A Mirage Injures Its Driver 6x More Often Than an F-450

Crash ratings tell you how a car protects its own occupants in a standardised test. Insurance claim data tells you what actually happens on the road, to everybody involved — and those are two very different questions.

Crash test ratings answer a controlled question: driven into a fixed barrier at a fixed speed, how well does this vehicle protect the people inside it? Every car meets the same wall, so the comparison is clean.

Insurance claims answer a messier one. What actually happened, to whom, and what did it cost? We have 11,608 vehicle records carrying those indexes, where 100 is the average across all vehicles.

Four of them matter here. PIP and medical payments cover injuries to the people in the insured car. BI covers injuries the insured car caused to somebody else. PD covers damage it did to somebody else's property.

Read the last column, not the first

The gap between what a class inflicts and what it suffers is the whole story, and it has a sign.

Pickups sit at +48. Their occupants are injured well below average and the other party is harmed well above it. Four-door cars sit at -26, exactly inverted: the people inside get hurt, the other party's property gets off comparatively lightly.

This is not about driver behaviour or road type. It is momentum. In a collision between two vehicles the heavier one changes velocity less, and injury tracks deceleration. The truck's advantage is not that it is built better — it is that it is heavier than what it hit.

The individual models are more extreme than the classes

Class averages compress the range. The models at each end are further apart than any table of categories suggests.

The Mirage records injury claims at three times the average rate. The F-450 records them at under half. That is a factor of nearly seven between two vehicles legally sharing the same roads.

And notice the Mirage's other columns. Its bodily injury index is 230 — it is not only a dangerous car to sit in, it is associated with above-average harm to others too. Light cars lose both exchanges.

Within a class, size does the work

If mass is the mechanism, then holding the class constant and varying only the size should move the injury number and leave the repair number alone. It does.

Injuries fall by 37% from the smallest SUVs to the largest. Repair costs move by five points and no consistent direction. Size decides who gets hurt; class decides what the repair bill looks like. They are separate mechanisms wearing the same premium.

What this does not mean

It does not mean small cars are badly engineered. A modern Mirage would have been an exceptionally safe car in 1995 — crash structures have improved across the whole market, and the crash test scores show it.

What the claims capture is relative mass in a fleet that got heavier. A small car scoring five stars against a barrier is still a small car when a three-ton truck arrives at the intersection, and the barrier test does not model that encounter.

Nor is it an argument that everybody should buy the largest vehicle available. Every pickup in that table is above average for harming somebody else. Choosing mass for your own protection is choosing to move risk onto other road users, and that is worth naming plainly rather than leaving it in a column labelled PD.

What to do with it

If you are weighing two cars that both scored five stars, the ratings have told you what they can. Injury claim data is the tiebreaker they cannot provide, and it favours the heavier vehicle for its own occupants every time.

If you are buying a small car anyway — for cost, for fuel, for parking — the useful move is to weight the features that help you avoid the collision entirely: automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, good headlights. Those work regardless of mass.

Either way, safety equipment only counts if it is present and working on the specific vehicle. A free VIN check shows the open recalls on that car, and airbag and braking recalls are among the most common there are.

Which cars have the highest injury claim rates?

Small four-door cars, by a wide margin. The Mitsubishi Mirage G4 records a personal injury index of 308 against an average of 100, with the Suzuki Reno at 201, Kia Spectra at 190 and Hyundai Accent at 177. Four-door cars as a class sit at 125 while pickups sit at 68.

Are big vehicles safer in a crash?

For the people inside them, consistently yes. Within SUVs the injury index falls from 107 for small ones to 67 for very large ones, and within pickups from 79 to 51. Mass is the variable — in a two-vehicle collision the heavier one decelerates less, and deceleration is what injures people.

Do pickups cause more damage to other people?

The claims say so. Pickups record a property damage index of 116 and a bodily injury index of 97 — both measure harm to the other party — against a personal injury index of 68 for their own occupants. That 48-point gap between what they suffer and what they inflict is the largest of any class.

Does a five-star crash rating mean fewer injuries?

Not directly, because the test and the claim measure different things. A crash rating compares a vehicle against a fixed barrier at a fixed speed, so every car is judged against the same wall. Real collisions happen between vehicles of different masses, and that is where the small five-star car and the large five-star truck stop being equivalent.
