How to read a Ford Freestyle VIN — every digit explained
Every Ford Freestyle carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Ford and the country it was built in (real Ford codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Freestyle.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- USA1F1 · 1F7 · 1FA · 1FB · 1FM · 1FT
- Canada2FA · 2FM · 2FT · 2LM · 2LN · 2ME
- Mexico3FA · 3FB · 3FM · 3FT · 3LN · 3MA
- GermanyWF0 · WF1
- Norway1FL
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Freestyle, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles currently registered in the following states: alaska, colorado, connecticut, delaware, idaho, illinois, indiana, iowa, kansas, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, montana, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, north dakota, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, south dakota, utah, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and wyoming. The side door latch mechanisms may experience water intrusion allowing the latch mechanism to freeze in cold weather.
Risk. As a result, the door latch pawl may not return to the latch position when the door is closed, and the door could open while the vehicle is moving.
Fix. Dealers will install a shield over the front latches; seal a drain hole in the rear window trim molding on the freestyle rear side doors; and apply grease to all front and rear side-door latch mechanisms free of charge. The recall began on november 8, 2006. Owners may contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles, the straps that secure the fuel tank to the vehicle body may break, causing the fuel tank and fuel tank heat shield to drop on the driveshaft (all wheel drive vehicles) or exhaust system (front wheel drive vehicles).
Risk. If this happens, drivers may notice a noise or a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.
Fix. Dealers will replace both fuel tank straps. The recall began on december 1, 2005. Owners may contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.

Car stalls daily three times while driving, dealer cleaned the throttle body still stalls, another dealer cleaned the maf and changed the spark plugs and change cvt transmission fluid, still stalling. Need a new throttle body it is a common defect with ford and very dangerous some one will get killed because of it. My cvt transmission start to slip and needs replacement. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle surged forward and crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The contact mentioned that the passenger seated in the rear seat sustained injuries to the shoulders, but did not require medical attention. A police report was filed. The contact stated that the failure occurred twice before. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was 120,000.
My wife & i were visiting a friends house with my wife driving. She put the van into reverse to leave with her foot on the brake. It suddenly took off at a high rate of speed & would not stop even with both. Feet on the brake. We shot out the driveway at high speed & continued down the roadway until my wife lost control & crashed into a ditch; the only thing that stopped the van was hitting a large rock. This of course caused damage to the passenger side rear quarter panel. My wife suffered a small cut to her calf; i was uninjured. We were very lucky there were no other vehicles in the roadway at that time or it could have been very dangerous !! My wife is so shook up by this incident that she now refuses to drive her van. *tr
Was coming up to a stop light and the car started to accelerate. When i put on brakes, it accelerated more. To avoid hitting 3 cars in front of me, i went over a curb, up a hill and over and embankment. The car finally stopped in the middle of a side street. The impact of coming off the embankment blew 2 tires and totaled out the bottom of my car. The insurance company has totaled the car. As far as the speed of the car, i was doing 35 until the acceleration failed and when i put on the brakes, it went faster. I read on your website where ford was having problems with lunging and this sounds like what happened with my car. Especially when i read from others that have posted there problems with this. I do believe that ford needs to do a recall before someone gets hurt bad. I did go to the er to get checked out but besides seat belt burn, i was fine.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. While parked, the driver placed the vehicle in reverse when it suddenly accelerated backward and crashed into a telephone pole. The driver was not injured. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 153,000.
I purchased my 2007 ff dec of 2010. Three months after purchase, i noticed mild acceleration sometimes without applying my foot to the pedal. It became progressively worse by mid june. So much so that i contacted drivetime where i purchased the car & they gave me some transmission shop to take it to, only be told that it was normal for that particular transmission. Well, by 2012, the uninitiated acceleration has become so bad that a few months ago my car accelerated on its own & ran slam into the back of a lady's car causing more than $2000 worth of damage. I tried to explain to police that my car accelerated abruptly without me doing anything but slightly lifting my foot from the brake (never touching the gas). He didn't give me a ticket but said it was still my fault. My kids call the car a transformer but it is the worse trying to keep it from plunging forward or backward & hitting something or someone! I have to make absolute sure no one is around when i am in shopping lots because i am afraid when the car takes off backwards from parking spaces. I usually have to slam on brakes but then the car shuts off &on comes the engine light. Something has to be done about this dangerous problem with the ford freestyle!!! *tr
We have owned this car for just over a year. For several months now, we have been having problems with the car surging/lunging. It happens without any notice, and you have to slam on the brakes to stop it. Initially, i only noticed the problem when pulling into a parking space. The vehicle would lunge forward. In the last couple of months it has started lunging backward and forward, regardless of how fast i was going (pulling in, backing up, or driving down the highway at a steady speed.) once, the car lunged as i was backing up and hit another car. Minor damage. Not reported. It is starting to happen more often, and the car has also begun dying if it happens whole backing up. Turning the car off and restarting it solves that. I've had to start parking further back in spots because i don't want to hit the car in front of me. This has indirectly caused cosmetic damage (coming out of a store twice i've noticed scrapes that look like someone backed into me.) i don't understand how this can be such a widely reported and potentially dangerous problem without a recall or even acknowledgement of the issue (if you call ford.) my car has lunged forward at red lights and stop signs toward oncoming traffic, as well as driveways with children nearby. It may only be a few feet, but even that can be deadly considering when the problem occurs most. *tr
We had noticed that the car would surge from time to time at lower speeds. I found some information on the wed that indicated that nhtsa was investigating a lunging problem. I took that information to the dealership and was sure that they would repair because of the safety issues. I found that they would not, but they have a tsb 11-10-21 for the problem that appears to be like what we are experiencing. I am a professor in the automotive engineering technology department at minnesota state university, mankato and this is a definite safety issue. Yesterday while hooking up a trailer, the car lunged in reverse.....my wife was trying to hook up a trailer with someone between the car and trailer. No one was injured, but it is a safety problem. *tr
Our car was quite new. My daughters and i were in the car at a stop light. Someone was in front of me at the time and they were making a right hand turn. When i was slightly rolling forward i applied pressure to the brake and my car jumped or lunged forward-causing an accident with 4 kids and 2 adults involved. This is the first of many incidents with my car proactively moving. *tr
I was pulling into a parking space when the car lunged and hit the concrete wall in front of me. It had been doing this mildly for a couple of days. During this event, the speed was unexpected and dangerous. *tr

