How to read a Ford E-450 VIN — every digit explained
Every Ford E-450 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Ford and the country it was built in (real Ford codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this E-450.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

What's wrong. Elkhart coach has notified nhtsa about a defect in certain transit buses equipped with certain ricon s series and k series l-model wheelchair lifts, due to a problem in the software that controls the lift's "up" function. If the "up" switch is released before the floor level limit switch is activated, the lift may continue its upward travel for approximately 1 second before stopping. The continued upward travel may overrun the floor level cut off point.
Risk. When the platform overruns the vehicle floor level and stops at an angle from 15-20 degrees, it is possible for a person in a wheelchair to tip over and for someone standing on the platform to fall, possibly resulting in injuries.
Fix. Elkhart coach will notify owners and the repairs will be performed by authorized ricon dealers free of charge. Currently ricon is developing a software solution and is not available. What's wrong. Elkhart coach has notified nhtsa of a defect in certain transit buses fitted with ricon public use lifts. The restraint belt on these lifts was designed to prevent the lift from moving, unless the tongue of the belt is fully engaged and latched in the buckle. Ricon has discovered, however, that it is possible for the operator to insert the belt tongue into the buckle without fully engaging the latching mechanism. In this case, the restraint belt would appear to be latched, and the operator could run the lift. If the restraint belt tongue is not fully engaged into the restraint belt buckle, and latched, the lift may operate with an occupant on the platform.
Risk. The user of the lift could be injured should the lift move without the restraint belt properly buckled.
Fix. Elkhart coach is working with ricon and ricon will be handling the remedy for this campaign. Please see ricon's defect report 09e-060. Ricon will provide customers with a warning decal and a dvd-based training aid. The safety recall began on july 27, 2010. Owners may contact ricon customer service at 800-322-2884, emailing at [email protected].

Until the software solution is available, ricon will provide owners with a bulletin outlining proper wheelchair lift operation and will ship owners a dvd-based training aid to promote proper lift operation at no cost. The safety recall began on july 27, 2010. Owners may contact ricon customer service at 800- 322-2884, emailing at [email protected].

