How to read a Heartland Cyclone VIN — every digit explained

Every Heartland Cyclone carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

  • VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Cyclone.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

We were driving north on [XXX] from Albuquerque to Aztec, NM driving between 65 and 70 mph. There was no debris in the road and the tire on the passenger rear axle blew out. The tread separation tore up the side skirt and trim. I checked the tire pressure on the other 5 tires and all were inflated to the recommended PSI. 2015 Cyclone

Driving onto an onramp from highway 20 on to i-80 east in california ~ 50 miles west of reno, nv. Traveling ~ 40mph; dry road condition and the outside temp was about 50 degress; towing our 2015 heartland 5th wheel rv. Blowout accrued with towmaxx str 235/80/r16. Caused $3000.00 to the rv. Currently in touch with dynamic tire for resolution.

2014 Cyclone

Driving south into ga with our 2104 heartland cyclone 5th wheel ,i stopped at a rest area. As always, i do a walk about rv inspection. Looking at the rv tires i spotted a golf ball sized ballon in the sidewall of our 235/85r-16 ''tow max" tire located right at the edge of the rim. The tires have about 7,500 miles on them, excellent tread and inflated to 80psi as recommended by heartland rv. I put the spare on and proceeded to find a tire shop. We stayed at a camping world lot. About 2 hours into our stay we heard a very loud noise. The tire blew sitting with no pressure on it, mounted in the spare tire rack. Upon removal at a tire shop, it was noted that "they were properly installed" with no cuts. I replaced all the tires with new 14 ply trailer tires. I have heard of all the complaints of these tires and it is time for action. Please advise. *tr

2014 Cyclone

I bought a 2013 heartland cyclone in dec 2013 and i one year and less than 4000 miles have had 5 blown tires. One in oct. 2014 one in dec 2014 and 3 in feb 2015. Tires sent to dynamic tire and in march they sent me a letter saying it was my fault because tires were underinflated or unit was overweight. I air my tires before leaving every trip and monthly if unit is not moved. I scaled this trailer and am under gross and axle weight. I have the scale ticket that was from the same day that i blew 2 tires. Tires are tow maxx 235/80/16/load rane e. I have bought new tires but have yet to get the damage repaired. Tire company has the tires but i took pictures before sending them. *tr

2014 Cyclone

Towmax tire failure with only 600 miles. *tr

2014 Cyclone

A power king towmax tire had a blowout with only about 3000 miles on it on our 2014 heartland cyclone trailer. I was told by the manager at big o tires that these tires are junk and that they will all eventually have a blowout. He also said if we were lucky it wouldn't destroy our trailer or worst! Now i have read blogs on quite a few websites and it appears to be a potentially dangerous if not deadly problem with this particular brand of tires. There are a lot of concerned and angry consumers that have encountered the same problem as i have. I believe that these tires should not be allowed to be our national roadways just because we owe it china with all our debt to them. Please look into this company's background for yourself, you will agree there is a problem here. July of 2014 purchased new toyhauler trailer, heartland road warrior rw 348. Rv came with power king towmax lt235/80r16 e tires. With less than 2,500 miles, tire tread separated causing blowout. Tire caused $2,000 of damage to trailer. Blowout occurred on sept 18, 2014. Tires were well maintained and checked. Never driven over 62 miles an hour, and always on pavement. Never overloaded. Remaining tires will be replaced before next blowout, due to safety concerns and the numerous bad reviews. *tr

While towing a normally loaded 5th wheel rv at 65mph we experienced a tread separation and blow out of a towmax powerking 235 80 r16 tire. The tire blew and severely damaged the wiring and the rv.

