Air Bags:frontal16V247000

What's wrong. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 Ford Flex, 2008 and 2010-2012 Ford Taurus, 2008-2009 Ford Taurus X, 2008 Mercury Sable, 2009 and 2011 Lincoln MKS vehicles. The driver frontal air bag may improperly inflate during second-stage deployment in the event of a high speed crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Risk. An improperly inflated air bag increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Fix. Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the driver's frontal air bag module, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on June 13, 2016. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16C06.

2009 Taurus X

While pulling into parking space at very low speed with right foot on brake petal, car accelerated up and lurched forward hitting parked vehicle in front. Had to apply brake harder to get vehicle in park to stop acceleration. *tr

2009 Taurus X

Put car in drive went forward like a jet hit basketball hoop was cemented in ground. *tr

2009 Taurus X

Have a small power steering leak that turned out to be a racket pinion issue. I've talked to a few people with the same car and they have also had the same issue. Small leak in the same area that turned out to be the racket pinion needing replaced. You can really see the leak when parked.

2009 Taurus X

While turning into traffic, the car suddenly decelerates as if someone is putting on the brakes, or more like the car is dropped into the lowest gear possible. After the car is brought to a complete stop it resumes normal operations. This happened three or four times. The dealer couldn't find the problem. I pointed out a service bulletin in reference to this problem but since performing the software update it has happened again. The car literally grinds to a stop, or one out two miles an hour, in the middle of traffic almost causing an accident or serious injury. *tr

2008 Taurus X

I bought this vehicle used from a lot. It had 2 previous owners and came with all the service history. I first noticed the vehicle seemed like it didn’t want to go into overdrive . It would get to about 70 mph which would have the rpm’s at 3k! The 2nd time or so that we got it to these speeds (on interstate) the vehicle suddenly clunked , steering wheel jerked , vehicle lost power - I had my 2 children in the vehicle and I was pregnant. We had to pull over immediately . After sitting side the road for a few , it crunk up and we rode out . Only for it to happen 2 more times. And this is not the only thing effected by this . Not long after I got it , I started noticing a hard shift / clunk / slam when going into gear and especially when the vehicle has just tried to downshift and I pressed the gas again . Due to this , I’m unable to tell when and if we can pull out into traffic and such. I must time it good in order to not risk getting T boned etc. Also, with 3 kids in tow , a vehicle slamming their necks and heads is dangerous and scary. So , I’ve had some work done on . Trying to help my issue. Apparently my issue is the same as a lot of others . Which is an intermittent issue . And apparently no matter if all the passed recalls were addressed. Or if the owners of the vehicle serviced it often and currant . Or if the pcm was reflashed , replaced etc - the Ford Taurus X will continue to have these issues . And these issues seem to be the same issues that were addressed in the ford recall in 2020 ( which didn’t include the Taurus X) and previous recalls . This drivertrain transmission has been an issue for the Taurus X since forever . Please check into this. Last thing we need is whiplash or life flights from this .

2008 Taurus X

Transmission stuck in high gear while in motion. Can't accelerate from stop to maintain speed. Power cycle fixed. Intermittent issue.

2008 Taurus X

Had to shell out $528.06 to replace both the 'input & output shift senors' in the vehicle. Repair involved removing the valve body on the transmission for access. Majority of the cost involve the labor to reach this area on trans. A month earlier trans locked up in low gear, dash lights were flashing? Shut off engine & restarted. Ran ok then. Safety issue! Recall is in order!

2008 Taurus X

Transmission is slipping and wont change gears

2008 Taurus X

When vehicle gets between 40-45 mph, will not gear up properly and will not run correctly. Only does this intermittently, and you have to stop the car, unhook battery cable, give it a minute, hook it back up and it will run fine until the next time it does it- which could be days, weeks, even months.

2008 Taurus X

While stopped at a traffic light the vehicle just took off and i couldn't get car to stop until i put it in neutral while applying the break. Mechanic could not find a reason for this and it doesn't happen all the time .since other people have had the same or similar problem seems like a recall problem to me. Car tries to drive itself!!!

