Six times the premium on cars people enjoy driving
By model, the manual premium reaches +52.3% on the Mustang, +49.3% on the Challenger, +40.3% on the Impreza, +37.3% on the Camaro and +34.6% on the Corvette.
These are cars bought for the experience of driving them, and the third pedal is part of the experience. Supply is also tiny, because most buyers took the automatic when new.
On ordinary cars it's a discount
Honda Fit: manual sells 10.5% below the automatic. Subaru Forester −7.4%, Mini Countryman −5.9%, Jeep Wrangler −2.2%.
The logic reverses because the buyer changes. Someone shopping for a cheap commuter or a family crossover mostly can't drive a manual, doesn't want to in traffic, and won't be able to resell it easily. A manual there narrows the buyer pool rather than widening it.
The market is nearly gone either way
Manual share ran at 32.8% on 1995 model years. On 2023 models it's 1.5%.
That collapse cuts both ways: scarcity supports prices on enthusiast cars, and on ordinary cars it means almost no buyers exist for what you're selling.
And the practical argument disappeared some time ago — at matched engine size automatics are now more economical, by 5.5 mpg at 1.8 litres.
What to do with it
Buying an enthusiast car: expect to pay, or take the automatic. A third more money for a Mustang manual is the market rate, not a seller pushing his luck.
Buying an ordinary car: the manual is a genuine bargain. Same vehicle, 5–10% cheaper, and the mechanical simplicity is a real advantage — a clutch replacement costs far less than rebuilding an eight-speed automatic.
Selling an ordinary manual: price it realistically. The premium you've read about doesn't apply to your Forester.
Confirm what's fitted. Transmission is missing from 30% of listings and manuals are rare enough that sellers sometimes misdescribe them. A VIN check decodes the gearbox the car was built with.
