Vehicle Speed Control 1 Read
What's wrong. The cruise control and throttle cables are attached to the same throttle valve actuating lever at the throttle housing. It is possible that the plastic bushing on either cable could break due to environmental influences coupled with vibration. If the bushing breaks, the outer cable housing can separate from the bushing. In this case, during application of the throttle pedal without cruise control being engaged, the outer tube could catch on the edge of the broken bushing
Risk. This could cause the throttle valve to remain partially open. It his were to occur, the car might not decelerate as expected increasing the risk of a vehicle crash
Fix. Dealers will install a spring steel clip on the outer tube of each cable in the area of the adjusting screw and plastic bushing. The clip is designed to prevent the outer tube from dislodging from the bushing

What's wrong. The remote activation device can close windows and sunroof from a distance greater than the maximum (6 meters) permitted by fmvss no.118, "power operated window systems."
Risk. Consequence of non-compliance: this could allow windows or sunroofs to be closed on an arm or neck of an individual when the remote device operator is not within the immediate vicinity
Fix. Replace the inside rear view mirror which has the activation receiver with one whose receiver will control the door locking and theft alarm, but will not permit remote operation of the windows and sunroof
How long a defect stays unadmitted
Campaign numbers encode the year of the announcement, so each recall on this model can be dated against the car it applies to.

Which 840Ci years were recalled most
Campaigns per model year. A year with more campaigns is not automatically worse — it may simply have sold in far greater numbers.
| Model year | Campaigns | Most recalled system |

Frequently asked questions
How many recalls does the BMW 840Ci have?
2 NHTSA campaigns on record, covering 1994–1996. Not every campaign applies to every car — coverage is by production range, so check your VIN.
Is recall work free?
Yes. Safety recall repairs are free at any franchised dealer regardless of the car's age, mileage or how many owners it has had. That is a federal requirement, not a courtesy.
How do I know if my 840Ci still has an open recall?
Enter its VIN above. We show campaigns that apply to that exact vehicle and whether the repair has already been recorded as done.
Why did a defect take years to be recalled?
On this model the average gap between the car being built and the defect being admitted is 1.5 years, and the slowest campaign came 3 years later. Defects usually surface as they accumulate in the field: complaints pile up, an investigation opens, and only then is a campaign issued.
