On December 24, 2023, my family and I were involved in a serious accident while driving our 2023 Porsche Taycan. I was making a left turn at approximately 10 mph when a 2009 Honda Fit, traveling in excess of 65 mph, crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the left side of my vehicle. The impact was concentrated on…
In September 2023 this Porsche Taycan 4S accelerated suddenly while going very slowly in reverse after displaying a red warning message on the dashboard "Electrical System Error." The brakes did not work and the car crashed into a house. No one was injured, but the car was declared a total loss. I see a recent safety…
On 3/26/23 my 2022 Porsche Taycan Turbo self-ignited in our garage and created a lithium fire literally incinerating itself and completely destroying 3 other cars, the garage and approximately 35% of our home. The resulting fire filled the home with smoke, soot and required us to leave the house immediately and we…

Drive mode for my 2022 Porsche Taycan 4S has been abruptly changing from Drive to either Neutral or Park on its own. Noticed within first week or so of ownership. Car went into park once and neutral twice while stopped at approximately 1300 and 1700 miles. I took the car to Porsche dealer and was told they would investigate. On 3 separate occasions while at a stop light the car shifted itself into neutral from drive. It’s very unsettling and unsafe. This is a brand new 2022 Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo
Over the past 5 months, approx 6-7 episodes of car putting itself into park or neutral or 'hold' while stopped at traffic light. No loss of power while accelerator engaged
Engine control error - Park vehicle in a safe space. This error occurred after pressing the accelerator pedal upon switching from Normal to Sport Plus drive mode. Forward Collision Avoidance 10 Read
It was stop and go traffic. I was distracted and the car failed to auto stop and I hit the car in front of me. The alert did come on after the collision. I would assume the automatic braking failed or the collision would not have occurred. It was a low speed impact so not a major safety risk but even a minor collision…
My car indicated that there was a collision imminent when there was nothing in front of me and no car within any reasonable distance ahead of me either. The car tried to apply the brakes momentarily and then stopped. This happened on the I280 Northbound Lawrence Expressway exit headed towards the stop light at the…
On two separate occasions under similar conditions, the vehicle initiated emergency braking due to a false collision warning. Both cases occurred at the same location. When the car was in Drive (D) mode but stationary at a red light, it abruptly went in to park (P) without any user intervention. Had to reengage the drive mode to move forward. Problem has occurred at least twice before (months apart) without any reproducibility. I did bring it to the dealer once but they did not find…
My Porsche Taycan unexpectedly applies the brakes on its own while traveling at highway speeds and flashes a red warning message instructing me to take control of the steering wheel, even though both of my hands are already on the wheel. This is extremely dangerous because sudden braking at high speeds creates a major…

Cabin heater in the car failed during very cold temperatures. Making the windows fog up considerably. Taycan years to avoid — and the clean ones
Complaints per model year. More reports usually means more cars on the road as well as more trouble, so read the crash and fire columns alongside the count.
| Model year | Complaints | Top system | Crashes | Fires |

| 2024 | Electrical System | — | — | |
| 2023 | Electrical System | 3 | — | |

The same model year, different builds
Every complaint carries the first 11 characters of the VIN — plant, year, body and engine. That is a production series, and complaints are spread across them very unevenly.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Distinct production series | 117 |
| Average complaints per series | 2.3 |
| Worst single series | 12 complaints |
| Average age at failure | 1.7 years |
A model average of 2.3 hides a worst series at 12. Enter a VIN above to see the numbers for that exact build instead of the model as a whole.

How we count
Every figure here comes from complaints owners filed with NHTSA — 1,100,006 of them, covering 1,982 models built between 1981 and 2026.
A complaint is an unverified report: someone wrote down what happened to their car. It is not a confirmed defect and not a recall. What makes the volume useful is the pattern — when thousands of owners of the same build describe the same failure, that is a signal no marketing brochure will give you.
Two things we do that the source does not. First, we compute the age of the car at the moment of failure from the incident date and the model year. Second, we group complaints by the first 11 characters of the VIN — the production series — so a bad plant run does not disappear into a model-wide average.
Frequently asked questions
What are the worst years for the Taycan?
By complaint volume, 2020, 2022, 2021 drew the most owner reports. Bear in mind that popular years put more cars on the road, so check the crash and fire columns too.
Which Taycan years are the cleanest?
2024, 2023, 2021 have the fewest complaints on file. For recent years that can simply mean the cars are young.
How many complaints does the Porsche Taycan have?
265 owner complaints filed with NHTSA, covering 2020–2024. Of those, 10 describe a crash and 5 a fire.
Are these complaints verified?
No. They are unverified reports from owners. NHTSA publishes them as filed and investigates only a fraction. The value is in the pattern, not in any single report.
Can I check complaints for one specific car?
Yes — enter its VIN above. We match the first 11 characters, which identify the plant, year, body and engine, so you get complaints on that exact production series rather than the whole model.