Steering 27% 44 Read

Suddenly wouldn't turn to the right when stopped, got increasing difficult from stopped position. The faster the vehicle would go the more the steering would loosen up. Makes intersections very dangerous and impossible to maneuver. Pulled shoulder muscle trying to steer out of the intersection. *tr

2008 Taurus X

Loss of steering wrecked 2 tires. *tr

2009 Taurus X

Steering suddenly becomes very difficult like the power steering failed. It intermittently has power assist and the fluid level is good. I was told this a well known problem that is more common in the 2008 model. Diagnosis indicated the rack and pinion and/or gearbox is bad. It's a very dangerous situation when it suddenly cannot be controlled. The first time, i was at an intersection making a left turn going 15 mph when i was completing the turn, the steering wheel became extremely difficult to straighten out direction of travel forcing me brake hard to prevent going into head-on traffic until i could force the wheel back. Now, it has limited intermittent power assist going through the full steering range.

2008 Taurus X

Driving down the road straight, our car made a pop sound and suddenly lurched and steering was impaired. Car was taken to the nearest dealership where they found the engine cradle/front sub frame had rusted through internally causing the sway bar to break away and it had perforated around the mount for the control arm. We were extremely fortunate the control arm didn't completely drop out causing an accident. Failure is almost identical to the ford escape subframe recall. Dealer technician said he has replaced a lot of these engine cradles in the taurus x's for the same failure (some worse than ours, completely rusted in half etc.). Lack of sufficient paint inside of the cradles causing premature failure is a major safety concern. I would not be surprised if there are accidents reported for this concern. I have requested the engine cradle from the dealership after it is removed for photographic evidence.

2008 Taurus X

I was driving home on city streets when the power steering went out. Car became almost impossible to turn, even using all my strength. I could not have reacted to any obstacle that suddenly presented itself, and i could hardly make turns, even at very low speeds. It was a dangerous situation.

2008 Taurus X

Steer hard right and left at slow speed in city driving. At first it steers hard then smooth and you can over steer . The steering rack has been replaced & steering pump has been replaced as well. Have not fixed the problem.getting worse

2008 Taurus X

2008 ford taurus x 135000 miles vehicle started being difficult to turn either way. My wife and 4 kids were almost in an accident because of it. All fluid levels were good. Changed out the rack and pinion and the power steering pump and the problem is still occurring. It occurs mostly at low speeds, but also occurs at higher speeds. This is obviously a huge issue because there are multiple reports online of other people having the same issue. We obviously need to be able to steer to drive and also quickly avoid any hazards on the road and we can't do that because of this issue.

2008 Taurus X

Power steering has now failed twice once in 2012 and now in 2017. Complete rack & pinion was replaced in 2012 with 34800 miles, 2nd failure is now 1/22/2017 at 108000 miles. Now replacing steering rack and return line. 1st case exiting highway at 70 mph could not turn wheel or turn right. Could only make left turns. 2nd case leaking fluid and making noise while driving around town. 1st was very scary, thought we would crashing exiting express way. Call ford cs and they would not do anything due to 4 years but less than 360000 miles. 2nd was less scary but did not have control of vehicle and took 5 days to get service by a local repair shop, to far to drive to a ford dealer. Not very happy with this happening twice and very expensive over $3000 out of pocket expenses for this vehicle. *tr

The ford taurus x has 57,945 miles on it. Two times while driving the vehicle on the interstate highway the dash showed all zeros and the car lost power. The check engine light came on. The car exhibited slow acceleration and unusual shifting. I took it and had the obd code read. The code indicated that it was a speed sensor in the transmission (p720). The code was reset and the car is currently being driven. It happened twice within a two-week period. I own two 2008 ford taurus and it happened on the same day to both of them. I will be filing incident information on the other vehicle too.

After this happening sevral times and phone calls to the dealer and then taking the car into the dealer.the ford dealer stated they have seen this alot and the problem was in the throddel body. However, i had to still pay $700.00 to have their known problem fixed. Car mileage 113,000.

Was notifed this week by dealer that transmission needs replaced, but because every time you turn off the car the codes reset. Ford motor company and the dealer do not want to assist in the repairs of over $4500.00. Bought extended warranty to 75,000 miles and problem first documented on there forms was at 60,000 miles. While driving the car would down shift and jerk. Happened several time and each time took to dealer they could not find a problem. On several occasions the car would not go in reverse but after turning car off and restarting it would.

