Every Forest River Salem carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Salem.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Salem VIN

- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.

The tempered glass covering the interior electric fireplace exploded randomly, sending shards of glass throughout the trailer. There was no warning, and we were simply sitting in the trailer enjoying the day. The fireplace was not turned on, and there was no power to the trailer. Battery was turned off, and the temperature inside the trailer was 70 degrees. There were no weak spots, dings, chips, or any other flaw in the glass.
The latch on the gate on the rear patio failed to remain secure, and the gate swung open multiple times driving down the freeway. We had to pull over and secure the latch manually.
The contact owns a 2024 Forest River Salem Towable. The contact stated that after purchasing the trailer, the contact noticed signs of water leaks and damaged gaskets on the window seals. The contact also stated that the slide-out panels were not operating properly. The contact had taken the RV back to the dealer where it was purchased. The contact was not sure if the dealer had replaced any of the window seals or gaskets. The slide-out panel was still not operating properly. The RV was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200.
The contact owns a 2023 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 35–65 MPH and towing a 2023 Forest River Salem Cruise Lite, the roof on the RV caved in. There was mold detected on the inner walls. The RV was swaying from left to right. The contact stated that the foundation had separated. The active air dam warning light was illuminated. The RV was towed to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that there was structural damage and that the ceiling panels needed to be replaced. The RV was repaired, and the dealer recommended sending the RV to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was unknown.
I am filing a safety complaint regarding a 2022 Forest River Salem Cruise Lite travel trailer, purchased July 21, 2022. At the time of sale, the unit had an open federal safety recall (NHTSA Recall 22V-243) involving a fire/explosion hazard. The recall was not remedied prior to sale. The vehicle was presented for service multiple times, and the recall was not identified or addressed until May 2025. At that time, the manufacturer directed that the recall repair be completed; however, the issue has not been resolved. The manufacturer’s owner portal continues to show the recall as open, despite NHTSA’s system not showing an unrepaired recall for this VIN. The vehicle has been out of service for an extended period and is currently unusable. Request: Investigation into failure to remedy a safety recall within a reasonable time, potential reporting discrepancies regarding recall status, and the sale of a vehicle with an open safety recall.

I have a 2022 Salem FSX170SS. While traveling on our first trip with this vehicle, the fresh water tank fell out of the trailer and dragged on the pavement. I was fortunately traveling through a construction area at low speed and damage was limited to the loss of the tank and underbelly. This same model had a safety recall in 2021 for the very same problem. The remedial action was for the dealer to verify and if necessary correct any installation defects e.g. poorly fitting tank. A cursory examination of the unit quickly revealed that the design is minimal and has near-zero redundancy in the event of a minor installation issue. The weakness presents a clear danger to human injury and death. The fact that I had this problem in 2022 would seem to make it clear that the company's response to this issue is woefully inadequate. I have reported this incident to Transport Canada and there is an open file. An inspector has been to my home to assess the trailer. Because I am not a US resident, I was unable to submit the form (it requires a US address). I therefore used the address of a friend. My actual address is 654 Glen Cedar Cr., Innisfil Ontario Canada L9S2J5.
The contact owns a 2021 Forest River Salem. The contact stated while stationary, the bolts attaching the front live-in slide to the body fractured, resulting in the slide detaching from the body. The trailer was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000. The consumer provided photos of the trailer.
Roof/wall seals prematurely failed. Travel trailer is a 2020. only 1 1/2 years old. Bought it brand new. Water damage can cause mold, creating health issues and structure issues. Currently at a repair facility being inspected for total damage and estimate on cost. Had it's last outing August 2020, no damage or signs of problem then, noticed bad seals and water damage 5 Jan 2022.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 forest river salem travel trailer. The contact stated that the travel trailer had not been hauled by a vehicle yet because one of the stabilizers associated with the two fuel tanks fractured. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that this was a known failure. The contact was waiting on a response from the manufacturer. The dealer was not contacted. There was no mileage. The vin was not available. *dt*jb *dt*jb

