How to read a Coachmen Freedom Express VIN — every digit explained
Every Coachmen Freedom Express carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Coachmen and the country it was built in (real Coachmen codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Freedom Express.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- —1MW · 1TC · 1TE · 1TJ · 1TX
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Freedom Express, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

Traveling east on 146n just on the downhill side of the fred hartman bridge a good samaritan hailed our attention that the right rear wheel was on fire of our travel trailer. We pulled over out of danger to an entrance to a pubic boat ramp. There was a centerpointe energy personal that helped extinguish the fire to the axle. The tire and wheel had removed itself from the spindle and rolled into the ditch. Calling on an emergency road repair service to repair the trailer bearing, it was noticed that there was no bearing race installed in the wheel hub on the inboard side. The emergency road repair technician replaced the bearings races and repacked the bearings to specifications to have us return home for the evening. We then took the travel trailer to a repair shop to have it properly repaired and the other wheel bearings inspected. *tr
July 2023 and May 2024 opposite spring hangers broke off. The first time it blew a tire out on my travel trailer. The second time I realized what had happened before something catastrophic happened. Now my 4-year-old travel trailer is unsafe to be pulled on the highway. After some research, I have noticed this has been an issue with Lippert frames for quite some time. This time it flattened the arch in the leaf springs and my travel trailer is leaning approximately 4 " on 1 side.
Our 2018 coachmen freedom express 287bhds with lippert (lci) frame experienced a failure of the steel frame while making a turn in a residential neighborhood. The hanger for the leaf spring suspension broke off the frame. Large cracks were also visible both north and south of the broken suspension hanger. *tr
Frame failure occurred bilaterally where the tongue of the travel trailer was attached to the undercarriage. Cracks were vertical and almost completely through the structural supports. This caused the I beam to buckle. Fortunately, the breaks were discovered just prior to fully separating. We had a trailer repair place examine and provide an estimate for repairs, which was $20,000. Our insurance company sent out an inspector who said that there was rust and the damage had been existing for awhile. Our claim was denied. There were no warning systems in place. Everything else on the trailer was working fine. As we were towing it, my husband thought the front of the trailer looked lower than usual. A review of the web indicates that trailer frames made by Lippert during this period were subpar.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 coachmen freedom express. While checking the air pressure in the tires, the contact noticed cracks underneath the vehicle in the middle of the frame. The vehicle was taken to campers inn rv of raleigh (located at 1501 outlet center dr, selma, nc 27576, (984) 223-2203), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.
2017 coachmen freedom express 276rkds. Consumer writes in regards to improper mounting of propane bottles. *ld the consumer stated the wires that rest on the leaf springs making chaffing and shorting inevitable. The underbelly was not heated as stated by the manufacturer exterior electrical wires have no conduit. There are openings underneath the slide out that could potentially allow intrusion of insect, rodents and debris as well as, releasing heat. The interior electrical outlets and light fixtures are installed into the doorskin paneling, not into the frame. They either fall or break.the roof and awning were poorly assembled. Various doors and trimmings were falling apart. The battery was installed improperly causing the box lid to blow off. The windows do not close correctly and the screens do not fit. The refrigerator does not properly operate. The trailer leaked black sewage at the valve. The sink was poorly designed. *js
The right frame section and right rear suspension mounting bracket ripped completely apart. The rest of the frame twisted and the walls/body buckled. 2016 coachmen freedom express 229tbs (travel trailer). Lippert frame. A deadly or catastrophic accident could have occurred. I noticed the wheels were not tracking properly. I crawled around under the trailer and discovered the frame and axle/suspension mounting bracket had ripped completely apart. The mounting section spun around and upwards into the trailer. The tires were rubbing into the wheel well. If i hadn't noticed and we kept driving my family or another family could have been killed or badly injured. It was fortunate that there was still some day light left when i noticed this. The trailer would have come apart on the highway if we had continued driving at highway speeds. This trailer is less than three (3) years old. This has to be indicative of unsafe manufacturing. Forest river, their company coachmen and lippert are producing unsafe travel trailers. We literally could have had a bad accident if i hadn't noticed in time. My insurance company had to total the rv.
The Lippert frame on our 2015 Coachman Freedom Express has cracks of the frame near the tires. There are also multiple spider cracks throughout the frame. Lippert says they aren't responsible for anything since the unit is over 5 years old. There are campers 30 years old out on the road. How can you only cover a frame for 5 years for structural defects?
The steel I-beam that is the basic frame on this trailer has extensive cracking and breakage. The steel hanger that holds up the leaf spring in completely broken away from the frame and the rear most axle. A certified RV service repair shop investigated the problem and declared there is so much cracking that the trailer in totaled and undrivable. If driven further there is a chance the real axle will fall away from the frame which is a serious safety issue. There is no warning about this problem but was detected when fast excessive tire wear occurred on one tire. The service center showed me a record of the exact same problem, on the exact trailer type (Coachman Freedom Express) that they looked at prior to my problem. The trailer is 12 years old and a steel frame should last for decades! An on-line Google search uncovered other Freedom Express owners have similar problems. Both the manufacturer (Forrest Rive/Coachman) and the frame/axle subcontractor (Lippert) have been unresponsive to my safety concerns. I am turning to you for advice and to present to you this formal complaint. I have pictures should you need documentation.
Blew a trail express power towing 225/75r/15 load range d this past weekend on my 2014 coachman 320bhds. It made a loud blast and i pulled over instantly. I just filled the tires to their recommended tire pressure of 65 psi before i left. Tires have max of 2500 miles on them.

