The rating system has a blind spot

An F-450 weighs as much as five and a half Micras, and both are legal in the same lane at the same speed.

NHTSA is explicit about this: star ratings compare vehicles only against others of similar weight. A five-star small car and a five-star heavy truck did not take the same test in any meaningful sense, and the ratings were never designed to be compared across that gap.

That's not a flaw in the testing — it's the only way to make the test useful. But it means the single most important variable in a two-vehicle collision is the one the rating deliberately holds constant.

What mass ratio actually does

In a collision between two vehicles, both experience the same force but different changes in velocity. The lighter vehicle's occupants absorb proportionally more of the energy change, and the effect scales with the ratio rather than the difference.

At a 2:1 ratio the disadvantage is significant. At 5:1 it is not something crumple zones can equalise, because the lighter car's structure has to do far more work in the same fraction of a second.

This is why a small car with an excellent crash rating and a large SUV with a mediocre one are not equivalent when they meet each other, despite what the stars suggest.

The gap is widening

Electric vehicles are adding mass at the top end — the BrightDrop at 3,475 kg is a van whose weight is largely battery, and electrified versions of ordinary cars typically carry 200–400 kg more than their petrol equivalents.

Meanwhile the lightest vehicles in the table are all from an earlier era. Nothing being built now approaches 693 kg, because crash structure, airbags and equipment set a floor that didn't exist when the Micra and Festiva were designed.

So the spread isn't converging. The heavy end keeps rising and the light end has been discontinued.

What to do with this as a buyer

Read stars within a weight class. Comparing a compact's rating to an SUV's tells you which performed better against its own peers, not which you'd rather be in when they collide.

Weight isn't free. Heavier vehicles use more fuel, wear brakes and tyres faster, and cost more in liability premiums because they cause more damage. The safety advantage in a collision is real and so are the running costs.

Crash avoidance closes more of the gap than mass does. Automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and lane keeping prevent the collision, which beats surviving it regardless of what you're driving. None of these appear in the star rating.

Check that the safety equipment works. A vehicle with an unrepaired airbag or braking recall doesn't perform to its rating at all, and those campaigns stay free to fix at any age.