We were at a stand still in traffic leading to the off ramp, a vehicle came speeding down the on ramp and by his own admission was not paying attention. He then rammed into the back of our vehicle and hit us so hard that it triggered a multi car crash, 6 vehicles in all. During repairs of the vehicle we were told that the engine was experiencing idle surge. It was also noted that this was not due to the vehicle accident. We paid out of pocket some 1,700.00 and we continue to have the same issues. The ford dealership has not and will not correct the problem. Ford is responsible for this repair and i would like to see some action taken on their part. I called ford corporate office and was told despite my vehicle being included in the 2005-2007 recall my particular vin number is not included in that lot. Not good customer service. *tr
While vehicle was pulling into garage the vehicle surged forward striking and pinning a person between the vehicle and brick wall. Person recieved injuries to both legs requiring medical treatment. This vehicle has surged ever since we purchased it. Ford has told us repeated times that it's not a recall problem because it's not a safety problem.
While going about 75mph on interstate i459, my ford freestyle slowed down according to the driver behind me and i was rear ended in heavy traffic. This may have been due to transmission problems.
After starting the car in my driveway, i heard a loud 'helicopter sound' under the hood (to which i have come to find out was the transmission (cvt)). When i put the car into reverse, it violently raced forward, hitting the brick wall of my house. I have pushed it a few feet back and have not restarted the car for fear of this happening again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. When starting the vehicle and shifting into reverse or drive at 2 mph, the vehicle would lunge forward or backwards as the brake pedal was depressed. In addition, the check engine and the wrench warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 190,000.

I drive a 2007 ford freestyle, and my car lunges while my foot is slightly on the brakes. I cannot have my air-conditioning on while i'm on a stand still and my key ignition is lose and the car light comes on or the car will just stop. I told it to the dealership and all they say is pay for a diagnostic and get it fixed! This car is not safe to drive and i'm scared to continue to drive it on long road trip with my precious cargo. *tr
The engine surges when idling as well as lurches forward (while in drive thru lane) and it lurches in reverse. It is a major concern when parking and backing out of said location. It has already caused me to hit a concrete pillar in the parking garage! *tr
Vehicle speed decelerated and wrench light came on took to ford dealership (on vacation trip) had to leave the vehicle as they said needed new throttle body----at approx. 103,767 mi. Approx 107,178 miles speed decelerated on trip and wrench light came on.when turn the vehicle off wrench light goes off and desired speed can be resumed. Took to ford dealer and said they could put in new "brain" or new transmission. Took vehicle to mechanic for second opinion and they said it was transmission and suggested taking to transmission specialist. Transmission specialist agreed transmission had to be replaced.the vehicle was taken out several times by these mechanics and verified that it was shifting okay and okay to drive. Left the mechanic place of business and was sitting stopped at a traffic signal with foot on brake pedal and vehicle lurched forward and rammed the car in front of the vehicle. Looking for another vehicle and so scared to drive this anywhere. *tr
My wife was coming home from work, she went to park the car outside in front of our porch where she normally parks at. She still had her foot on the brake and was getting ready to switch gears when the car accelerated and went over our flowerpot and into my porch braking a few boards and scratching the front of my car. This is not the first time it has accelerated on us while not suppose to. When i bought the car in august 2011 we took it to myrtle beach for a week, while in myrtle beach the car would try to take off and/or die while at low speeds with the a/c on. The problem almost caused us to hit a pedestrian. This car is very unsafe, and really needs the problem fixed. *tr