Returning from vacation in knoxville, iowa we were traveling west on the turner turnpike between tulsa and oklahoma city. The travel trailer had made a sudden move to change lanes, i immediately slowed down and looked in my left mirror to notice a fire, sparks and smoke coming from the left side of the travel trailer. I stopped and extinguished a fire in the left rear wheel bearing and hub. I called a heavy duty wrecker service to assist in moving the truck and trailer from danger of the turnpike. We spent the night in the parking lot of flying j truck stop. The next morning i was able to call a repair shop to have the travel trailer axles and bearings repaired. Currently the trailer is in oklahoma city having the damages assessed. This is the second incident we have had on the same axle within 6 months. *tr

This RV trailer was being towed on an Interstate Highway when the right side (curbside) rear spring hanger detached from the I-beam. The right rear axle, of this double-axle trailer, shifted forward causing the rear tire to grind into the front one. Fortunately, the right middle and front spring hangers held the axles somewhat in place and the truck&trailer coasted safely onto the shoulder. Although clean metal can be seen in the break, this section of the I-beam and adjacent welds have rusted. These suspension components by Lippert have, in my opinion, prematurely rusted in that it was manufactured and purchased in late-2014, is only 7 years old, and has been towed for only 40,000 miles. Numerous postings to RV Forums have detailed other incidents of premature rusting of Lippert suspensions and detailed steps taken to weld reinforcing plates, angles, and beams to strengthen original components. Included below: pics of detached right-side rear hanger, left-side rear hanger (for comparison), and frame-mfg label. Not shown is repair estimate from Spring & Axle Co. equaling $1,700 (contains personal info).

Tl* the contact owns a 2011 coachmen freedom express. While the vehicle was parked, the contact discovered that the trailer's outriggers were bulging and fractured the frame. The trailer was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front and rear axles fractured and needed to be repaired. The trailer was repaired; however, the trailer recently failed a state inspection due to fractures in the middle of the two axles. The trailer was not taken to the dealer or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 7,000.
Traveling down highway pulling camper. Stopped in rest area and observed that rear axle had bent and right side tire was at approx 20-25degree angle. After that had been repaired. 2 days later the leaf spring on right side in front of front axle snapped. The vehicle was less than 1 year old. The axle manufacturer eventually sent heavier duty axles to warranty them, refused to cover damage caused by their bent and defective axle. When the manufacturer of the camper was contacted, it was referred back to the axle manufacturer and doing nothing for the cracked spring, which was repaired at my expense, even though the vehicle was still covered under the original warranty. *kb

The tire size: ST225/75R15. Purchased on 06/21/2021. With less than 2500 miles we blew out drivers side rear. Upon checking other tires, the passenger rear tread was separated from core, replaced both rear tires in Grand Junction, CO, 09/07/2022. On 09/17/2022, the passenger front tire blew, causing damage to the trailer, removing the fender skirt and damage to te body structure around the wheel well. Upon checking other tires, the drivers front tread was separated from the core, and both tires were replaced in Kearney, NE, on 06/19/2022. We currently have all four tires replaced with the same type tire, and are very uncomfortable with these tires due to this experience. I reported this experience to the BigO dealer and he said the manufacturer would not do anything after reporting to them. Thank you for letting me tell you about our situation. I’m sure nothing will be done. [XXX]. Phone number: [XXX]…..also, I have pictures and invoices available. I don’t know how to attach them to this report. Stove came equipped in my 2019 Coachmen Freedom Express 204RD and is in many other RVs. Staged a pot of coffee on the Furrion RV stove and the pot tipped over. Have had this occur multiple times. No injuries but there are multiple blogs on the internet of people experiencing the same issue with this unsafe RV stove top grate design. Smaller pans, coffee pots, etc. can tip over which could lead to a serious injury, legal liability and fires. Contacted the manufacturer of the stove (Lippert/Furrion) reporting the hazard with no reply back in June of 2025. Contacted CPSC in 2025 and filed a report with them. CPSC stated it is a vehicle related concern and should be filed with NHTSA. I believe the manufacture is still selling stoves with this unsafe design today as I have seen pictures of new brand new RVs with the same grate design. I do not want to see a pet, child or any other person injured due to this significant stove flaw. Thank you.