Vehicle had been parked and turned off for at least 4 hours. A fire was reported to my son who borrowed it for work. He used a fire extinguisher until the local fire department arrived. The fd disconnected the battery and put out the remaining fire. In their report stated the fire was electrical and started under the front dash. The middle to the passenger side of the dash is complete destroyed and melted. Local ford dealer, byerly ford estimated $4600 of damage. Also stated that the fire was too intense and cause so much heat damage that a cause could not be determined. Paint on hood in bubbling and peeling in front near the grill. Took to two ford dealerships and they would not cover the repair because no service bulletin or recall. I have seen numerous vehicles like mine of the road with the same paint issue. This is a paint shop issue at ford chicago assembly where this car was built. *js

Paint is bubbling and peeling off the hood of the car both at the front and at the windshield. I am the original owner of this 2008 ford taurus x limited. The metal underneath the peeling paint does not appear to be rusted. This seems to be an aluminum corrosion issue. Ford has told me both at the corporate and dealer level that they do not have a recall or service bulletin related to this problem. They did tell me to save my receipts incase they decide to cover the repair. *tr

Pulling out of gravel parking lot/driveway the brakes have locked up and the pedal is very hard. Goes away fairly fast and drives ok. Has happened three times up to now. Could cause an accident in high traffic area. I would appreciate any info on possible reasons for this??? *tr

T this low mileage. Most people who have this problem would think the rear brakes wore out not realizing that the failed calipers caused the problem.ford should take responsibility for their defective rear brake calipers. This is my and my extended families last ford product because of ford's lack of responsibility. *tr

The gas pedal and brake pedal are able to be applied simultaneously causing near accidents. The cause seems to be because of the closeness of the brake and gas pedals both horizontally and vertically. Since ownership of this vehicle, this situation has occurred 4 times. This vehicle is equipped with electrically adjusted pedals which brings the pedals too close in proximity to each other causing these near accidents because the foot unintentionally is able to apply pressure to both brake and gas pedals.this situation i believe is caused through the engineering of the vehicle and the cost to correct this problem should be born by ford motor company. *tr

On three different occasions when either pulling out from gravel or wet pavement the esc will apply the anti-lock brakes. The car is in no way skidding or otherwise out of control in any way. It presents a big safety concern. As we pulled out onto the main road the cars anti-lock brakes were being applied while we were trying to drive down the road. We had to try to get the car to the side of the road in order to get out of the way of traffic coming up behind us. The esc light flashes during these episodes. I made an appointment with the local ford dealer twice and they found nothing wrong with the car. I want to make it clear that the brakes come on after the turn has been made and the car is now straight and steady. Each time this has happened it was at low speeds. *tr

Ford customer care denying any responsibility for this issue, even with so many owner reports of the same issue. There is clearly some sort of design or engineering flaw with the rear brakes on these vehicles, and ford must be compelled to issue a recall or at the very least agree to cover rear brake replacement under warranty. *tr

Front subframe (also referred to as K-frame, engine cradle, crossmember) rusted through forming large holes in two locations which could cause failure of the front subframe during operation. Locations mirror each other, are at the forward-facing side of the cross member just in from the point where the crossmember connects to the side beams of the K-Frame. Holes formed at ~100,000 miles. The subframe overall has moderate rust and metal is fully intact. Rest of the vehicle has minimal corrosion. Ford discontinued the part and has no remaining inventory. No aftermarket part exists. Part number is: 9F9Z-5C145-A Prior part numbers: 8A4Z-5C145-B, 8A4Z-5C145-D

Hood released while driving at 35 mph a total of 3 times. Computer reported a tire sensor inflation issues while driving. Air pressure was fine. Popping, loud grinding noise while driving has returned even after it was serviced due to the drivetrain and transmission. Sounds and feels like something is loose while driving at 45 mph in the suspension, even though we were told that is normal for that vehicle. While turning out from a parking lot, the vehicle sounded and felt like the entire undercarriage had fallen on the ground while we were driving forward. It was very difficult to drive the car forward. We were forced to drive the back roads back to the dealership. The driver side power window goes down while attempting to raise the window. The passenger side power mirror grinds and pops while moving it. *tr