This was the third steeltex tire to fail on this vehicle. This vehicle was manufactured overweight. The secondary manufacturer has offered to exchange it for a new motorhome. I have serious reservations that the new unit is safe. (tiresize: 225 75 16e)( dot number: tire size: 225 75 16e )
The contact owns a 2019 Entegra Odyssey RV constructed on a 2019 Ford E450 chassis equipped with Hankook Tires, Tire Line: Dynapro HT, Tire Size: LT225/75/R16, DOT Number: BCXEHUH. The contact stated that upon inflating the tires, his brother was informed that the tires needed to be replaced as they had dry rotted. Additionally, the contact stated that the tires were consistently becoming flat while driving. The Tire dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The RV dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The tires were not replaced. The RV and tire failure mileage was 6,000.
Bought 2016 thor four winds model vin [xxx] 8-3-2015 new. Took it out on the first road trip oct 2015 and had a flat tire due to improper installation of mud flaps by campland rv. Had to argue with campland and thor to get the tire covered. This ended up costing me time, money and lose of use. I had to pay for the new tire and pay to have it mounted. I complained that the other tires were damaged from the rubbing and losing air. They would not replace the other tire damaged from the rubbing of the damaged tire. Filed a claim for tire 11-20-2015 229.79 12-3-2015 +99 mount 12-3-2015 complained to campland and thor motor coach about camper leak and tire issues again losing air campland set tires to mfg specs. Nothing was done about the tires. Took rv out on another trip oct 2016 checked tire psi upon return trip because tires looked low. Had a tire company air up the tires in alabama. Upon the return trip home had a tire blow out on the interstate. Contacted campland, ford, michelin, ford freeway ford. I told them i did not feel safe driving the rv with bad tires and i asked for them to be replaced. Took rv to discount tire, and they recommended replacement. Tire had less than 4,000 miles. Ford towed the rv to freeland ford to fix the blow out and fix the rest of the tires. The rv was down from oct 2016-jan 10 2017. The results were slow and no one wanted to take accountability for the bad tires losing air. Everyone wants to keep pointing fingers, but nothing gets done. Finally replaced the blown out tire and tightened the value stems. Upon towing the towing company did not leave the axle freeland had to replace the axle from towing. Got the rv back and complained again that tires were losing air. May 1 2017 went to take rv out for next trip it has 6,000 miles on it and it has flat tires again. Called campland, ford, michelin, freeway ford, again no one wants to take responsibility to replace the damaged tires that lose air still. Tread separated from tread.
Purchased this motor-home new in 2009. Drove the motor-home 4 years approximately 25,000 miles with no problems. In may of 2013, i purchased 6 delta essential tires ( lt225/75r16 ) to replace the old tires that would not pass state inspection due to cracks in the side walls. Then we took a 7500 mile trip across the country and back without incident. When we returned home upon routine inspection of my tires i found a bubble on the inside sidewall of a rear passenger inside dual tire. The tire dealer replaced that tire at no cost. About two month later 10/09/2013, we left on a trip to disney in florida. On 10/10/2013 while on i-95 south bound near midway, ga. The driver's side outside rear dual tread separated and the tire blew out resulting in damage to 2 compartments on the drivers side. We had the tire replaced by roadside assistance on the side of the road ( i-95) where it had blown and then found a place to stay for the night. The next morning 10/11/2013, before we continued our trip i performed my usual pre-trip inspection concentrating on the tires and noticed nothing unusual. After about 3 hours into the trip near ormond, florida the passenger side outside rear dual tread separated and blew out resulting in damage to 2 compartment on that side. We also had to purchase a tire from road side assistance to replace that tire due to being out of spares. We finished the trip and returned home without incident. We are currently working with the tire dealer and insurance company in making repairs to our motor-home. My main concern is 3 out of 6 tires failed under 10,000 miles and these tires should be investigated. As a note i do check my tires routinely... *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 ford e450. While driving at approximate speeds of 45 mph using the cruise control in rainy weather, the vehicle began jerking. The contact stated that there was also a burning smell coming from the vehicle. He was able to move the vehicle off of the road and when he attempted to unlock the doors, the passengers side door would not unlock. In addition, the brake retarder was inoperable. He was able to restart the vehicle. Initially, the vehicle would not change gears but did so within a few minutes. The contact believed that nhtsa campaign id number 07v336000 was directly related to the failure he experienced. The vehicle had not been repaired nor had the manufacturer been contacted. The failure and current mileages were 238,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2000 ford winnebago mini winnie (na). While driving 65 mph, the abs warning light illuminated and the contact smelled something burning. Prior to the failure, the contact noticed that when she would depress the brake pedal, the brakes would push back against her foot. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current mileage was 59,000 and failure mileage was 56,000.
Parking Brake The Sticker on this U-Haul 15 foot Truck says, "Engage the Parking Brake before turning off the Engine, otherwise UNCONTROLLED OPERATION OF VEHICLE may occur.". I pulled on the Parking Brake as the Sticker warned. With my foot off the Gas Pedal, at about 25 - 30 MPH the U-Haul Steered way to the right by itself, and drove onto the Right Curb. This was quite Frightening and Unexpected. Then it happened again later that day at just about 30 MPH, again with my foot off the Gas Pedal and Kind of Coasting into a small Town. Later that Night it happened again at about 25 -30 MPH and pulled to the right and almost into the right side ditch, on a two lane Highway. My Safety was at risk because I could have hit a Telephone Pole or have been steered into the right side ditch. IF it had happened, on a Multi-Lane Highway, I could have Hit a Vehicle in the Right Lane. Others are put at Risk, because anyone on a Sidewalk near the Right side Curb, Could have been Hit, by this Uncontrolled Steering. The U-Haul Regional Manager, Emily Noe said it had not been reported by anyone else. This U-Haul Truck had about 14K miles on it and is fairly new. I assume this U-Haul Truck had been Inspected, before being placed on the Road. There is the Yellow Sticker inside the Truck, with Black Letters that warn about pulling On the Parking Brake before Parking and shutting down the engine....which I did!!! I feel other U-Haul Customers should be warned before an Accident DOES occur. Better Yet this U-Haul Truck should be taken off the Road.

The vehicle was towed to Castle Ford in Michigan City. The vehicle was diagnosed with failed power steering connection line and a failed brake hydro boost unit. The vehicle was then repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V089000 (Steering, Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The contact stated that the failure occurred thirty days after the vehicle was serviced at the dealer and the dealer declined to complete the recall repair. The contact stated that the failure occurred while out of town. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 4,000.
I am a mechanic at Huron Valley Ambulance. Ford has a recall that covers some of our Ambulances. Recall NO: 22S08 for the power steering lines coming apart. I have been having issues with the hoses coming apart even after the recall has been performed. The Ford dealer will not cover this repair after the recall has been done. This is a safety issue as both the steering and braking are effected. It is also time consuming and expensive to repair. I feel this recall is not correcting this problem and needs to be addressed.

