Who makes Mahindra
Mahindra & Mahindra Limited is an Indian multinational automaker headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Founded in 1945 by brothers J.C. Mahindra and K.C. Mahindra (originally as Mahindra & Mohammed), the company began assembling Willys Jeep CJ vehicles under license in India in 1947 and grew into India's largest manufacturer of utility vehicles, tractors and farm equipment. The Mahindra Thar is a direct descendant of the original Willys Jeep CJ-2A and remains India's most popular off-road SUV. The XUV700 (2021), Scorpio-N (2022) and XUV300 anchor Mahindra's passenger SUV lineup, and the Bolero pickup remains India's best-selling commercial pickup. Mahindra Electric Automobiles produces the e2o, eVerito and the BE 6 / XEV 9e battery-electric SUVs launched in 2024 on the dedicated INGLO platform. Mahindra & Mahindra trades on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India. Mahindra exited the US market in 2010 after a failed attempt to import the Mahindra Roxor (which violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards as a road-legal vehicle) and the brand has not returned. Recall data for Mahindra Roxor off-road vehicles sold in the US is tracked through NHTSA.
Brothers J.C. and K.C. Mahindra founded Mahindra & Mohammed in October 1945 as a steel trading company; the firm became Mahindra & Mahindra after Pakistani co-founder Malik Ghulam Muhammad emigrated to Pakistan and the company's name was simplified in 1948. The 1947 Willys Jeep CJ-3A assembly contract launched Mahindra's automotive business. The Mahindra Group has since diversified into 11 industries including IT services, hospitality, financial services, real estate and aerospace.

Every Mahindra built since 1981 carries a unique 17-character VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). It encodes where and when the vehicle was made, its engine and body — here's what each part means:
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Mahindra and the country it was built in (real Mahindra codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled it.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- USA58D · 7GB · MCU · MCV
The remaining digits — engine (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the number is stamped, see our free VIN decoder.
Who owns Mahindra, and what you get
Mahindra belongs to Mahindra Group. Mahindra competes in the Indian passenger SUV, pickup and tractor segments against Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai-Kia and (for tractors) John Deere. The brand's positioning emphasizes rugged off-road capability and value-for-money, with the Thar competing directly with Suzuki Jimny and Jeep Wrangler in India. Mahindra's 2024-2030 EV plan targets a 25% electric vehicle share by 2030 across passenger SUVs.