Blowout on towmax power king st235/80r16. Pressure was checked before the trip started. Around 200 miles into the trip the tire blew out and damaged the trailer. I know of three of these same tires that blew out this week. All are on trailers that were purchased in 2014 including mine. *tr

2013 Cyclone

Right after purchasing this vehicle we took it up north in arizona camping. During this trip a tire shredded and the spare had to be put on. After getting back we took it to the dealer. After a heated conversation they replaced the tire. We then found out from the parts representative and several salespeople that the tires we had were not safe for this vehicle. We contacted the manufacturer to see if we could get an adjustment for better tires. They totally refused. Our vehicle is a 40 foot toy hauler. We found out that the tires the manufacturer is putting on these vehicles are barely enough to support this weight. This vehicle when loaded with personal item, food clothing etc and a 4 wheel drive recreational vehicle far too heavy for the manufacturers tires. We were very lucky that we did not fly off the highway in a mountainous area. Fortunately we made it home safe and sound. We had to replace all the tires at our own expense in order to have a safe vehicle on the road. We also found out that the double axle that we have is not sufficient. It has a tendency to sway when traveling. How can this manufacturer sell an unsafe vehicle like this? *tr

Three separate blowouts over two trips of my dynamic tire, towmax str 235/85 16 e 10ply tires. First incident was a solo tire separation leaving only sidewalls on the rear driver side wheel. Second and third tires were on the same trip one day apart. Tire number two was a slow leak detected by my tpms and changed without incident examination by the tire expert showed separation. The third tire was a blowout with loss of tread and damage to my side skirt, fender, marker lights and hoses. Because of previous experiences from the first trip i carry two spares. The next day at the rv camp i had all four of the tires replaced with g rated, during that process the last of the original tires showed a separation of the tread but luckily had not blown. Dot adbz gpb 4214. Dynamic tire has yet to make good on the repairs or sent labels to ship the tires for their inspection, it has been almost a year, despite me calling multiple times. Don't use these tires for your 5th wheel.

2015 Cyclone

On 8/11/2015 while taking my cyclone 4200 in for service i had a tire blow out. I have only had the rv for 10 months and it has spent most of that time in the shop for warranty work. When i first purchased the rv i tried to get the dealer to change them out as i notice some indentations on the side walls. The dealer stated that it was normal and from the molds however i didn't get a warm fuzzy about this answer. Now with about 2500 miles on the tire at the time of the incident i was traveling west bound on i10 and had just gotten on the interstate when the tire blew out. I was traveling at approximately 45-55 mph. I immediately slowed and pulled over. It was the front ds tire on the rv that blew and caused damage to the wheel well and side of my rv. The tires were power king towmax st235/80r16 dot 0714. I have an air compressor that i bought and keep in the rv so that i can monitor and properly maintain the tires. The tire pressure is checked everytime i hookup to my rv and it is maintained at 80psi. I contacted dynamic tire which handles these tires and they wanted me to send them all to them. I only sent the one that had blown for analysis. They came back denying paying for damages to my rv saying that the tire had signs of being ran under inflated from rim flange impression on the side and stress marks on the bead. The damage they are stating is from where i had to drive slowly 5 mph to the next exit in order to get to a safe area to change the tire out rather than trying to keep this 45' monster on the side of the busy interstate and change the tire (unsafe staying there). These tires need to be banned from being allowed on the road in the us!!!! I have photos from when i tried to get the dealer to change the tires, and from the tire that blew out prior to me moving to a safe area, and i have the report that they provided me from their eng, and the other tires.

On august 30 2013 while merging westbound onto interstate 40 from exit 196 in moriarty nm at 7:35 pm i saw (from my right side mirror) a huge piece of tread flying off the left side of the camper. Since i was only merging onto i40, my speed never exceeded 45 mph. When the tread flew out from the wheel, it jettisoned approximately 6 feet into the air. A tractor-trailer was in the left lane and made a hard left onto the road?s shoulder to avoid the flying tread. Had this been a car and the driver not noticed the tire coming apart, it could have hit the car?s side or windshield. After the roadside service changed the tire out by putting on the spare, we did an inspection on the remaining four oem tires still in service. We discovered one tire that was excessively oversized and rounded out, indicating it too was about to give way, (mounted on the right, rear axle). Luckily, the roadside service had a trailer tire (same tire type that i purchased at discount tire after the first tire failure) and a tire changer in his vehicle. I purchased it for $172.15, the roadside service took the second failed tire off the rim and replaced it with the new tire. The toy hauler has a18,000-pound gvw and at no time was the weight anywhere near this mark. I did not have a ?toy? Or small car in the garage area. Additionally, prior to pulling the toy hauler, i emptied both gray tanks, black tank, and keep only a few gallons of fresh water on-board. Heartland and tbc?s engineers should work together to see if these 10 ply tires are adequate for the toy hauler?s design. Shandong hengdeng rubber and plastic co. Ltd located in china manufactured the tires between march ? April 2011. The tire separated and a huge piece of tread jettisoned from under my toy hauler could have caused a grave bodily injury/death accident much less involving years of cost and litigation to all parties involved. *tr

