipment that put peoples lives in danger?" apparently there are several recalls for lippert products, none of which i have received notification about by mail, email, or phone. *tr

Our 1995 ford coachman motorhome was bought in 2010. We were unaware of any callback until we received a letter july 23,2014. This vehicle caught on fire nov 2012-total loss as well as part of our home, 24 ft filled cargo trailer , reg trailer, etc over $100,000 loss. The state & local fire chief/marshall refused to investigate the fire & ruled it 'unfounded or undetermined. He just looked at it & said i am not even going to bring a dog in or do anything with this. Clean up your yard. Most of the fire restoration co refused to come give an estimate as they stated our insurance 'doesn't pay'. They currently have a grade online of a d in regards to claims. Our insurance refused to pay anything & argued immensely after we submitted 75 pages, took over 1,000 pictures, our city boro fined us, our neighbors harassed us over this, we have incurred numerous costs & harassment due to this fire loss. When we called ford last week after receiving the letter-they told us we had to hire an investigator-to 'evaluate' our claim. Since our boro fined us - we were forced to start tearing it down before we even knew about the recall. When hazard lights are activated, brake lights do not illuminate when service brakes are applied. This was discovered while traveling in heavy rain up a hill at about 40 mph. The owner of the truck following me informed me when we stopped at a rest area. This failure occurs while stopped or at any speed.*ak

The boro further states we must remove & get rid of the rest of it no matter what and they 'don't care'. *js
Ford speed control deactivation switch (scds). Recall 05s28. Called ford today and they said they can not replace the part because they do not have the part. Said will not have it, maybe till dec. They said they will disconnect the speed control till the parts come in. This vehicle is a motor home. We use our motor home a lot. Now i am suppose to wait till the parts, maybe will be in, in dec????? Plus i get 8 miles to the gallon of gas and i am suppose to drive 25 miles each way to get this fixed 2 times? Total of 100 miles. This will coast me about 12 gallons of gas at $265 a gallon. Total $31.00 for gas and my time and they don't even have the part in. Can you help us out? *jb

Transmission failure. Owners manual states if your vehicle is equiped with an electronic 4-speed automatic (e4od or 4r70w) transmission, operate in overdrive. Etc, (page 247 of owners manual.) transmission failed after pulling a 2,000 lb trailer and contents for approximate 2400 miles. This is well below the towing capacity of this vehicle. Problem is: some ford dealers say that you should never pull in overdrive regardless of trailer weight and some say that this transmission is ok to pull in overdrive as stated in the owners manual. The same with r/v dealers. There is no set consensus as to what gear to pull in. The transmission failed at 39740 miles which is about 3000 miles over the 36000 mile warantee and being a 1995 vehicle it is 5 years over the year warantee. But either case, at 39,740 miles it is a little premature and even if pulling a trailer the owners manual should state not to pull in overdrive.
Consumer states that the design of the axle on the vehicle can not properly hold the vehicle. The consumer has had four tires replaced due to this problem. Contacted dealer and the dealer is not willing to do anything. Nlm *yh
