How to read a Daewoo NUBIRA VIN — every digit explained
Every Daewoo NUBIRA carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Daewoo and the country it was built in (real Daewoo codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this NUBIRA.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- South KoreaKLA
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your NUBIRA, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

Engine And Engine Cooling 332 Read
On 7/26/04 while travelling at approximately 35 mph, vehicle suddenly died. The timing belt went, damaging valves and cylinder head. Fortunately, vehicle had 57,000 miles and was under warranty. However, the front control arms/bushings/ sway bar were also bad. Unfortunately, these were not covered by warranty. Items were replaced. Now it seems the oil pump is going, oil is leaking and there is low pressure along with catalytic converter going. Dealer says these items will be covered.*ak
Nar 03/05/2003 the consumer engine compartment was caught on fire. Dealer notified. *cb
Until 1:30 p.m. Today (june 3, 2004), i thought my 2002 daewoo nubira was a god-sent because of its excellent gas economy (~30 mpg). The engine caught on fire this afternoon and now it's a piece of junk. I have been doing my oil change every 3000 miles and so far i've put about 39000 miles on it. As far as i know, this should not have happened but it did!!! I hope this is not one of those things daewoo is trying to hide. Those of you who have the daewoo's, please have your car checked immediately by a trained professional for any kind of potential failure. I have no idea why the engine caught on fire. I was driving with the ac on and suddenly i noticed smoke in my rear view mirror. Then smoke started coming out of the vents and then i saw flames out of the left side of the engine. I changed my oil about 2 weeks ago and i have been driving it everyday. Can't be the coolant or the engine oil because it was driving fine for two weeks. Owners of daewoo, beware!!! Don't let this happen to you. Get your car checked-out asap for any potential problems. Maybe the daewoo engine is only good for 40000 miles and since mine's close, it just died on me. I am only glad i was not hurt and no one else was on the highway. I managed to pull over during rush hour traffic in dallas and i just watched my car burn. If there are other complaints like this, i haven't seen it and if this is the first, i hope it will be the last because i don not want anyone else to go through what i did this afternoon. *jb

Front lower control arms have to be changed due to bushings going bad, if these bushings fail it can lead to crashes from having unstable steering.found a recall in aulstralia for the same thing. Car jerks to the sides at speeds as low as 15 miles per hour and up. I was driving 55 when my car jerked real hard to the left.have to have the whole arm replaced to fix this problem lowest price i recieved is 500.00. Have been told by service station they have been replacing a lot of these
The daewoo nubira 2001 should be recalled to replace lower control arms which are attached to the suspension. I feel the control arms' inadequacies are catastrophes waiting to happen. The control arms are faulty and could cause steering failure. This is a part that is replaced on this car model too often. What happens if someone does not have $700 to pay for repair? I ask this because when i drive the daewoo it is increasing difficult to hold it on the road due to the front end rack and pinion steering jerking left and right. I limit my driving to the supermarket and small errands because of this problem, and because of this defect i drive slowly and on small streets. Getting on the highway is completely out of the question. I was told by the technician at motor city, odessa, texas, 432-550-8721, that the ball joint may fall from the frame causing loss of control. I need replacement of these crucial parts. I can live with peeling paint, barely functioning electric windows, and a non functioning air conditioner, but i cannot live with a steering problem that is veering out of control. I know that daewoo is no longer in business - but gmc is. I also know that the ratio of daewoos to other automobiles on the road is low; however, any function or part on a product that may cause even one accident due to mechanical failure should be taken seriously by your department. An accident caused by a malfunctioning steering mechanism on any automobile may lead to someone's death. *tr
The front control arm is defective, vehicle makes a loud noise when shutting off. Cam shaft sensor recall 04v357000. *ak
Front lower ball joints failure caused the front tires to wear out prematurely. Dealership repaired the problem. *ak
Lower control arms on 2001 daewoo nubira with 32,365 miles on it are defective. Daewoo refused to get back to me on replacement because it was under 36,000 mile warranty. Goss dodge in burlington, vt. Was suppose to be in contact with them but i have heard nothing from them. The car is dangerous to drive because it has to do with the front suspension.*ak
The lower bushing arms need to be replaced on my vehicle. The vehicle has bounced from day one. Now i find this out and the warranty nor the extended warranty cover this. 2001 daewoo nubira with 35,000 miles. *la
Vehicle had several problems. While driving a noise was heard coming from the rear. Dealer found that parking brake clips were broken. During an inspection of the brakes, dealer discovered that front control arm and bushings had to be replaced. Also, front rotors were replaced, once and turned once. *ak vehicle shimmied when brakes were depressed. Engine light would go on and off, camshaft was replaced.*ts
Suspension problem. Lower control arms. Has a bad vibration over 60 mph. Also makes creaking noise in front end. Front tires worn down really bad. *jb
Consumer states that while driving at various speeds and without warning there is a heavy vibration in the vehicle because the control arm is causing the tire to wear .

