How to read a Heartland Elkridge VIN — every digit explained
Every Heartland Elkridge carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Heartland and the country it was built in (real Heartland codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Elkridge.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- —5SF
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Elkridge, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

Electrical System 2 Read
The auto leveling system caught fire. The RV was a total loss. The system was properly powered down at last use.
The contact owns a 2018 Heartland Elkridge. The contact stated that upon cleaning the RV, he discovered that a fuse was not installed on the RV propane gas detector. The contact was concerned that if there was a propane leak inside the RV, he would not be warned of the gas leak. The contact made multiple attempts to reach the manufacturer however, each time, the contact was placed on an extended hold. The RV was not yet repaired. The contact had not experienced a failure.
Wheels 2 Read
I have had two of the original towmax tire size 225/75r15 tires blowout on my new fifth wheel. In both cases i was going under 65 mph. A third replacement towmax tire was put on my vehicle and i drove home. The next day that tire was goat because of a crack in the sidewall. If i had driven on it for any distance, it too would have blown. Heartland replaced all three tires, but i don't trust any of them. Unfortunately the best i can do is get the dealership to replace the tires with a different brand for a 50% discount which is what i am doing. All three problem tires were less than a year old and had about 2000 miles on 2 of them and less than 100 miles on the third one with the crack. These tires are junk and unsafe. My recommendation is you avoid them at all costs. Thankfully this all happened while my fifth wheel was still under warranty so all the damage to my trailer was covered. In the case of the two blowouts i was driving on good straight highway under 65 mph in texas on cool (60s) sunny days. Thankfully i was able to handle the blowouts and get off to the side of the road without incident. The flat occurred at the facility where i keep my trailer. Thankfully it was only a 70 mile trip and i was able to avoid a blowout on that tire. I literally left the tire shop and drove to the storage facility.
Was traveling east bound i-10 13 miles east of desert center ca. Driving at 60 miles per hour my left front tire on the trailer had a catastrophic failure. I pulled to the side got out and upon inspection of other tires i found another tire with bubble on the side wall. Clearly showing separation just above the bead. After getting those two tires changed and trying to get home 100 miles down the rode the left rear tire had a catastrophic failure. These tires were brand new on the trailer when we bought them. They had less than 3000 miles. I always monitor tire pressures on my vehicles my trailers when stored i move the tires monthly so they don't flat spot i cover them to keep the sun off them. I check for abnormal wear and signs of cracking. There was none of this. I have been towing trailers for over 30 years. I have never had this kind of problem.