While pulling in to park, with foot off the gas pedal and applying brake to stop, my vehicle rpms surged. I had to sharply apply additional brake, however my vehicle struck a bollard. Today's episode is another in a long string of sudden rpm surge events dating back to when the vehicle was newly purchased. I have had the vehicle checked by our local ford/lincoln dealership three times, with no corrective action taken. We have had to deal with this unsafe condition and have not received any assistance from ford. *tt
Several times my vehicle surges forward when moving at slow speeds or braking. This has happened while driving forward and reverse. More noticeable when the a/c is on. Even when my foot is on the brake . I can hear the engine revving when this is happening - even though my foot is on the brake.it also loses power on the freeway and becomes very sluggish in acceleration.the vehicle would lose power unexpectedly when driving 10 mph and up. Also i had a minor accident, the vehicle accelerated by itself and i hit a wall in my garage. Also, it would not go forward and when put in reverse it would accelerate--this happened in the middle of traffic during rush hour. We finally took it to the dealer to have it looked at, they told us it was the throttle body and our master tech guarantee did not cover the expense. All they did was clean the throttle up (is expected to have more problems later) because the cost was over $700 and we cannot afford it at the time. So, after we took it out of the shop the car is now only accelerating to no more than 4000 rpms.
Was driving to work car picked up speed to where the brakes would not stop then the car just went off. *tr
Our freestyle has a repeated tendency to surge forward from stop with no application of the accelerator pedal. Last year when we took it in to the dealership they said they could find no problems with the car. The problem has since gotten repeatedly worse and we have surged into other cars when trying to leave a parking space. This problem is not consistent, but it occurs on a regular basis; several times a week. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph the vehicle stalled. Upon restart, the vehicle operated as normal. A check engine light was also illuminating on the instrument panel upon restart. The contact also stated that the vehicle was experiencing a recurring failure in which it would momentarily surge forward. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000. Updated 08/01/11*lj the consumer stated he had an accident last year in a private parking lot. The consumer stated the vehicle surged when it was placed into gear. When i am driving my car with the air conditioner running, the transmission will surge when the car is at a stop, causing the car to lunge forward. Last summer i brought the car to the dealer to have them look into it and they said it is just due to the cvt transmission and the way it is tuned. They told me it was just characteristic of this type of engine. There was nothing that needed to be fixed. This happens every time the air is running. Most recently, my car lunged into another car in line at a red light causing rear end damage. *tr
Bought this car used 2 years ago. Car started making a loud noise, but when put in drive, it quiets a little. Not running well at all. Took it to get it looked at, 1st replaced a bad water pump (almost 700) and then was told it's the transmission. They want $6k for, which i don't have. I still owe $6k on the car. So, i am basically stuck w a car that doesn't work and i can't sell or trade in, nor can i afford to at this point. *tr
Air conditioning does not work when driving under 35 mph or especially when at an idle. Air is not cool at all. Then when i speed up, i have air again although occasionally car will start to die and dash lights up and then it surges and is fine again when going down the highway at higher speeds. This is mostly when it is hot outside. When cool or raining, the problem is better. *tr
I was backing my wife's car in and it started accelerating without me pressing the gas, actually my foot was on the brake thank goodness. We promptly took vehicle to ford dealership and they said it was the throttle body, and that it needed to be replaced, and of course it was supposedly not under warranty. Then they charged me $900 to fix it.i have since done lots of research online as well as in person and have come to the realization that there are thousands upon thousands of this same complaint for the 2005-2007 ford freestyle. I have also found that almost everyone who has had a failed throttle body has had multiple failed throttle body's as well as a/c compressor failure. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. While stopped at a light, the contact noticed that the defroster stopped emitting hot air and the windshield would not defrost. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The technician replaced the thermostat, heater core, and water pump. The failure continued after the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the failure was a characteristic of the vehicle and there was nothing they could do to assist. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 39,688. Updated 06/26/12 *bf