Lifters in engine is going out. Ford has made a TSBs for repair because lifters and camshaft was made by a third party and they are defect. Here is Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 25-2200). Vehicle is available for inspection. It was put at risk because vehicle could loose power at any time and potential crash into another car. The problem has been reproduced in 4 different Ford vehicles. Has not been inspected by manufacturer or others. No warning lights were present.
The brand new JAYCO GREWHAWK is making a whining sound from the chassis. I have not even driven it more than 50 miles. this vehicle needs to be recalled for whatever chassis issues or it could be transmission issues. I will take it back to FORD but this is really bad on ford to sell brand new RVs with such whining sound coming from the chassis. Please alert the new owners about the issues . thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
We operate numerous 7.3L Ford engine equipped vehicles in our fleet of ambulances. Over the past year we have experienced 4 engine failures of this 7.3L engine in vehicles ranging form around 60,000 to 90,000 after exceeding the service recommendations stated from the manufacturer. I have contacted the Ford Pro Fleet experts and have asked repeatedly about what could be causing the failures, trying to figure out if we are doing something wrong in our maintenance or operation. They assure us we are not doing anything wrong, however we continue to lose engines. Each time the repair bill is around $12,000. We have been lucky that Ford has offered financial assistance, but now that has gone away. At first, we were told that we were the only ones experiencing these failures, but now I am hearing from other operators of similar vehicles that they are experiencing the same concern. We cannot afford to keep replacing engines in relatively new vehicles, especially when there is an apparent defect in parts or standard operation. Symptoms we experience that lead to engine replacement are loss of power while driving caused my multiple cylinder misfires. Loss of power while running an emergency call pose a significant safety risk to operators and patients.
The contact owns a 2022 Ford E-450. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the steering wheel felt loose, and the vehicle was difficult to control. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated no failure was found, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the vehicle was repaired. The contact was unsure what was repairs were made or what parts were replaced. The failure persisted. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 3,000.
Engine camshaft and lifters failed. Truck is at a Ford dealer. Engine could fail in the middle of the road, causing an accident. This is our eighth vehicle with the same issue taken to a ford dealer in the past year. A little knocking noise started that quickly turned into a loud knocking/rattling noise. No lights came on the truck.
This is one of 4 of my 2021 ford econoline fleet vehicles purchased in 2021 that have had engine failure. I am one of many contractors in my area and others around the country who have had this issue with the same F59 engine. Ford has failed to issue a recall.
Engine camshaft and lifters failed and were inspected by Ford dealer, which corrected the issue by replacing the engine. Engine can failed and truck get stuck in the middle of the road. In the past 6 months its our 4th Ford truck with the same issue and a lot of other Fedex contractors that purchased a Ford truck with the 7.3L engine are reporting the same issue. No warning light was on in this vehicle, just started with a knocking sound that got worse until it got to the dealer and engine had to be replaced

The dealer kayser automotive group (2303 west beltline highway, madison, wi 53713 (608)-271-6000) was contacted for a diagnostic test to be performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle would need to be diagnosed at a dealer. The failure mileage was 15,500.
Vehicle lost power and stopped running while moving at a speed of 55 mph. Vehicle dangerously skid to a complete stop in the middle of a busy highway, unable to drive onto shoulder. Had to be towed into dealership. Vehicle purchased on 06/14/2005 for $58,000, incident happened 07/08/2005, and vehicle is still in shop as of 08/01/2005. The vehicle only had 3,700 miles on it when this happened. Dealership said the torque converter went out. This vehicle was to be used to transport tourist safely to and from our tour location. I purchased this new vehicle for reliability and safety. It is neither reliable nor safe. After viewing this website i found that i am not the only person with a complaint about a defective torque converter, transmission, etc. On a 2005 ford e450 with less than 4,000 miles on it. This is totally unacceptable. *jb

The component that failed was the driveline on our RV. Specifically, the driveline was installed at an incorrect angle, which caused excessive vibrations and loud noises while driving at highway speeds. The improper driveline angle posed a serious safety risk to my family and others on the road. The vibrations were severe enough to affect vehicle handling and stability, especially at higher speeds. There was also concern that the continued stress could lead to mechanical failure or component separation, which could result in loss of control or debris on the roadway. The issue has been confirmed by a Ford RV technician, who verified that the driveline angle was outside manufacturer specifications. The vibrations could be consistently reproduced during test drives. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives at this time. There were no warning lamps or dashboard messages, but noticeable symptoms—including a strong vibration through the floor and loud droning noises—began immediately upon first highway use and persisted until inspection revealed the driveline misalignment.
Transmissions 6r140 have premature failure this is our 6th transmission to go out in our 5 vans, when transmission goes out, the torque converter fails which results in vehicle stalling in road way the vehicle while jerk really hard and give drive whiplash and when vehicle is going up hill when the torque converter fails the van will slam to a stop, stall then start rolling backwards or forwards with no brakes or powersteering. When this happens driver has no breaks or powersteering and most times this has happened the driver cant quickly restart the van to regain powersteering or brakes because the torque converter is stuck and wont allow starter to turn over engine. This vehicle had a new transmission put in by ford january 2022 and it is now august 2022 and this transmission has also failed and presented the same safety situation with stalling and jerking. Ford is set to replace the transmission again and told by dealer these transmissions should be recalled due to this constant failure in all vans and trucks equipped with the 6r140 (ford f-250, f-350 and e-350, e-450).

