How to read a RAM 4500 VIN — every digit explained

Every RAM 4500 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

4–8 · VDSCM826

  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a RAM and the country it was built in (real RAM codes below).
  • VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this 4500.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Risk. Wheel separation can cause a vehicle crash.

Fix. Dealers will update the torque specification in the owner's manual and other published service documents. Dealers will also inspect the vehicle's wheel studs, replacing them if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 30, 2021. Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

Risk. If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

Fix. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. Risk. Exploitation of the software vulnerability may result in unauthorized remote modification and control of certain vehicle systems, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix. Chrysler will notify and mail affected owners a USB drive that includes a software update that eliminates the vulnerability, free of charge. Optionally, owners may download the update to their own USB drive from http://www.driveuconnect.com/software-update/ or take their vehicle to a Chrysler dealer for immediate installation. In an effort to mitigate the effects of this security vulnerability, Chrysler has had the wireless service provider close the open cellular connection to the vehicle that provided unauthorized access to the vehicle network. This measure may not have been implemented on all vehicles and does not address access by other means that will be remedied by the software update. The recall began on August 25, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R40.

In november 2014 i purchased a second ram 4500 and noticed that the brakes were not as good as my previous 4500 that i still have. I brought this to the attention of the selling dealer and they said nothing was wrong. I drove the truck and noticed that the brake pedal was getting lower and spongy and that the brakes would not stop the truck like they should. I took the truck back to another dealer on 3/11/15 with same complaint they said nothing was wrong. When i picked the truck up i noticed that the brakes were working correctly. I asked what they did and they said nothing. After about a week the brakes went back to not stopping the truck like it should and the pedal was spongy and low. I contacted the dealer again. They said nothing was wrong with the brakes. I then went to the dealer with both of my trucks a 2014 4500 and had them drive both trucks. They stated yes there is something wrong and they would contact chrysler. I then returned the truck to the dealer for further testing as chrysler needed the dealer to do. After testing the dealer stated that all tests checked out so chrysler says that there is nothing wrong. The dealer agrees there is something wrong. I have complained to chrysler . If these brakes are checking ok why do they not stop the truck as they should , this is a accident waiting to happen and this is a commercial truck. It needs to be fixed . *tr

The vehicle had yet to be towed and remained at the scene. Upon investigation, the contact discovered that his vehicle had been placed under nhtsa campaign number: 14v635000(engine and engine cooling, fuel system, diesel); however, the contact stated that he never received a notification about the recall. 2019 4500

At only 15000 miles and 6 months of life, my truck is leaking oil/fuel from the cp4 fuel pump. The oil/diesel is leaking on the engine block and other nearby hot components which i assume could be a fire hazard or a fuel system disaster failure. The system is leaking all the time while engine is working

2019 4500

Ist time, approx. 29,000 miles, with no warning, vehicle ran poorly, rough and died. Stranded on side of road for 4 hours until a tow truck came. Diagnosed as high pressure fuel pump failure. Second time, approx 39,000 miles, same issue of stalling, except this time i was stuck in the middle of the desert with 114 degree temp for 8 hrs. Before a tow. Same diagnosis, high pressure pump failure. Engine oil cooler pouring engine oil out!!

2014 4500

My oil pan it rusting out fast. Nothing on the whole truck is rusted at all, only minor surface rust. The oil pan is rusting very fast and the truck is now leaking oil. I brought the truck to goodbrothers dodge and they quoted me the repairs to be around 1200.00. I dropped the truck off and the next day they said the oil pan they ordered is dented and they need to order another. Then 4 days later they said they couldn't do the job and replace the oil pan. They said i need to find someone else to fix it. I bought the truck from them and now they can't fix, and it appears to me that this is a defective oil pan in the first place because it shouldn't be rusted like it is. Nothing on the whole truck is rusted like this.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 ram 4500. While the contact's employee was driving 30 mph, the check engine indicator illuminated and the vehicle began to decelerate. The vehicle did not shut off. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 93,881.