I was driving on a hilly country road at the rate of 40 to 45 miles an hour. As i was coming down an incline, i lost control of the back of the vehicle. The tail end was swaying from side to side like i was driving on ice. As i decelerated and tried to find a safe place to pull off the road, the steering wheel pulled completely to the right while the tail end of the car continued to sway from side to side. Once i was able to stop the car, i could see the part that was holding the rear passenger tire to the frame hanging on the ground. *tr

Car has a tendancy to drift right or left while traveling. More pronunced drift while stopping. Excessive tire wear. Dealer inspection indicates gears in gear box are loose and gear box needs replacing and vehicle needs alignment. Second set of front tires are worn down to wear bar after only 13,000 miles. Cost for gear box replacement and four wheel alignment is $900. Dealer stated no recalls or service bulletins for steering/gear problem. *tr

The tires were rotated as recommended but that did not resolve the problem. The consumer was informed that pirelli tires were known to wear unevenly and they would check the alignment. After the alignment, the noise was reduced to about 50%. That lasted 6 months and then the noise returned to its original loudness. The consumer was told to either live with the noise or replace all four tires at his expense. *jb

The transmission of our 2008 ford taurus x (49k miles) went into fail-safe mode on 6/21/2010 and was immediately taken to team ford. There was also a problem with the parking brake pedal working intermittently so we asked that this problem also be fixed while the vehicle was in their shop. The service manage said that they were backed up on the transmission (8 of them - not good) and would be a while so they would take care of the parking brake first. The next day, 6/22/2010, i received a call telling me that while the vehicle was raised up on the rack to inspect the rear end, the service tech noted that there was uneven wear on the pass. Side rear tire and then noticed that the bracket on the subframe attaching the lower control arm was broken (a crack that had pulled apart). I was informed that our extended warranty would not cover the broken sub-frame and bracket, a $2500 part, while my position is that this is covered as it is a "link". I then went and inspected the vehicle and noticed that there was corrosion in the crack. We have only owned the vehicle for 10 months as we bought it used from guadin ford when it had just 37,560 miles on it on 8/6/2009. It was also a ford certified used vehicle. There is no way that much corrosion could have happened to weaken the bracket in under 10 months, fail partially, and have the tire noticeable wear unevenly. We were also told that this "damage" was from "mis-use" of the vehicle. Funny thing is, the bracket was the only "damage". Not even scratches or scrapes, or, at the very least, a flat tire or wheel damage from a major impact that would have been necessary to break a high strength suspension part. It had to be defective and nobody either caught it or admitted catching it. There are more spots of corrosion on this part which leads me to believe that there was either defective rustproofing or completely inappropriate type of steel used to manufacture this part. *tr

I was driving approx. 75 mph down the interstate and lost control of my 2008 taurus x. My vehicle left the road several times, almost overturned before i was able to get it stopped. A witness said my car was going sideways and he could not believe it didn't roll. The left lower control arm broke off of the sub frame. Ford motor company had an engineer look at the vehicle as they said this has never happened before and wanted to make sure that i had not hit anything. Ford has to been cooperative. I wanted to talk to the engineer or someone from ford because i'm now afraid to drive this car. If this had happened near a steep embankment or heavy traffic, we would have been seriously injured or killed. I had my 2yr old granddaughter with me. If there are more incidents, there should be a recall. They are trucking in new parts and ford motor co. Wants the old part. *tr

Submitted claim to ford motor company and was informed there was no manufacturer or design issue and would not proceed with any action. Car was serviced regularly and had no mechanical issues. *tr

We are original owners on a 2008 ford taurus x with 143000 miles on it. The transmission has been shuttering and shifting roughly for the past 30000 miles or so. Recently my wife was driving at low speed when several warning lights on the dash went off, the miles until empty reading dropped to 0 (3/4 tank of gas remained), and the vehicle would rev but only go 2-3 mph. I entered some of these symptoms into google and found many message board enteries referencing this issue. What concerns me is ford does not to appear to fix the issue short of replacing the transmission ($4000).