Fireplace within entertainment center/slide began to work only on low. Cleaned unit, had to pull access panel to access electrical outlet that fireplace was plugged into. Found a browned outlet face. Turned off circuit, pulled outlet and found a charred electrical line and back of outlet. This was probably moments from being a fire. Attempted to contact Forest River - Salem Cruise Lite division but never received any communication back.
The contact owns a 2024 Forest River Salem Towables. The contact stated that when the trailer was set up at an RV park, one of the leveler jacks failed to operate as intended. The contact stated that later, water had leaked from the shower and soaked the flooring in the trailer. Additionally, the contact stated that the electrical system had failed, and there was only electricity for half of the trailer. The contact stated that later, the awning separated from the side of the trailer. The contact stated that the RV was returned to the dealer where it was purchased. The dealer repaired the RV. However, the contact stated that the awning was improperly repaired, and that the electrical system and the plumbing system had damaged the trailer. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 300.
Only one day old, 3000 series Solera Lippert (serial number2021125707-RA ) awning material tore away from camper and support arms fell down. Awning was glued to light bar and did not have any other support. The power arms fell within range of hitting a person if they were there at the time. No one was injured in our case but very dangerous none the less.

The contact owns a 2022 Forest River Salem Laminated Towables Trailer equipped with a Furrion oven, Model Number: F1S17L03A-BL. The contact stated that the stove was leaking gas and failed to ignite as needed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the regulator control valve was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure.
The contact owns a 2022 Forest River Salem Towables. The contact stated that while she was in the RV, she saw smoke. The contact inspected the fuse box and noticed that the fuse box wiring had melted. The wall behind the fuse box was burned and the electrical cord connected to the outside of the RV had also melted; however, the fire alarm failed to alert of the danger. The RV was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that they were unable to duplicate the failure. The dealer sent photos of the failure to the manufacturer and was awaiting a response. The RV was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

The tongue jack provided by the manufacturer/original dealer on my unit broke within 24 hours of me bringing the unit home. At the time it broke I was already connected to the hitch but it was no longer able to lift up RV off my truck without using a separate jack. Problem was confirmed, inspected, and replaced by a separate electric tongue jack by a separate Camping World facility other than original Camping World dealer.
The contact owns a 2022 Forest River Salem Trailer equipped with a Tongue Jack. The contact stated as he was cranking on the tongue jack, the jack failed and dropped 9 inches, causing the front of the trailer to collapse as well. The contact stated that the name of the manufacturer of the tongue jack was not available. Additionally, the model name and serial number were also not available. The dealer and the manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The contact stated that he replaced the defective tongue jack with a new tongue jack that he purchased from the store. The tongue jack was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 2,000.
Electrical System 18 Read
Our Forest River Salem Hemisphere Travel Trailer posed a severe safety risk to my family due to improper construction. Specifically, an electrical outlet installed under the sink and near the water heater was not GFCI-compliant or waterproofed, violating NEC Table 310.15(B)(16) and NEC 551 standards, which are mandatory for RVs. While camping, we noticed a burning smell and then smoke coming from under the sink. Thankfully, I was awake and acted quickly to get my family out, cut the power, and extinguish the smoldering outlet—flames appeared just in time. Had I not been awake, this could have resulted in a catastrophic fire, endangering our lives. This complaint highlights a serious safety hazard involving Forest River's failure to install GFCI-compliant outlets near water sources in their Salem Hemisphere Travel Trailer, violating NEC 551. The improperly installed, non-waterproofed outlet under the sink caused smoke, smoldering, and nearly a fire while the complainant’s family was camping. This near-tragic incident underscores the fire risks and life-threatening consequences of such negligence, especially in confined RV spaces. Electrical fires are a leading cause of residential fire fatalities, and RVs are particularly vulnerable due to their construction and limited escape routes. The lack of GFCI protection in wet areas not only breaches safety standards but also exposes Forest River to liability, as similar lawsuits have been identified. The emotional toll on the family, including fear and loss of trust in the product, further emphasizes the seriousness of the issue. The company should urgently investigate, ensure code compliance, and recall affected units to protect customers and restore confidence. Proactive measures like improved quality control and transparent communication are essential to prevent future incidents and mitigate legal and reputational risks. I have reached out to Forest River multiple times and they refuse to respond to my inquiries.
The contact owns a 2020 Forest River Salem fifth wheel. The contact stated that the RV was not able to start up. Additionally, the converter caught fire while the contact's husband was inside the RV. The contact's husband put out the fire with a fire extinguisher. No injuries were sustained and no medical attention was received. The RV was towed to the dealer; however, the RV was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure.
We were sitting in our travel trailer when i smelled something burning, like an electrical burn. I went around our travel trailer and looked under the sink and saw the water heater smoking. I immediately turned off the electricity. It turns out, the ac junction box that attached to the water heater had caught fire due to the wire nut not being properly secured to the wire. Travel trailer was stationary.
Electrical device caught fire and caused significant damage to the rv. Heavy smoke and damage to electrical wiring
Tl*the contact owns a 2003 forest river salem. The contact smelled smoke in his fifth wheel trailer. He detected smoke and immediately went outside to disconnect the wires. The fire department was not called and the dealer was not notified. No other vehicle information was applicable.
The slide out mechanism is not strong enough to pull the slide out into the trailer itself for transport. This must be manually done, underneath the trailer, with a crescent wrench, even after extensive troubleshooting. The slide out does not operate independently, even when all cargo is removed.