2014 4500

My 2014 ram 4500 started to make noise coming from the water pump of the 6.7l cummins motor. Happens to be that the fca released a recall of 500,000 rams with possible engine fire due to a failed water pump bearing. When i notified the dodge dealer they stated no knowledge on this and scheduled a service appointment over a week out. Before the appointment date the water pump seized and snapped the belt amongst other things like a belt tensioner under the hood and the truck had to be towed in. They will not cover the belt because there is a pto system on the truck even thou the failure was caused by the water pump failure. The water pump is covered under warranty but they are putting on the oe pump that has the recall on it. They are aware of the recall but state its to new. This opens all types of liability of fire hazards and so on. Someone help

Windshield wiper hoses come undone almost daily making the washer fluid not function. Have had dealer replace once already but then fix doesn't last long. Def system module malfunctions at 52000 miles causing truck to go into limp mode making it unable to go over 5 mph even though it is full of def fluid. Has been ongoing issue where the def sensor reads full then goes to empty out of nowhere causing this warning light and 5 mph max and even after adding several gallons of def sensor doesn't read full. I was driving my truck and when i came to a stop and tried to put it in reverse, I did not have reverse. After several attempts of moving the gear lever there was a loud clunk, then I had reverse. Then when I then put it into drive it would not move. The vehicle has 35,500 miles. Dealer believes its the K1 snap ring in the aisin transmission. It is still at the dealer and they believe it will takes months to get the parts. Dealer has the same issue when it was dropped off. No warning lamps or symptoms prior to attempting to put it in reverse. Vehicle just stopped moving.

The Aisin transmission lost 1-4 forward gears while towing a trailer. The vehicle would not go forward only would move in reverse. We were going through a weigh station at time of failure in Florida, while our home base is in Michigan. There are many failures with this part. It is the K-1 clutch pack fails then forward gears do not work. Dealerships and Stellantis are both fully aware of the problem and forced us to have the transmission rebuilt rather than replaced. Check engine light came on at time of failure.

The contact owned a 2024 Ram 4500. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the vehicle hit the expansion joints and wobbled. The contact stated that the vehicle then experienced the Death Wobble and unintendedly pulled to the left, causing the contact to lose control of the steering wheel while driving on a curvy road. Additionally, the brake pedal was depressed but traveled to the floorboard, and the vehicle failed to respond. The contact stated that as the vehicle was approaching the guard rail, he attempted to make a right turn to avoid the guard rail, but the vehicle continued to pull to the left, and the front driver's side axle housing that had detached hit a road barrier, causing the front end of the vehicle to hit the guard rail. The vehicle then crossed the entrance ramp, and the front driver's side of the vehicle crashed into the guard rail located on the left side of the ramp. The contact stated that the front driver's side axle housing separated from the vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. The ambulance transported the contact to the hospital, where the contact was informed he had sustained a secondary whiplash, back bruises, and left knee injury. The vehicle was towed and totaled by the insurance company. A police report was filed, but the contact did not have the police report information available. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and sent a field engineer, who diagnosed the vehicle. The manufacturer later informed the contact that based on the engineer's report, the failure was not due to a factory defect. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 11,105.

I purchased my 2015 ram 4500 new, within the first 3000 miles the front tires were showing uneven wear, by 50,000 miles the uneven wear was sever. I replaced front tires and had a front-end alignment performed. Within approx. 3000 miles again, the front tires were wearing unevenly. At approx. 117,000 the abs service light came on, i called the dealership and they said to come n next week and they would change a wheel sensor but the vehicle was safe to drive until then. The day after the abs light came on however, the hub bearings went out completely and caused a small fire. I had the hub bearing, brake caliber, brake pads and rotor changed as a result of the bearings failure. These have not changed the uneven wearing and has increased the occasionally sever wobble/shake that occurs at mid speeds when a rough spot in the road or a semi sharp curve is in the roadway.