The following complaint pertains to speed control and steering control systems of 2000 daewoo nubira. Speed control: (recurring, unpredictable). *ak problem occurred while attempting to park. Pulled into a parking space with foot on brake pedal, engine suddenly raced (as if id floored the accelerator) and car surged forward (foot still pressing brake). Had to turn ignition off to stop car. Happened again (same day) at a traffic signal. Would have rear-ended vehicle in front of me if i had not allowed for distance of two car lengths between it/myself. My 62-year-old mother owns this vehicle. Says she uses emergency hand brake when this happens, and initially complained of same problem over a year ago. Dealer (hillside auto-mall, hillside, nj) said no problem was found! Asked if problem could possibly be due to a manufacturing defect? Dealer stated, thats an issue you will have to take up with the manufacturer. We just sell the cars! steering control: (recurring, unpredictable) while driving and/or accelerating vehicle will unexpectedly pull (sharply) to the right and become difficult to control. Behavior extremely pronounced in wet weather and when accelerating! No noticeable problem found, but similar complaints are on file! Notification of recall: did not receive vehicle recall, nhtsa campaign id number 02v257000, addressing vehicle safety standard no. 106, brake hoses. Will seek assistance of the dealership to address this issue. For the record: vehicle is only three years old, and (currently) has registered less than 20,000 miles. Of the many complaints on record at this site, those concerning speed control and steering control are the most troubling. Are they coincidental!!! My mother will try (again) to get these issues resolved at the dealership where vehicle was purchased. Gut feeling, however, is that concerns will not be addressed until someone is seriously injured, or worse. I pray it does not come to that!
The consumer found that the creaking in the front end of the vehicle was due to bad lower control arms. The consumer is waiting on parts, and since then, she has experienced steering jumping, bad handles in wef weather, and the vehicle takes off over bumps.
There is vibration when braking. Dealer has replaced front rotors 3 times.*ak brake pedal also feels to be dropping, taking more effort to stop vehicle. Dealer found rotors slightly out of round. Location of brake pedal too close to gas pedal. Check engine light on. Dealer found knock sensor low input. Black debris inside coolant reservoir. Dealer states deposit in reservoir is normal. *tt
Engine check light is illuminating, indicating that loose acceleration will cause vehicle to slow down.*ak

I have 2000 daewoo nubiria with 65k miles, i received a recall notice for the camshaft sensor. It upset me to learn that my car was not part of the recall. I have had my daewoo since aug 2000. I have had several problems go on with my car. In 2000, door handles peeling off (replaced) in 2002, new door handles peeling off (never received another new pair because of back order) in 2002, replaced back rotors and pads (back brakes locked up while driving, i paid for) in 2004, replaced stop lamp (could not move car into driving gear, i paid for) in 2004, engine check light comes on and off (thought this would be taken care as part of the recall; need to be replaced) in 2004, in line fuse (needs to be replaced) in 2004, lower control arms (needs to be replaced) in 2004, vc gasket (needs to be replaced) i cannot afford to put any more money into a car that is worthless and cannot afford to buy a new car.... I don't know what do! *nm
I purchased a new daewoo nubira in june 2000. In may 2003 the check engine light came on and remained on despite numerous diagnotic and repair attempts. The light remained on for over a year. In january of 2004 i took my car for the now required emissions test, it failed due to the camshaft sensor. I purchased the required part, a camshaft position sensor, on 1/15/04 and paid a mechanic to perform the repairs. The light illuminated again within 3 days of repair. On september 12th, i received a notification of defect from daewoo motoramerica, adressing the said camshaft sensor. One month later the car began to hesitate while i was driving, and would not accelerate smoothly, finally it in may, while i was driving on the highway, all the lights on the instument panel came on, the car began to shake and then just shut down. In regards to the sensor, i believe that daewoo motors was negligent in their responsibility to notify consumers in a timely manner. After visiting several consumer affairs sites, it is apparent that this defect manifested itself as early as 2/2002 for the majority of car owners, yet daewoo has taken 2 1/2 years to notify owners. *ak
When the consumer turned the key in the ignition, the vehicle accelerated without the gas pedal being depressed. *jb the front brakes were noisy and were found corroded, a loud noise was coming from the a/c, the cup holder was inoperative, the tech found the fog lamp was inoperative, the trunk was inoperative, the tire was wearing uneven, both front control arms were noisy, there was an electrical wiring problem, the cam belt had broken and there was possible cylinder head damage, the vehicle would not start due to the timing belt which broke and caused the valves to bend. *sc the consumer stated the rear brakes were noisy, there was a loud noise coming from the air condition, the fog lamp was inoperative, the hub cap was replaced, the trunk latch was replaced, the left and right control arms were replaced. *jb
Brake light switch failed, causing vehicle to lock up and not move. Contacted dealer, and dealer is not willing to do anything.*ak
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 55 mph on normal road conditions, the engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealership who determined the crankshaft position center activated the check engine light. A recall letter was received however the dealer did not perform the recall remedy. Although the vehicle's vin was included in the recall the camshaft lot range was out of scope.*ak

About a month ago the oil light came on. I had it checked and the oil was full so i called the dealer and took it in. Melissa said it was a good thing the light came on because if not the engine/transmission could have locked because there was sludge in there and the motor was not getting enough oil. She said it was cleaned out and the warranty covered the large part of it and my cost was $106.00. On june 12th the oil light comes on again and the car starts to tick. I check the oil and it's full so i drove the car to the dealer and melissa tells me the only way it could be covered under warranty is that i need proof of all the oil changes and $300.00 to get started. It's evident to me that the car had engine problems from the manufacturer and i need to be reimbursed. This is the only car i have and it is essential to my financial well being. Please help quickly.

I own a 1999 daewoo nubira. For the last year or so it does what the toyotas are doing. More so in the summer months. This past saturday when i was stopped it started revving in drive, i put it in neutral, it revved higher, i put it in park and it settled down. This morning at 2 am. In cool weather, it even was revving in park, i had to turn it off. What should i do. Have you had other complaints? Thank you *tr