My car is cutting off when i drive it. It also races when i shift the gears. And when i turn the ac and shift the gears the car accelerates. My car has not been driven since may 2012. I've had it checked out by a car dealership repair shop and they couldn't find out what the problem is. *tr

Parked in parking garage. When backing up, car lurched and ran into another vehicle that was backing up. I was in reverse when the other car backed up. Foot on brake and car lurched into other car. No personal injuries than goodness. *tr since that time, it has lurched in both forward and reverse. I originally thought that somehow my foot hit the gas pedal and could not figure out how i was doing this. I also thought that maybe the floor mat had somehow bound the gas pedal, but, i checked and it is not the problem. Sensor replaced on car as mechanic thought that this might be causing the problem. It was fine after that for about 1,500 miles and problem has started again. The problem seems to be made worse if the temperature is over 90 outside or if the car is sitting and idling or operating at low speeds. I have been lucky that no other property damage and/or personal injuries.
I was sold a vehicle without being told that there was a recall. Instead he told me it was just some rattling that was coming from something loose and not important. Its rattling like crazy under my car. I looked up recalls for it and there is an important recall that needs to be fixed on it. Please. It can harm my newborn child and melt wires and is gonna cost so much money that i don't have to fix it. This is my only car. Please. Its a 2005 ford freestyle and there is a recall for it on exactly what its been doing. Everytime i drive it feels like it's gonna fall apart and inside the cab is getting hott and harmful fumes are coming into the cab. Its dangerous. The heat shield is broken i guess.
The car stops randomly at times and sometimes will not even startup. Check engine light is on and i recently hit someone in front of me due to jerking or lerching while at a stop light. Very dangerous
Where to begin.... The brakes are shot. Don't work at all. During the summer and fall the car will randomly go into "failsafe mode" and just stop. It has to be turned completely off for several minutes before attempting to turn back on and will generally do this up to 8 times before i just shut it off and leave it until the next day. During these months it will also get a mind of it's own and just leap forward. I have to stop 2 car lengths behind any car in front of me when i'm coming to a stop, otherwise it will lunge forward (even though i have my foot firmly applied on the brake) and hit the car in front of me. Oh, and will jump curbs, hit garage doors, all that good stuff too when it gets this surge. Then, during the winter months the door latch gets stuck and the car doors are literally frozen open. I can't drive anywhere with two small children and car doors that won't shut. Oh, and my vehicle wasn't included in the recall so i can't get it fixed. Oh and did i mention the brake system doesn't work? Like won't hold brake fluid, air is all in the lines, and hardly no brakes. Have you ever tried driving with no brakes?? It sucks! And forget driving on the highway with my kids in this car. I don't trust it at all!! *js
My freestyle surges and lunges forward and backwards. I hit a car while trying to back up and park because the car surged and accelerated into reverse. This is the second time that i have had this problem in 2 years and needed to replace the throttle body. I almost hit people in a parking lot because of the sudden surge and acceleration. This is extremely unsafe and unpredictable. Needs to be recalled! Engine mount was also cracked and needed to be repaired as in many of the other cases in the class action lawsuit. *tr

