The mental image is a workshop that did not torque the nuts. That is the version everybody assumes, and the complaint text does not support it.

Suspension components are blamed roughly four times more often than the fasteners. The wheel does not come off the hub — the hub comes off the car, with the wheel still bolted to it.

The failure that produces this

A ball joint is the pivot connecting the steering knuckle to the control arm. It carries the vehicle's weight, allows the wheel to steer and to move vertically, and it is a ball in a socket with a rubber boot keeping grit out.

When the boot splits, grit gets in and the joint wears. The wear accelerates, the ball develops play in the socket, and eventually it pulls out.

At that moment the wheel is no longer located by anything. It folds under the arch or leaves entirely, taking the knuckle, hub and brake assembly with it. That is why the reports describe a wheel departing rather than a wheel loosening.

The crash rate is unusually high

436 of these events ended in a collision — 12.2%. For comparison, brake complaints run at 7.4% and suspension complaints generally at 3.4%.

The reason is that the car does not merely stop steering. A corner drops onto the road surface, the vehicle pulls violently toward that side, and the driver has no useful input available. It happens at whatever speed the car was already doing.

The average vehicle age is 5.7 years, which is worth sitting with. This is not exclusively a problem of twenty-year-old cars — it is a problem of components that wear on a schedule nobody tracks.

It gives weeks of warning

This is the part that makes the numbers frustrating rather than simply alarming. Almost every failure mode in that table announces itself well in advance.

A worn ball joint clunks. Over a speed bump, over a pothole, turning into a driveway at walking pace — a distinct knock from one corner. It starts occasional and becomes constant.

A failing bearing hums, and the hum changes pitch or volume when you steer, because loading the bearing changes how it complains.

Both sounds are easy to ignore in a car that otherwise drives normally, which is exactly what happens. The car feels fine, so the noise gets attributed to the road surface.

Two checks that cost nothing

With the car raised, take the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it. Any perceptible movement means a worn ball joint or bearing. Repeat at 3 and 9 o'clock — play there points at the steering rack or track rod ends instead.

On a test drive, radio off, windows down, roll slowly over a rough surface and listen to each corner. Then a full-lock turn in both directions at walking pace. Between them these two checks catch most of what is in that table, and they take three minutes.
