“King of the Road”
Scania AB is a Swedish manufacturer of heavy commercial trucks, buses and industrial engines, headquartered in Södertälje, Sweden, and a wholly owned subsidiary of TRATON SE (Volkswagen Group commercial-vehicle subsidiary). Founded in 1891 as Vagnfabriksaktiebolaget i Södertälje (Vabis), the company merged with Maskinfabriks-Aktiebolaget Scania (founded in 1900) in 1911 to form Scania-Vabis; the Vabis suffix was dropped in 1969.
Scania is one of three premium-positioned European heavy-truck manufacturers (alongside MAN and Volvo Trucks) and consistently ranks at or near the top of independent European truck-of-the-year and fuel-efficiency benchmarks. The G-Series, P-Series, R-Series, S-Series tractors and L-Series urban-distribution trucks anchor the modern lineup. The 2024 Scania 25 P BEV is the brand's first battery-electric Class 8 truck, and Scania has committed to phase out internal-combustion truck sales in many European markets by 2040.
Scania's parent TRATON Group trades on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange as 8TRA. Scania does not sell trucks in the US market — a reciprocal long-standing avoidance with North American manufacturers selling in Europe. Recall data for European-market Scania vehicles is tracked through European agencies. Historical Scania VIN data may be referenced through ForCar.org for any imports.

Scania heritage
Vabis was founded in Södertälje, Sweden, in 1891 to manufacture railway carriages and the country's first cars. Maskinfabriks-Aktiebolaget Scania was founded in Malmö in 1900 to build bicycles and was named after the Latin name for southern Sweden (Skåne). The 1911 merger formed Scania-Vabis, which produced cars (until 1929), trucks, buses and industrial engines. Saab merged with Scania in 1969 to form Saab-Scania AB; the truck and bus division was demerged from passenger cars in 1995 and listed independently. Volkswagen acquired Scania over the 2000s and 2010s, and the brand became part of TRATON in 2018.
Market position
Scania competes in the global premium heavy-truck and bus segments against MAN (TRATON sibling), Volvo Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Trucks, DAF and Iveco. The brand's positioning emphasizes fuel efficiency, total cost of ownership and engineering refinement at price points 5-15% above mainstream European rivals. Scania's modular system enables extensive configuration flexibility from a relatively small parts catalog, a competitive advantage over rivals.