My 2006 ford freestyle has had a surging problem at low speeds since we bought it with 15000 miles on it in 2006. Even with your foot on the brake and not on the accelerator the care accelerates on its own in forward and reverse. We took the car to the ford dealer in tucson and they fixed the problem by replacing the throttle body for 1000.00 at our expense. On one occasion may 1 2010 the car surged forward hitting our garage causing damage to the car. There should be a recall on this car. *tr
I have a 2006 ford freestyle that lunges when you put it in gear. It does it all the time. Its worse when the air cond. Is on. I had an accident in a parking lot. I have quit driving the car till i can afford to take in to a dealer. From what i've read this is a common problem with freestyles. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford freestyle. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked with the engine running when the vehicle exhibited a small explosion. Immediately, gasoline fuel fumes entered into the vehicle cabin. The contact exited the vehicle and found that fuel was leaking from the front passenger side. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the contact was advised that the fuel clip had fractured. The entire fuel line had to be replaced. The failure mileage was 135,336 and the current mileage was 135,400.
I was parked with the car in park. I went to put the car in the garage. I had to turn it around first. I put car in drive and drove forward a little. Stopped put in reverse, drove backwards a little then put back in drive and just as i was stopping car lurched forward, hitting my deep freezer. The car has acted like it wanted to go forward before when i put on the brakes lightly. This has happened about 4 times but, today was the worst. *tr
Unknown reason: on dec.28 2016 i@ 1535 i was driving on interstate #30 in arkansas. I was driving @ a speed of 70 mph when all the power went off in my car. I was unable to turn on flashers or restart car. Behind me was a 18 wheeler and on my right side was a car. I immediately began to lose speed. It just so happened that the other drivers noticed i was in trouble. Both drivers put their hazard lights on and slowed traffic enabling me to steer the car ( with no power) to the shoulder. I put the car in park turned the radio and heater off and tried to restart it. It did restart but i left the radio and heater off. I was 34.1 mi from home. Started to experience engine surge problem that is apparently pretty common. Mostly occurs when accelerating from stopped position. Also check engine light came on. Checked code at napa store. P0109 indicating fuel rail pressure sensor. Local mechanic claimed it to be a fuel filter problem. Had mechanic change filter, problem resolved for very short time period. About month later same problem and engine code. Replaced fuel sensor myself. Problem returned 2 days later without engine code. From my research on this site and others found out about customer satisfaction program 12n03. Called local dealer to look into having vehicle checked. Was informed by service operator that my vin does not qualify but they would let me pay $150.00 dollars to check out problem. I am thinking i will exercise my free will to get rid of this vehicle for a kia or hyundai model that i can trust. *tr

After starting the 2007 ford freestyle it idols about 1000rpms. Upon putting it into drive or reverse when you lift off the brake the car will rev up the engine to about 2000rpms and speed forward or backward. This rev of the engine last approximately 1 second and then the car returns to normal idol speed. This creates a dangerous situation in which if you do not anticipate the acceleration you could have an accident.

*tr
Summary: i was putting gas in my car, as i entered the car after fueling, i was talking to my mother for a moment, and as i was about to place the key in the ignition, there was black smoke coming from the passenger mirror. I got out and ran over, and saw flames. I ripped the black cover with the mirror off, saw that there was an electrical fire. Burning myself, i put the fire out in time to keep it from getting out of control. With the fire safely out, i saw that it was from the led courtesy light assembly at the bottom of the passenger side mirror. It was completely melted and burned. I removed the part, (as well as the one from the driver side for safe measure), and took them to my local ford dealership so they could report it as a faulty part. The part is the wagner part 71077. According to the driver side (i could not read the passenger side to see if it has the same part number, or if it is different for right and left.) the wire assembly, was burned near the base of the wires where they enter the assembly. Had i not been there to put out the fire, my car would have burnt to the ground!!! My hand is recovering at this time. *tr updated 09/19/13*lj the consumer sold the vehicle, a year ago. Car accelerating when ac in on and after ac has been of after that 1 day use. Ac not working property. Sensor issues. Electrical issues, example window no longer rolls down. Taken it to different mechanics but they can't find the problem. Know it's turning off all in a sudden and having issues with the car brakes to kick in. Had that check but they said everything is good, brakes and etc.... Have already put around $5,000 and still not getting it to work safely. Also stearing wheel gets stuck as if you can't turn the wheels on the car and then turns of after seconds.
We went out to the garage to get in the car to leave. I opened the back of the car to put a bag in. My daughter went to the passenger side to get in and the mirror was smoking. We went to get a fire extinguisher but it burned out on its own. There was smoke and flames coming from behind the mirror glass. I unplugged the mirror to keep it from burning again. Now my windows don't work.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 ford freestyle. While the vehicle was parked, the contact discovered smoke coming from the passenger side mirror without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who removed the fuse on the passenger side mirror. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 128,900.
After driving home, approximately 10 miles and speeds up to 50mph, i noticed smoke coming from the passenger side mirror. The smoke lasted a few minutes and then stopped on its own. Not sure if this information is pertinent or not, but it had been raining and the dvd player was playing during the trip. *tr
I unlocked my car to load the back. I noticed smoke coming from the passenger side mirror. There was a small fire which i put out with water. Now my radio and power windows will not work and the fuse blows when we tried to replace (2x). I have not yet taken it in since it is the weekend, but i am not happy about a random fire that may have burned the entire vehicle if not noticed. *tr

At the beginning of february, my kids wanted to watch a dvd in the car while i was cleaning the driveway. I put the keys in the ignition (i did not start the engine) for the dvd to work, put on the dvd and start cleaning the driveway. Few minutes later i have seen a big smoke coming from the outside passenger side mirror. I have checked the mirror and it was in flames. I took the kids out of the car, took the keys out of ignition, remove the back cover of the mirror and put out the fire which was coming from a bundle of wires inside the mirror assembly.