I smelled gases coming from the RV and after days of troubleshooting I found that one of the batteries was boiling and putting out hazardous gases that were leaking in to the living space. Further troubleshooting revealed a boiling battery and the battery disconnect was incorrectly wired and would not disconnect the battery but provided constant power to the battery, this also caused constant charging causing catastrophic failure of the battery. This event caused dangerous health conditions due to Sulfuric acid gases leaking in to the vehicle and put the occupants at risk.

Tire size: 225/75/R15 We were getting on the highway, but didn't even make it off of the on ramp after having just visually inspecting and checking the tire pressure prior. On the way to where we were leaving we actually had another one of these castle rock tires blow out, so we were planning to stop and get four new tires as there was obviously even less milage on the castle rocks when the first blow out occurred, but didn't we make it that far. Both blow outs caused considerable damage to the unit and there was no apparent cause for them happening.

The contact owns a 2020 Forest River Salem trailer equipped with LionsHead Tires, Tire Line: Castle Rock, Tire Size: 235/80/R16, DOT Number: Jumr2mt4818. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the passenger’s side front and passenger’s side rear tire experienced blowouts and caused severe damaged to the trailer trims, plastic inner wheel well liner, and the wheel wells. The tires were replaced. The contact also stated that the blowouts happened on two separate dates, with the first date being September 13, 2021. The contact was able to replace the tires. The failure mileages were not available.
Driving down the road and tire exploded. Cruise was set on 70 miles an hour and no debris was hit. Camper was empty, 14,000lbs. We were 80 miles from the dealership who preformed a full inspection of camper and tires.

While pulling our new 5th wheel salem hemisphere camper we bought april 2020 on interstate near st.louis at 65 mph rear drivers side tire blow out damaging the camper had roadside assistance put spare tire on unit to get home trying to get camper fixed by factory who installed tires on the unit.*dt*jb

I purchased a 2019 forrest river salem cruise lite from camper world that came with castle rock st 205 75r14 tires on it. I have had all (4) tires explode going 60 mph. I have replaced all tires. These tire are extremely dangerous. I always carry a spare now i carry two. Camper has very low miles on it. Is there anything to be done to get these time bomb tires off the road?
While pulling our camper on i-10 in florida at 65 mph, our tire blew out causing us to be stranded.. It also damaged the rim and part of our camper. After putting the spare tire on, we noticed it looked warped and drove slowly to our camping location. After setting up for camp, we noticed the remaining tire looked strange too. We had to buy a new tire and rim to get home. Bottom line is, all three tires that came on our new camper were suspect. We bought this camper new and expected to be able to use it more than 3 times before needing to replace tires. The tires seem to be defective and they were on our forrest river salem camper. * On the way back home from the dealer in PA for a water-tank recall service, the right leaf spring on the trailer broke on the highway and caused the trailer on fire. The less than 3-years old trailer was totaled. Police and I took photos of the damaged trailer and spring. I also kept the broken spring for inspection. * It could be a FATAL incident. We were luckily stopped for gas otherwise the fire could be breaking out when we were driving on highway! * The spring was permanently broken and was confirmed by the police and towing/service center. * The trailer was inspected by police/fire department and Rossnagle's Service Center (police called). * There were NOT any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. We didn't feel any abnormal behavior of the trailer until we stopped for gas when we saw the smoke start to come out. I don't know how long the trailer body had been sit in the moving tire before the fire started.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 forrest river salem. The contact stated while driving 65 mph, another driver alerted her that the rear of the vehicle was on fire. The vehicle was maneuvered to the shoulder. The contact extinguished the fire, which was located on the rear axle. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop and the contact was informed that the rear axle melted due to a bearing failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 1,000.
Purchased this camper as brand new from camping world in November of 2025, after towing the camper home with my family in the vehicle, I proceeded to go through it about a week later to prepare it for winter. Upon going under the trailer I found two bolts that secure the leaf springs to the frame to be loose. One of them (front bolt of front driver side leaf spring ) was 3/4 of the way out, the other the nut was on by just 1 thread and the bolt was also backing out. This could have caused a serious accident or death as the vehicle could have rolled over or collided with another vehicle while turning. I proceeded to contact the dealership, they told me to contact Forrest river directly. I have submitted photos of issues and had back and forth correspondence and they have still not corrected the issue.. it has now been 3 months since I first reported this, and no one has corrected anything. Due to the severity of the issue I can not tow it to be serviced anywhere. I will be contacting my states attorney general as well to file a complaint.

