How to read a Hino 268 VIN — every digit explained
Every Hino 268 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this 268.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your 268 VIN

Purchased 2013 hino 268 on 04/29/2021from a dealership on 4/30/2021 the truck broke down. Not even having the truck 24 hours i called the dealer ship and received a tex message after i called a mechanic that is was a recall on the truck. As i was on the freeway the truck lost power i was able to coast the truck off the freeway in reno ,nv i had my family with me at this point this could have caused all our life's. I have asked the dealer over 3 times to refund my money back and they insist on fixing the problem i also asked for a report on the truck because doing my own research i see the truck was in a bad accident i have everything in tex message from the sales person he refuse to give me the information on the truck and told me carfax information wasn't correct. I called the hino dealership to be told that a recall was on this truck dated 9/8/2020 and no repairs at which this time the dealership was aware of the recall this truck passed all the inspection some how. The tires on the truck where you check the tire level has been painted over so its no way we could check the oil pressure unless the paint is removed. This company has a history of this.
