The four-to-eight step is the expensive one
$2,742 against $4,515 — a difference of $1,773 a year, or $8,865 across five years of ownership.
That's not a rounding error on a car's running costs. It's a meaningful fraction of what a mid-market used car costs to buy in the first place, spent again on fuel over a normal ownership period.
The increments are fairly regular: roughly $900 per pair of cylinders from four upward. Four to six adds $868, six to eight adds $905.
Diminishing returns at the bottom
Three cylinders return 33.0 mpg against four cylinders at 24.9 — the biggest single jump on the table, worth $651 a year.
But three-cylinder engines are rare, with only 449 rated configurations against 19,342 four-cylinder ones. They're confined to small cars and a few hybrids, so the saving is only available if the car itself suits you.
Cylinder count is a proxy, not a cause
An eight-cylinder engine doesn't burn fuel because it has eight cylinders — it burns fuel because it's large, fitted to a heavy vehicle, and tuned for output. The count is a shorthand for all of that.
Which is why modern turbocharged four-cylinders complicate the picture. A 2.0-litre turbo four in a heavy crossover can consume more than an older naturally aspirated six, particularly if it requires premium fuel. The count tells you less than it used to, and the direction of travel has been steadily downward — we tracked that in the average engine lost a cylinder and the V8 is now outnumbered four to one.
Using this when buying
Price the fuel over your ownership period, not per tank. A V8 truck at $2,000 less than a V6 equivalent costs you the difference back in eighteen months.
Check the fuel grade separately. Twelve-cylinder and most eight-cylinder performance engines require premium, which adds to the figures above rather than being included in them.
The engine in the listing may not be the engine in the car. Most models offer several, and sellers list the wrong one routinely — a third of recent model years carry more than one EPA rating, as we found in two 2025 Civics can differ by 18 mpg.
Confirm it from the VIN. Positions four through eight encode the engine the vehicle was built with. A VIN check reads it directly, which is the only way to know what you're actually buying fuel for.