Driver’s side extended towing mirror (Ford e450 Class C RV) began closing back toward door while on interstate at normal speed. I rolled down window to push it back out, and the arm extension and mirror fell down out of the “elbow joint” basically hanging by the electrical cord. Was able to exit interstate. Could not reinstall it. Had to tuck into cab door and wrap a pants belt around the arm and through the hand grip inside the door in order to get home. Nhtsa recall 17v550: metro worldwide bus vehicle exceeds gross vehicle weight rating (gvwr) when fully loaded. The manufacturer's proposed remedy is to remove seats until the gvwr is in compliance. The manufacturer offered $1,500 per seat removed as compensation. But removing seats dramatically reduces the effectiveness of the bus for its intended purpose. If we knew that the manufacturer couldn't follow through on their promise to provide vehicles meeting required specification, metro worldwide would not have been considered. We believe that the manufacturer was negligent and in violation of the law for improperly building the buses. The dealer, hoglund bus, was also negligent for selling the buses to us that did not comply with nhtsa safety standards. Both the manufacturer and the dealer should bear the responsibility of replacing the buses at no charge. We believe full bus replacement is fair because if we wanted 16, 18 or 20 passenger buses, we could have gotten them cheaper from other manufacturers than the 22 passenger buses metro worldwide promised.

This is a 24' motorhome. 2017 ford e-450/ while driving in regular traffic, if vehicle is traveling 50 mph or more, the steering feels loose and the wheels have a delayed reaction to the steering. The vehicle drifts very strongly to the right or left when another vehicle is passing at a greater speed than i am traveling. Sometimes, throwing my vehicle almost off the road, because when the vehicle i am in drifted to the right, the counter steering doesn't respond immediately, hence it is very delayed. Sometimes it feels like the wheels are off the ground, floating on air or not grabbing the road. This happens mostly on highways, but also on city streets. I brought this problem to the attention of the motorhome dealer, they claim this is normal??? Vehicle only had 1094 miles on it when i took possession and problem occurred immediately when i traveled over 50mph. I requested a refund after the 4th day of ownership but the dealer refused my request. What are my options. Got a recall a couple of days ago, about the crankshaft pulley bolt needing tightening. Please advise when the dealer would have been notified about this problem. Was it before i purchased this product in april 2017. Was it legal for them to sell me this motorhome knowing that there were problems with it.

I am a contractor for fedex home delivery and own the truck in reference. After approx 4900 miles, the truck failed safety inspection by fedex and needed the front tires replaced. Upon investigation, it was found that the tires suffered major/excessive tread wear after just one month on the road. When i addressed utilimaster, the body company, about the issue i was told it was not their responsibility and to contact ford. Ford explained the same and told me to contact utilimaster. Neither party wants to take responsibility for defective tires that i have now spent thousands of dollars replacing, to date. The weight and distribution for the truck/chassis is improper according to a ford engineer. This is dangerous and a resolution must be found before someone is seriously injured or killed. The truck needs to be properly repaired or taken off the road. Utilimaster believes the fix is to keep replacing tires and getting alignments, yet the issue persists. I can not continue to spend valuable resources on an issue that will continue indefinitely until a proper fix is made or the truck is recalled. I keep needing to replace the front tires between 4-6 thousand miles, and they are very good brand name tires, so the tire is not the issue. All receipts, documents and communications are available. I have spoken to numerous other contractors with similar 2012/2013 trucks and they all suffer the same issue(s). *tr
Steering is heavy, (heavy/stiff/steering wheel hard to turn), does not rotate and/or return easily and smoothly. The operator/driver is required to manually assist the return of the steering wheel back to center, does not have return ability to center home position on its own. Safety is #1; heavy/stiff/steering wheel hard to turn raises significant concern with this sunseeker class c motorhome/rv being unsafe, potentially dangerous and/or a hazardous situation when the operator/driver consistently needs to maintain a white knuckle control of the steering wheel. Without assistance or intervention from operator/driver this class c motorhome/rv would continue to turn left or right, and will not return and continue in a straight forward motion. This sunseeker class c motorhome/rv tracks side to side from uneven or grooved payment surfaces causing a wobbling effect. Another effect when a larger vehicle in size passes on the freeway can be disturbing as noted. This class c motorhome/rv is pushed to the right over the white fog line into the break down lane. Operator/driver must use a counter steering measure by turning the steering wheel left into the passing vehicle, then back straight when the vehicle passes. This action requires operator/driver to use constant monitoring visually and physically of the steering wheel in order to maintain a straight/forward line. *tr