On two separate occasions I have had the door on the RV melt and crack from the door resting against the heat vent placed behind the door. The latch is NOT PRACTICAL OR SUFFICIENT. Many people go in and out and the door gets open and closed a lot. There’s no real visible warning except hot written on the vent in the same color. We are educated people who are aware of what the plug is for. It only took minutes for this to happen. I can’t imagine if we were not there and the door was left open what would have happened. If we were inside sleeping we would have no way out either. This is a poor design . I’m certain there is some kind of hinge that would stop it from lying flush with the back or stoppers that would bounce it back. I would appreciate it if you could review this matter. This is a FIRE HAZARD. I have also called and emailed the Heartland Company as well.

Unit has multiple hoses and wires running thru holes in chassis with no grommet protection from chafing and shorting out electrical components which could cause a fire or make rv components inoperable. Also hydraulic lines and water lines are run the same way, causing leaks as the pipes chaff on the metal edges they are run thru. There are wires run between the frame and underbelly showing signs of wear. The gray and black holding tanks were bellied badly because they had straps that were improperly installed. The tanks straps were 3-4" below the bellied tank bottoms having no useful purpose. The plastic tanks could have split spilling waste and sewer chemicals on the road. We had trouble getting the gas smell out of the front tanks. There is hot air heater hose that is kinked ,blocking the heated air from effectively heating the garage area. *tr

On a recent trip to big bend texas we experienced 3 blowouts on our heartland toyhauler. We were in the middle of no where and did not have cell service. Fortunately we were traveling with close friends that had their 5th wheel. With no help in sight the men changed the tires themselves twice within 100 miles. We had to use our spare and our friends spare to make it to a town where we could get both blowouts replaced. Let me add that before we left town we had to replace a tire because of a blowout from another trip. So we're headed home with 2new tires and a recently replaced tire. Son of a gun if we didn't have another blowout on the next day. So now all 4 tow max p230 85r16 tires have been replaced. We checked the tire pressure each day and we're empty in the toy hauler area. All three blowouts occurred on a paved road with no pot holes or other obstacles in sight. Our speed never exceed 60. Needless to say our rv is still in the shop getting the damage repaired. We are now in the market for 4 new american made tires and will go to a larger 14ply tire. *tr

After a four-hour drive, I discovered that three more wheels had cracked. I contacted Les Schwab, and they came out to replace all the wheels and tires. While at camp, I inspected further and found that two of the frame trusses above the axle area were broken. The welds on these trusses were poor, with rust behind them. We had to repair the trusses at camp. After some research, I found this seems to be a common issue with Lippert frames. My wife was so concerned, she refused to ride in the truck while towing the trailer. Now that I was able to get it home without anyone getting injured I'll have to inspect the entire frame.

I was in the process of unhitching my trailer from my tow vehicle. The safety chains were still connected to my vehicle at this time. Once the hitch cleared the ball, the trailer rolled back slightly and the safety chains tore away from the trailer chassis. The safety chains as well as where they are bolted onto the chassis should have withstood what occured, given the fact the chains/mounting points are supposed to be strong enough to support not only the weight of my tongue(1300 lbs) as well as the force created if the trailer were to become unhitched while in transit.