Backing out of driveway- i noticed that steering column was not locked prior to inserting key. Inserted key, turned to start and no response from ignition. Kept turning steering column and decided to engage transmission from park to drive several times. I returned to park-ing the car and removed the key. Initially, steering column was not locked, then i turned the steering wheel several times and then the column locked. Turned the key and the ignition hesitated- the dials were jumping. After several seconds the engine turned over and dials went to normal. I commenced to back out of driveway- the engine rpm jumped, far more then what i was applying acceleration for and the transmission was hesitant ( clunking was audible). The vehicle reversed too rapidly and i applied quite a bit of brake to stop- i shifted to drive and again i could hear the transmission. The car hesitated to go forward ( transmission was clunking), jerking forward and slowing down and the engine rpm was erratic. I pulled to the side and placed car in neutral; waited a minute which during this time, the vehicle rpm went to normal. Ok, i placed gear in drive and vehicle responded normally. Have had several instances of some of the above described events happening since original occurrence. At this moment, steering column is not locked with the key removed and when turning car to start the ignition is just turning over. *tr

The vehicle was traveling at 70 mph with cruise control on, in heavy traffic. I tapped the brake pedal to release the cruise control and the vehicle lost all electrical power and stalled in the right hand lane of the interstate. Several commercial vehicles had to make a sudden stop to avoid a collision. The vehicle had to be pushed off the interstate. The local ford dealership performed a standard computer diagnostic test and informed us that the computer was unable to locate a reason for this complete loss of power. We contacted the ford customer service division and were advised to continue operating the vehicle until the problem recurred. In the event of another loss of power we were advised to have the vehicle towed to a dealership so the problem could be investigated. *tr

The incident date, vehicle mileage and vehicle speed are all guesses as i am not sure of that information. When i am driving the car, it will just stop working and slows down to a snails pace and the lights on the dashboard come on the way they would if you didn't turn your car on all the way. The short term solution each time has been to turn off the car and restart it but it is very scary as i am in the middle of the street where i shouldn't be stopped. This happens every month or so (examples include: after i stopped at a stop sign and i found myself in the middle of a street with a car that wouldn't drive; while i was about to turn left to go down a hill; when was driving out of a parking lot.) i have brought it to the dealership multiple times and they have tried several different things to fix the problem but i continue to have it. I have complained to ford but ford's position is that i can keep driving it. *tr

We have been complaining since 2016 to ted britt ford and to ford about the transmission and the jerking, popping, slipping, especially while turning, and they told us that they could not duplicate the problem. This is not the first time we complained. At one point the service tech told us that slipping, jerking, and popping from the transmission was normal for the taurus x. On 10/20/2017, we broke down on a very busy road. We were driving the car when all of a sudden the car started to buckle and choke. Then we had smoke billowing from the rear of the vehicle. We turned off the engine and turned on the flashers. We found out that the antifreeze reservoir was empty. Something is clearly wrong with this vehicle and ford does not want to correct it. We were forced to buy this car because we believe that ted britt sabotaged our 2003 ford windstar lx. Ted britt sabotaged our windstar through disconnecting the vacuum line that fed the heating and ac. We went for three years freezing in the winter and boiling hot in the summer. They did not want to reconnect that line for our heat and ac. They disassembled a lot of our windstar and threw everything in the back of our van onto the cloth seats. Dashboard, cowl, grill, hood was off the van, tires, brake lines, engine parts, and other parts were thrown onto our cloth back seats. They made our tan seats black with the road grime and grease. Then they decided to ask us if we wanted our van back. That was very rude. We had just cleaned those seats. Now we are having problems with the 2008 ford taurus x. We had to call the police and our auto insurance to help us out. We filed an insurance claim to get the vehicle towed and we had to take a taxi to work.

I was taking my son to physical therapy for a stroke he had. The car just shut off. I had to find a place pull over and coast to a stop. After sitting for a few minutes, i started the car and we went on without further incident. However, over the past year and a half, it has shut off on me in the middle of traffic several times. No one could find the answer until recently. We replaced a censor in the transmission and hope that fixes it. I could have been seriously hurt or killed on the occasions that the car shut off in traffic. We recently learned that ford knew about the problem. Our transmission date is september 2007, which is in the time frame ford says they knew the problem existed. I think ford should be made to pay for the parts and labor it caused us. *tr