I have three complaints regarding my vehicle. I purchased a 2006 freestyle in june of 2006. In october 2006 my son and i were involved in an accident. There was extensive front end damage resulting in over $10,000 in repairs. The car jumped over two ravines, both times severely impacting the ground. Almost the entire front part of the car had to be replaced, including the radiators, grill, bumper, etc. The air bags did not deploy. Also, i have had to have the tires replaced two times making the latest the third set of tires on this vehicle. The set of tires i just had replaced were 60,000 mile continental touring tires. They had uneven, choppy, wear and were approximately 8 months old. I am on the second set of brakes, both front and rear and have had the rear rotors replaced.. The vehicle currently has approximately 39,000 miles on it. The premature, uneven tire wear and the brake wear are excessive compared to any other vehicle i have ever owned. I feel very fortunate that the accident we were involved did not result in bodily injury for either me or my 22 year old son. *tr
I was driving my infant son home from the hospital after cardiovascular surgery. It was a light drizzle following a period of heavy rain. The roads were wet but there was no standing water. Cars were braking in front of me to make a left hand turn. I applied my brakes, the pedal was up, but there were no brakes. The vehicle did not even begin to stop. I pushed them again and again and there was still no braking of the vehicle causing a rear end collision with the car in front of me who rear ended the car in front of him. Note: the airbags never deployed! I had to take my infant back to the hospital via ambulance to have him checked out because of the prior surgery. The dealership said the car did not throw any codes and that there was no way to test the anti-lock brakes and no way to prove that they failed. I am a very cautious driver, always leave plenty of space to stop between me and the cars in front of me. I have never had an accident or moving violation, and yet the response that i received from the dealership was "well the front ends are made to collapse in the event of an accident".. That is not the issue. The accident should never have happened because the vehicle should have stopped. There was more than enough space to stop, i was applying the brakes, and did so multiple times to try to get them to work (so obviously i had plenty of space to stop) and yet the car would not even slow down. A vehicle should stop when you apply the brakes, anti-lock mode or not! Someone could have been killed and one of those people could have been my infant son!!!!! *tr
While driving in heavy traffic with snow and slushy streets, the traffic ahead of me stopped. I applied the brakes and the abs activated for about 1 second and then i had no brakes at all. No matter how hard i pushed the brake pedal, there was no abs activity and no brakes. Fortunately i was only going about 5 mph. I struck the vehicle in front of me. It had no damage but i had a broken bumper cover ($1300 to repair). I took the vehicle to the dealer i bought it from to have the abs and brakes checked. They found nothing wrong. I wrote a letter to ford, explaining what happened. They said they were forwarding my letter to their engineering department for evaluation. I have heard nothing from them yet. *tr
2007 ford freestyle. Consumer writes in regards to brake hose leak. *ld the consumer stated while driving the brakes failed, nearly causing a crash. It was determined that a breakline hose connected to the abs ruptured. The vehicle was repaired.*js
From the 1st day i leased the vehicle from progressive auto, i could hear it raving high, steering wheel really heavy, brakes seemed strange and heavy to move. But the sales man kept telling and showing me a report that the vehicle is fine, and kept saying, its the type of engine in the vehicle (cvt) that's why it all seems strange. I kept going back to them advising them that i know something is wrong, but they kept saying they cannot find anything wrong. Finally i took it to a ford dealership, and they advised me it was a transmission, brakes and suspension problem. And this was not even 2 months down the road. I was very upset and wanted to return the vehicle. So they decided to claim to fix the transmission by installing a used one. I had to get the other things fixed myself. Not even a year and some later, i have to replace the transmission again. Before the transmission completely died, as i was driving it started to stall to a point i almost got into a car accident with kids in the back, as the car kept jerking and i didn't know what was happening.this was the worst vehicle i have ever purchased in my life time. And the best part, is one one wants to take ownership of the problem with the vehicle that seems to be very very common. I wish the problems were easily diagnosed when first happening, and it would have saved me alot of headaches. I am usually a import vehicle individual, but i choose ford as i heard great things about them. But now i will never buy a ford again as it has been the worst experience i have had. I need over $3000 to fix the transmission and the vehicle is not even worth that much!