The manufacturer was made aware, however, they had not received a response as of yet. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.
In february 2016 we purchased a 2016 salem forest camper. We only pull it less than 6 times a year (less than 161 miles each way). We were having flat tires (blow outs) on most trips causing damage underneath and damage on both sides. Prior to the blow out the camper pulls to one side making it difficult to control, you hear a pop and then less than a minute you have a tire that has peeled itself like an onion. It appears that the camper comes down onto the tires. This has happened every year we have pulled it. The last time was may 24, 2019.*dt *dt *dt consumer stated tires were purchased last year. Manufacturer was contacted. Camper is currently at gander outdoors of roanoke,va. *jb *dt *dt vehicle is being repaired.*jb coinsumer stated replacement tires fail as well. Libbert verbally said the springs were almost flat and the bolts are above the tires causing them to peel like an onion. Lippert of course didn't put anything in writing put authorized "in good faith" 2 new axle kits which include the springs. They are not covering insulation. Submitted to forest river regarding the bolt. There were obviously several issues making my camper unsafe to pull. *jb
I bought an rv 2015 for major rv in hesperia california forest river salem two weeks after i bought it the pain started pulling off the front then trailer brakes kept shorting in and out and then quit working altogether took it back to major rv told him about the paint and trailer brakes they told me they put a switch in that from wherever made the switch put a wire in the wrong place but they were contact in the factory to do the paint i told him suspension is hitting the bottom of the trailer capacity is 1300 and 50 pounds what's the track 400 pounds from freshwater all that's great nothing much in the trailer at all butt it took a whole year i sat around the corner from the forest river factory for 6 months in the trailer park waiting for them to call me to fix my trailer a few weeks before the warranty expired they asked me to bring the trailer and i have a newborn daughter which was no problem by that time we went through the whole pregnancy with not even an email back to us i took the trailer and they replace the suspension the freshwater tank all the drains in the trailer went through the electrical system i had to rent a room for a week $700 when i got there the trailer was not even ready they had put back on a destroyed tire when i had a brand new spare on the back which i replace on my way to colorado i noticed the tires started wobbling again the trailer was becoming very unstable and uncontrollable
The suspension and axles do not adequately support the chassis at the advertised curb weight of the trailer, causing the axles to warp and all 4 of the tires to fail. The attach points to the chassis also dislodged and require replacement.
**advised by [email protected] to forward to you for action** extensive mold damage - compromised structural/suspension integrity due to water leakage fine/recall levied against manufacturer forest river (july 2015) for failure to comply reporting safety issues. We own a forest river salem cruise lite, bought new aug 2015, faulty construction/leaks since purchase. Repair done/not resolved. Brought in again & currently walls ripped out & extensive mold found by dealership. Dealer advocated for full replacement (technician had to leave unit due to mold). Forest river towed it from fl to goshen, in facility (walls ripped out, 1000+ miles on highways in high wind/structural integrity compromised due to damage, not to mention exposed mold). Monitor assigned to nhtsa ruling please be advised vehicle currently at factory if they'd like to see damage firsthand. As well, please see bbb complaints of safety issues not being handled. We asked the rep to address safety, he replied 'well, you did buy our base model. That's what we use to keep our production line going during the slow season'. If this isn't an admission of guilt, not sure what is. In other words, if we bought a corolla (base model) vs a camry.. Would it 'serve us right' if it had serious safety flaws.. Would the nhtsa be ok with that comment? We are urging someone (or the monitor assigned to the nhtsa ruling made in july 2015) ... Please go to the factory asap. Please address these serious safety issues that continue. Your ruling may have 'shifted' forest rivers practices, but still are allowing them to produce seriously flawed, unsafe products. This is 2nd attempt to fix water intrusion (now w/mold). We want refund/replacement, not a 'band-aid' as was suggested & failed last time! Can't in good faith re-sell this unit with history of leaking / mold. Unsafe to remain in! Please help!

