A brake line is a thin steel tube carrying fluid at high pressure from the master cylinder to each wheel. It runs under the car, unprotected, through salt spray and road grit for the whole of the vehicle's life.

When it corrodes through, the pedal goes to the floor.

Chevrolet and GMC together account for 58% of every brake line complaint on file. No plausible reading of market share produces that number.

Why two brands dominate

Chevrolet and GMC are the same vehicles with different badges, so the two rows are really one. What they share is a set of full-size truck and SUV platforms sold in enormous volume through the 1999-2013 period, in exactly the states that salt their roads hardest.

The specifics that matter are routing and protection. Lines that run along a chassis rail in a position that traps salt slurry corrode faster than lines routed higher and shielded. Coatings differ between manufacturers and eras, and a line that spends winters packed in salt-laden mud is in a chemistry experiment.

Toyota and Subaru appear at much lower volumes with older average ages — 11.0 and 11.8 years — which is the shape you would expect from ordinary ageing rather than a platform issue.

What failure feels like

Every modern car has a dual-circuit braking system, split diagonally or front-to-rear, so one line rupturing leaves you with the other circuit.

That is genuinely a safety feature and it does not feel like one. The pedal goes down much further before anything happens, the effort required changes completely, and stopping distance roughly doubles. On a diagonal split the car may pull to one side as it stops.

The failure gives no warning because a corroded line holds until it does not. There is no soft pedal phase, no fluid warning light until the reservoir drops far enough, no noise. The first indication is the pedal travelling to the floor.

The inspection nobody does

Brake lines are visible from underneath and take five minutes to check. Almost nobody checks them, because a brake inspection means pads and discs to most workshops.

Follow the line from the master cylinder to each corner and look for two things. Surface rust is normal and means nothing on any car from a salted state. What matters is flaking — corrosion coming away in layers, leaving pitted metal behind — and any damp patch or dried staining along the run, which is fluid that has already found a way out.

If one section has gone, the rest of the run is the same age in the same conditions. Replacing a single section on a fifteen-year-old truck buys months, not years.

Buying in a salt state

Geography decides this failure more than mileage does. A low-mileage northern car can have worse lines than a high-mileage southern one, because corrosion is a function of time and chemistry rather than distance.

Which makes where a vehicle has lived a genuine part of its mechanical condition rather than a curiosity. A free VIN check shows the states a car has been registered in, and on a car from the salt belt the underside deserves a proper look before anything else.