Traveling from newton to panama city fl, 5 miles across state line right rear tire blew apart. Split from one bead to the other. Tread layer cake off and damaged travel trailer. Tires were st225/75r15 castlerock 8ply trailer tires. Came on trailer from factory. Dot date code 4516. Just over 3yrs old. I have been in tire business for over 20yrs so i take know the importance of tire maintenance. This is clearly a tire defect and tire manufacturer should be held accountable. I found several complaints about this tire and others made by the same manufacturer online. Something needs to be done before someone gets hurt or worse. Max speeds that morning of travel were 50-55mph due to such a windy morning.
The unit has castle-rock 225/75/15 original tires installed on unit. August of 2019 was returning home from a trip in panama city beach fla, had a blowout in dothan ala. Did not think of a defective tire at the time and just considered it bad luck.i replace the blown tire with the new spare that came with the unit and had never touched the ground.same make and model and drove approximately 100 miles home.had the original spare mounted on the alloy wheel to match all other wheels and new spare mounted on the spare wheel. Did not use again until august 4,2020. Left for trip and drove approximately on hwy 231 in seale ala just another 100 miles and had another blow that severely damaged the rv skirting, under carriage, electrical wiring and wheel wells on both sides of the rv.i started research and found the castle rock tires are the root cause of the problem. I had all tires replace before heading back home and the tire dealer informed me all original tire on the rv were all separating and i would not have made it home without another blow out . *jb
Brand new travel trailer was sold by camping world with bias ply and radial tires mixed on the axles, water tank was left unbolted from frame and electrical under the trailer was fixed with wire nuts. This is all a serious safety defects, that could lead to major problems on the highways, pulling the trailer home it had major sway problems. I dont know if the forest river factory built it this way or camping world did it.
Per other complaints i also have vail sport st lh 99 tires on my 40 ft 10,0000 lb 5th wheel camper and the manufacture is replacing the one tire showing sidewall cracks as have all other complaints but refuses to replace the remaing 3 that have the same dot date code as the one they are replacing since they show no issues. Its a matter of distance and time before they fail and the manufacture is playing with my families safety. I'm am concerned as a consumer that since these tires all went on together the remaining 3 tires present a big safety issue to me.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 forest river hemisphere (na). While driving various speeds, the brakes failed to respond without warning. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 10,000.
The main frame of the trailer has failed doe to a gross error of the mechanical design in making the front crossmember too thin to support the weight of the trailer. Additionally, the requirement to use a load leveler by the dealer as recommended by the manufacturer increases this load to the point that the calculated safety margin of the crossmember that supports the tongue is 1:1. The crossmember material is standard a36 steel with a nominal thickness of .1 inches and is bent in the shape of a c channel, welded to the front of a 10 inch i-beam which comprises the majority of the load bearing structure of the main frame. The front crossmember in question is used as a support point for the underslung tongue that is welded to the lowermost point of the i beam and the front crossmember creating a fulcrum ratio of approximately 2.896 : 1. The lever being the tongue tubing itself that is then pushed upward into the front crossmember with a force of 2400 pounds as calculated using a measured tongue weight of 830 pounds with the vehicle completely unloaded of all cargo and wastewater and with empty propane cylinders. This force is supported by a tongue comprised of a 2x6 rectangular tubing with a nominal wall thickness of .098 inches that has deformed longitudinally and expanded laterally across the short axis directly under the front crossmemeber. The front crossmember has then receded into the underbelly of the camper and begun a vertical crack that has compromised the handling characteristics of both the tow vehicle and the trailer at speed. Additionally, the electrical braking system has failed due to other design flaws in the protection of wiring within the wheel and the design of the mechanical actuation that impinges on the wiring harnesses freedom of movement while being actuated. *tr
